Hypheer Vhyrn possesses a slender, athletic build shaped more by years spent around swoops, starfighters, and machinery than by formal military conditioning. She carries herself with an easy confidence that frequently crosses the line into swagger, particularly when she is anywhere near a cockpit.
Her skin is the characteristic green of a Mirialan, while her naturally black hair is dyed a vivid fiery red and generally kept short and somewhat tousled. Piercing blue eyes and intricate dark facial markings make her already distinctive appearance difficult to overlook.
Hypheer's most immediately recognizable feature, however, is the extensive body art covering much of her skin. Traditional dark Mirialan patterns mingle with considerably less traditional fluorescent designs in magenta, turquoise, lime green, orange, and electric blue. Swirls, floral shapes, and abstract patterns spread across her arms, torso, hips, and legs.
Some Mirialans might consider the result excessive.
Hypheer considers that part of the point.
Hypheer Vhyrn has always been most comfortable when moving too quickly.
Speed, danger, competition, and the satisfaction of making a machine perform just beyond what its designers intended remain central to her personality. She is confident, irreverent, fiercely independent, and possessed of a competitive streak that can turn even a routine training exercise into something she desperately wants to win.
Joining the Mahporeem Imperial Remnant has not removed those qualities.
It has merely introduced them to regulations.
Hypheer genuinely wants to become an Imperial combat pilot. For perhaps the first time in her life, she has willingly placed herself inside an organization where individual talent is considered only one part of being a successful pilot. She has consequently found herself learning formation flying, standardized communications, squadron tactics, fleet coordination, patrol procedures, military discipline, and the deeply unpleasant concept that sometimes the correct tactical decision is considerably less exciting than the alternative.
She is trying.
Usually.
Despite her swagger, Hypheer understands that she has something to prove. She may be able to make a starfighter dance, but the Imperial instructors surrounding her know things she does not. Experience as a swoop racer, pirate, independent pilot, and occasional combatant cannot substitute for knowing how to function as one component of a coordinated military formation.
That realization has produced an unusual degree of humility in the Rocket Queen.
Not an excessive amount, admittedly.
Hypheer still believes she is going to become one of the best pilots in the Remnant.
She has simply accepted that she isn't there yet.
- Natural Pilot: Hypheer possesses exceptional instincts behind a set of controls. Spatial awareness, reflexes, improvisation, and an intuitive understanding of momentum allow her to perform maneuvers that would require considerable conscious effort from less naturally gifted pilots. She is particularly dangerous when circumstances become chaotic and established plans begin falling apart.
- Experienced Behind the Controls: "Cadet" does not mean inexperienced. Hypheer has spent years piloting swoops, civilian craft, and starfighters. She understands machinery and already possesses considerable practical flight experience. Her instructors are teaching her how to turn those abilities into those of a professional military pilot rather than teaching her how to fly.
- Unpredictable: Hypheer's background means she does not instinctively approach problems according to conventional military doctrine. While this occasionally frustrates instructors, it also makes her difficult for opponents to anticipate.
- Fearless Under Pressure: Combat does not easily overwhelm her. Hypheer tends to become more focused when circumstances become dangerous, and situations that frighten sensible people often excite her instead.
- Mechanical Familiarity: Years spent maintaining temperamental swoops and equally temperamental spacecraft have left Hypheer comfortable getting her hands dirty. She is no professional engineer, but she understands the machinery she flies and can assist with repairs, troubleshooting, and modifications.
- Determined Student: Beneath the attitude is genuine ambition. Hypheer wants to earn her place rather than simply be handed one, and discovering how much she still has to learn has made her surprisingly committed to her training.
- Pilot Cadet: Hypheer may be an experienced flyer, but she remains inexperienced in formal Imperial starfighter doctrine. Formation discipline, coordinated squadron maneuvers, fleet operations, standardized procedures, and military communications are skills she is still actively learning.
- Individualist: Her instincts were developed around surviving and winning as an individual. Imperial doctrine frequently requires her to suppress those instincts for the benefit of her wingmate, squadron, or larger tactical objective. That adjustment remains difficult.
