BIOGRAPHY:
Uma was born to an impoverished Twi'lek clan that resided deep in the mountains of Ryloth. Her entire family was enslaved by a richer, more influential clan who prospered on selling less-fortunate Twi'leks to offworld slavers for a profit. Her family was just one of several who promised to provide slaves for sale in return for receiving a portion of the profits from each trade, ensuring they would have food to eat and resources to power their homes. As a result, children were constantly being born and sold in order to keep making money. Although this way of life was initially terrifying to Uma, she eventually accepted that it was the way of the galaxy, and that she would one day have to be separated from her family and sold in order to help them survive. The very old, the very sick, and the very young were left out of the trade, as well as a few select mothers, but Uma was not spared.

She received very little formal education in order to focus on her trade - servitude. As she grew older she was taught how to behave obediently and give up her own desires for the greater good of the clan. It was decided she would be a dancer and musician, because of the clear passion she showed for dance and harp-playing. While some of her brothers and sisters were trained to become translators and diplomats and learned several languages, she was taught only a moderate level of Basic. She was equally neglected in the education of other cultures, so much of her understanding can only be drawn from Ryloth's culture and language. Even so, she did not despair in her lot, but instead celebrated that her siblings would go on to see the galaxy and become dignified members of society.

Uma was taken by other Twi'leks to travel around Ryloth and nearby Tatooine, visiting palaces and witnessing the kind of lifestyle she would live when she was older. She purposely subdued her own personality and desires, being told that expressing oneself as a slave too much could lead to a painful death. Even so, she did develop a slight stubborn streak in her personality, which will most often present itself when she is put into uncomfortable situations or in fear. It is hard to break her spirit, because she finds joy in simple things, as one with a simple mind will often do. Praise for her dancing and harp music will greatly improve her mood, yet she does not solely rely on external approval to find meaning in life. Somehow, the young Twi'lek taught herself to seek approval from within, and doing so has greatly improved the quality of her life and allowed her to keep a somewhat positive outlook on life.

When she became an adult she was given her dancing outfit and sold in her first auction. The buyer was a person of elite status from Coruscant looking for a handful of servants for his estate. Uma's duties were limited to housework, which she found dull because she was never asked to dance or play the harp. However, life on Coruscant was quite comfortable and stunning for the Twi'lek, because she had never experienced a world outside of Ryloth. During that time she picked up on more of a vocabulary and learned a bit more about the galaxy from what she picked up in brief conversations, being educated by the fellow slaves. However, their master went bankrupt in a few years, and he was forced to sell his servants to various slavers, splitting them up.

Uma was passed off to an Iktotchi slaver. In the final days of preparation to auction her off, Uma asked a favor of the man. She would do her best to attract the notice of a well-paying master, if the Iktotchi promised to send a third of the profit to her family back on Ryloth. The Iktotchi agreed to the deal, and Uma smiled to herself, knowing she would help her loved ones, even at the cost of her life.
