SPECIAL FEATURES

[*]Navigation:

[*]Defenses:

[*]
Sensors:

Strengths:
  • Great long-range firepower
  • Great point-defense
  • Ability to generate interdiction fields at long ranges (standard long-range turbolaser range)
  • Sensor ability
  • Ability to detect cloaked ships using a crystal gravfield trap
  • The pilot can eject in combat
  • Ability to fly in Otherspace on its own accord (i.e. does not need to wait for a hyperdrive malfunction to go to Otherspace)
  • Can fly long distances with few jumps (hyperspace or Otherspace)
Weaknesses:
  • Slow, unwieldy (even more so when the gravity field generators are active)
  • Awkward firing arcs due to the gravity field generators
  • Once gravity field projectors are activated, it starts attracting debris from explosions on or of nearby ships, potentially causing damage
  • Exposed gravity field generators: for this reason it is a priority target, especially since destroying gravity field generators can potentially gut the ship
  • Exposed ventral hangar
  • Once the armor takes a hit at a place, another hit at that same place can likely penetrate the hull
  • If one attempts to jump an Immobilizer 421 in hyperspace while its gravity field projectors are damaged, it can unwittingly find itself in Otherspace
  • Fragile frame: the requirements of placing four gravity well projectors as well as a large hangar capacity place heavy constraints on the ship's frame that have the effect of limiting the amount of damage it can take
  • Otherspace flight can be hazardous due to the potential for Otherspace mass shadows not lining up with hyperspace and realspace mass shadows
Description: Built from the Madeen-class, the Immobilizer 421 is the largest ship of the Immobilizer series of interdictor carriers. and is also borne from the recent rise in the use of microjumps, where the numerous microjumps gave trouble to various parties. Due to the constraints of space aboard the ship, thanks to the usage of four gravity well projectors that allow it to project gravity wells at long-range turbolaser ranges, the decision was made to eschew large-caliber projectile weapons, realizing that there was not enough space for their magazines, despite the removal of its ability to land on planetary surfaces. As such, the ventral hangar is located in front of the gravity projector fields, capable of carrying 2 squadrons on lateral racks, with four more lateral hangars that can also carry two squadrons apiece. Nevertheless, care is taken not to encroach on the firing arcs; even then, despite the array of armaments the Immobilizer 421 is not intended to be a frontlline combatant. It still carries some serious long-range firepower with 39 heavy long-range guns, with the rapid-fire turbolasers intended for fighting enemies that can fight the Immobilizer 421 at short ranges. Also, the consequences of such limited space are that it can carry a rather limited amount of cargo, as well as a limited number of troops. Also, to maintain hull integrity on that ship, especially with the presence of the gravity field projectors, tensor field generators, inertial compensators and anti-concussion field generators are installed.

It also shares common weaknesses with other interdictors: gravity field projectors are exposed, giving enemies a prime target for bombing runs or for smaller ships capable of closing in to fire at them. Also, commanders wishing to use an Immobilizer 421 will have to deploy escorts effectively in order to protect their Immobilizer 421, even more so than with an ordinary carrier, for a myriad of reasons including the ability to wage electronic warfare (ECM and ECCM), as well as the ability to tend to the fleet's injured (albeit not as much as other capital ships in that size category). In addition, slicing the ship's systems is much more difficult due to the defensive redundancies built into the shilp-wide neural net, powered by the waste heat recovery devices. On that ship, due to the high energy expenditure of the gravity well projector, waste heat recovery devices are fitted to them, a marked departure from usual design practices where they are normally fitted to reactors and engines. Also, the CIC comes equipped with a Castameer tactical display, allowing its crew to track hundreds of targets at once, for interdiction or otherwise, while the CHX 5.0 sound systems being installed throughout the ship allows the crew to maintain morale, among other means.