- Risk Addiction: Hypheer genuinely enjoys danger. She sometimes chooses a more difficult maneuver simply because she believes she can accomplish it. The distinction between calculated aggression and unnecessary recklessness remains an ongoing subject of discussion between Hypheer and her instructors.
- Authority Problems: Military discipline does not come naturally. Hypheer respects competence far more readily than rank and has difficulty hiding her opinion when she believes an order is unnecessarily cautious, inefficient, or boring.
- Overconfidence: Hypheer knows that she is talented. Unfortunately, she occasionally mistakes natural ability for preparedness. Her greatest mistakes tend to happen when she assumes she can improvise her way through something she has never properly learned.
- Queen Vhyrn's Revenge: Hypheer's custom starfighter is practically an extension of herself, but flying such a heavily individualized "ugly" creates complications. Its capabilities, handling characteristics, and systems differ from standardized Imperial craft, making some training exercises and squadron tactics harder to translate directly to her fighter.
Primary Starfighter:
- Queen Vhyrn's Revenge — Hypheer's heavily customized "ugly" starfighter and her most prized possession.
Personal Equipment:
- FAE/A-09 Anti-G Suit
- NZ/ BP-25 Light Blaster Pistol 'Silex'
- Personal Blaster Enyo PDW
- Ion Slicer Vibroknife
- Personal clothing and riding gear
Hypheer Vhyrn was born on Mirial, but whatever expectations might once have existed for her life were quickly overwhelmed by an obsession with speed.
She found her first real sense of belonging among swoop riders. Racing provided everything Hypheer wanted: danger, competition, machinery pushed beyond reasonable limitations, and the freedom to leave everything behind in a cloud of dust. Her aggressive riding and willingness to attempt maneuvers other racers considered suicidal eventually earned her the nickname Rocket Queen.
Swoops were only the beginning.
Hypheer eventually turned her attention toward spacecraft, discovering that the instincts that made her dangerous on the ground translated remarkably well into three-dimensional movement. Starfighters offered something swoops never could. There were no roads, walls, or horizons in space. There was only movement.
Her early career as a starfighter pilot was anything but conventional. Hypheer spent time among pirates and other fringe elements, learning through experience rather than instruction. She became comfortable with pursuit, evasive flying, opportunistic attacks, and surviving situations in which carefully prepared plans rarely survived first contact.
It made her capable.
It did not make her disciplined.
Eventually Hypheer found herself flying alongside more organized Imperial forces. Exposure to professional military pilots forced her to confront an uncomfortable truth. There was an enormous difference between being able to fly exceptionally well and being a trained combat pilot.
A military squadron could accomplish things that even an extraordinary individual pilot could not.
For someone who had spent much of her life treating authority as an obstacle, the realization proved unexpectedly compelling.
Hypheer ultimately entered service with the Mahporeem Imperial Remnant, bringing both her considerable natural talent and an impressive collection of bad habits with her.
Rather than being immediately placed into an operational squadron on the strength of her reputation, Hypheer entered the Remnant's pilot training program as a cadet. She has since spent considerable time learning Imperial fighter doctrine: formation discipline, wingman tactics, communications procedures, fleet coordination, patrol operations, interception doctrine, and the thousand smaller habits that distinguish a talented independent flyer from a professional military pilot.
Some lessons have come easier than others.
Hypheer remains impatient with excessive procedure and has discovered that instructors possess an irritating tendency to notice when she interprets orders creatively. Yet she has also begun developing genuine respect for the discipline behind Imperial starfighter operations.
For once, Hypheer is not looking for a shortcut.
She wants to earn her place.
She continues to fly her personal starfighter, the Queen Vhyrn's Revenge, a custom "ugly" whose unconventional collection of components suits its equally unconventional pilot. The fighter sets Hypheer apart from many of her fellow cadets and remains both a source of pride and an occasional headache for anyone responsible for integrating her into standardized exercises.
The Rocket Queen has traded piracy and independence for Imperial flight instruction, but she has not suddenly become a different person.
She still loves speed.
She still loves danger.
She still believes that any machine can go slightly faster if properly encouraged.
Now, however, she is learning when to hold formation, when to trust her wingmate, when to obey the flight leader—
—and when the correct moment has finally arrived to push the throttle forward and remind everyone why they started calling her the Rocket Queen in the first place.
