In My Time of Need

Ada Rinn crossed the length of the drawing room, her slender hands nervous and wringing. Every so often, her hazel eyes flickered towards the clock as she paced back and forth. The young woman was full of nervous energy today, and she had been this way for several days now. Everywhere she turned there seemed to be whispering voices, eyes that avoided her gaze, and genial countenances that were used to mask darker intentions. The Hapans had a certain reputation for paranoia, it was true.

But the young Turila knew that she was in danger.

There was a deep seated feeling that told her, it was something more than simple intuition. Of course, there had always been tension and turbulence within the noble families of Hapes. There were stories of nobles perishing at the hands of their own relatives; even now this sort of thing was not unheard of. Ada had never feared for her own life, not until her recent engagement. With her hand now promised to a Hapan Dukat, she stood to gain a new title and a larger circle of influence. The stakes had risen.

Ada knew that she was generally well-liked among her peers; there were few that would truly wish her harm. This time, it had become clear to her that the most dangerous people were the ones closest to home. It was a highly troubling thought, one that had been keeping her awake at night. Her normally pleasant disposition had suffered, and so had her appearance. However, today she had scheduled a very important meeting, so she had made an extra effort to perfect her complexion. Her dark tresses were styled in gentle waves, and she wore a simple maxi dress that brushed the top of her feet.

“Lady [member="Tyra Gozen"] should be arriving soon, please go out to meet her.” She said to the family’s butler, “And please set out a tea service in the dining room, I will meet her there.”

“Very good, my lady.” He said with a stiff nod.

Ada’s reason for meeting with the noblewoman from Onderon was twofold. Indeed, this was a social call, but the true reason was to inquire about the woman’s business with mercenaries. As she understood it, Lady Gozen even had her own business. It was a good opportunity that she could not pass, and she had been relieved when her invitation had been accepted.

It wouldn’t be long now…