The Immobilizer 421 is equipped with a myriad of systems designed to detect space mines, such as demolition sensors, which are capable of detecting explosives as well as detonation mechanisms, and a doppraymagno scanner that includes a Doppler sensor array, working in concert with mass detector and other items, such as a crystal gravfield trap, to detect cloaked mines and other hazards of that nature. With the photoamplifier, and the long-range electrophotoreceptor, it can optically resolve items to a greater level of resolution (up to the limits of diffraction). Its sensor suite also enables it to detect hyperspace jumps and reversions thanks to its soliton antenna and radiation sensors, which were used to detect cronau radiation. With the data from the communication monitor being compared to the com-scan, one can also sort out the transmissions data to determine what was important or not, with the target identification network giving the crews inside a precise picture of the battlefield coupled with data from the motion sensor and the thermal detector. Given the collision avoidance system, if any of the sensors detect mines, its crew can attempt to fly out of the way or to shoot down the mine altogether, and possibly find its way back to a location marked with transpond markers, with the universal transceiver package being the standard sensor suite, hooked up to the Castameer tactical display, allowing the crew to display hundreds and maybe thousands of targets at once, with the added processing power of the ship-wide neural net and its redundancies giving some breathing room to the ELINT crew.

Also, after the experience of battle in the Serenno campaign, it as found that the need for reactive armor was pressing, yet explosive reactive armor was ruled out since it was too dangerous to use due to the risk of damaging the gravity well projectors; in addition, limited deployment of interdictors in battlegroups made it so that additional capability can be included that would be worth the decrease in production, namely the addition of two squadrons, NERA and Haruna cap drains.

Finally, it should be noted that, if a gravity well projector malfunctions and that an Immobilizer 421 tries to jump to hyperspace with a faulty gravity well projector, there is a possibility that the Immobilizer 421 could find itself in Otherspace, due to the risk of the hyperdrive shorting out while making the jump and this is where the Otherdrive comes in handy: with the Otherdrive one can buy more time for emergency hyperdrive repairs, and also it can be used to smuggle itself around hyperroute surveillance grids, albeit at a cost of speed. The Otherpilot's ability to make use of waypoints in hyperspace or Otherspace flight, Immobilizer 421s can limp back to base over long distances without having to revert to realspace as often as with a conventional navicomputer. For this reason, factions deploying Immobilizer 421s will attempt to deploy their best battlecruiser pilots on Immobilizer 421s, even though, in realspace combat, the tactical difference an elite battlecruiser pilot makes is limited. And, while a minor improvement, the addition of the Utai Pilot Seat allows its pilot to eject in combat, as well as to enhance the Force-powers relevant to piloting.

You've increased your armaments and defense over the example we have provided in the template as well as increased your hangar count, all while not decreasing your speed and maneuverability except for when your interdictor field is being generated. Even at semi-unique or unique production, this is not an acceptable trade-off. Either lower your armaments and defense ratings or decrease your hangar - you cannot increase all three.

Here is our example of a supercarrier, for reference purposes:

[member="Irina Volkov"] While I readily acknowledge where the extra defense rating comes from, I had to add that the CGT is the mechanism through which the I421 can detect cloaked ships in the relevant Strength.

Now I lowered the speed and maneuverability ratings, and, as with the I419 and I420.

Nevertheless, I had to state exactly how improper reversion from Otherspace to hyperspace is a weakness: lack of correlation between Otherspace mass shadows and hyperspace mass shadows, which is a feature of Otherspace I know a few writers will otherwise miss. Perhaps once those reservations I might have over the removal of that particular weakness are addressed, may I remove it from all three.

I'm not of the mind that being able to detect cloaked ships, unless there's a lacking in other portions of the ship's defenses (i.e; subpar shielding or less point defense and such than usual), can constitute as less than High. You've got the following:

(Which is a seat that also boosts a pilot's force abilities as they relate to starship-related things)

I'd say, aside from the following weaknesses, this is a rather hefty degree of defenses - different than having a large degree of shielding, but this ship is clearly designed for different purposes.

So what I'd suggest is that you cut down on the point defense, perhaps make it an average amount, or otherwise find a way to keep things at a "Moderate" defensive rating. I can give you more suggestions if you would like, but right now the amount of features on the ship is a bit closer to High than it is to Moderate. I had not actually taken note of your rating discrepancies in this submission prior to reading through the description to catch that there was a crystal gravfield trap in this ship as well.

There is a lack of canonical information regarding this, so I cannot give you an answer on it, but the issue is that this will not come up in Roleplay unless a writer intends for that specific scenario to happen. If you want to reword this to state that there's a potential that mass shadows in Otherspace do not match up with hyperspace & realspace mass shadows and thus being able to freely move between the uncharted otherspace and hyperspace as well as realspace can be hazardous, that would be fine.
