Private History Repeats Itself

"Silas! By me!"

The attack had come in the middle of the night. Kahlil barely had the time to sense it and warn the others to prepare before all hell broke loose. The Maw struck, their raiders breaking through the defensive line through sheer body count alone. Uncaring of their own deaths. It was a horrid sight for the untrained. Kahlil's blue saber flashed up as he knocked aside several rounds sent his way. Fully focused on defending those behind him. The other soldiers, returning fire as he acted their shield.

"Remember your training! Find your center, don't exert yourself. Trust your allies to return fire and protect them!"

It wasn't how he wanted Silas's first battle to go, but there was no chance to change it now. The stalemate had been hammered head on. The most the pair of Jedi could do was help hold the line until reinforcements came.

"Yes master!"

On the desert floor, there had been nonstop fighting for the past two days. Silas or Kahlil were expecting such a battle on his first ever mission, but he was confident his master trusted him to tackle the situation head on. The young padawan had barely slept nor eaten due to the lack of supplies they had, not to mention the heat which had been ruthless since their arrival. He and his master had been held up in a trench with alliance troops, a defensive position that held off the maw from getting free reign over the planet. However, the day had come when the brutes were going all out.

Right now they were both at the front, helping to knock away blaster fire and provide cover for the troops behind them. It was effective, yet even Kahlil knew they couldn't do it forever. To the far right, a large group of maw solidiers had rushed their flank and found their way into the long trench. If anything, the soldiers couldn't have a battle on two fronts.

"Master! to our right! the maw have got into our defensive line" he motioned before deflecting back a shot that pinged into the helmet of a maw soldier. They had to stop them, or else they'd all be in a whole heap of trouble. To say the least, Silas sounded nervous and slightly panicked by what was going on, he needed to try and calm down more than anything.

"Deep breaths..."

"Calm, Silas!"

There was nothing more important for a Jedi than to remain calm. His gaze shifted to the side, watching the Maw as they started to flood the trench. It was only a matter of time, all things considered. It was why the soldiers under their care were back and above the trench. Kahlil raised a hand as he deflected another shot, and pulled. The trench wall suddenly caved in under his direction.

All according to plan. A last dich, stall kind of plan. The desert sands that had been propped up cascaded down just as the Master leapt back towards the edge, battering away another flurry of blaster fire as the trench flooded. Drowned any who remained under the weight of the sands. And with it, sand kicked up. A blinding eruption, coating the battlefield in almost a sandstorm.

Kahlil's lightsaber gave a blue hue within it, one of the few specs of light as blasterfire slowed to a crawl. They had bought moments, but they needed more than that.

"Deep breaths"

Upon hearing his master's words he looked over and nodded as confidently as he could. All of his training had led up to this, he couldn't throw that out of the window now. At the same time, Kahlil had a plan for the Maw who had entered their trench. Using the force he made the sand wall collapse, leaving the maw below to suffocate in the sand. At the same time, Kahlil also created an environment similar to a sandstorm, leaving everyone clueless as to where they were shooting and moving.

The only thing that gave him an idea of where Kahlil was located was his lightsaber "Master! we... we've got to move forwards and repel the attack while we have the chance!" given everyone was blind, they all had a chance to move into cover closer to the enemy. It was risky, but if they wanted to apply more pressure on their attackers they needed to be more aggressive.

Clearing his badly dried throat, he moved more closer to him and dodged some stray blaster fire that narrowly skimmed him, scorching the gear he was wearing "We've just got to be cautious of their panic!"

"No. We do not charge in."

Kahlil glanced to Silas for a moment before offering a grin. His saber shut down, letting the blue glow around him fade. And the beacon the Maw was firing against disappear. Elsewhere, the same glow brightened. Farther away, all over the place. Away from the troopers. It was a simple trick of the light, but it pulled the blaster fire of the Maw every which way.

Away from them, was the most important part of it all.

"It'll buy us a second. Regroup with the others, get ready. We're here to help defend, not lead the assault."

Silas looked to him with curiosity when he suggested that they didn't push the attack. He was unsure what his master was going to do, but he needed to do something fast. Seeing Kahlil smirk, the man turned off his lightsaber and suddenly created some kind of force illusion. Around the maw blue lights glowed dimly, identical to that of his lightsaber. Without hesitation the maw fired at that instead, believing that the Jedi had indeed tried to push them back.

"That was genius master!" the padawan replied with a smirk, soon nodding to him when he ordered him to fall back to their troops "Right away," Silas said without fuss, turning his blade off before running back to the soldiers who were only a short distance behind them " Move the wounded while you can and prepare your weapon for the next assault, we don't have long left!"" the teen shouted to the men, who were quite unsure if they should be taking orders from a kid. Even so, they knew he was Kahlil's padawan and taking orders from him, so they all complied and began trying to regather themselves.

"<The soldiers are prepping master, how long do we have left?"

Kahlil stayed where he was, letting his his gaze wander through the cloud of dust. Planning, focusing. The Force ebbed and flowed around him, moving through the sands bit by bit. When Silas returned, the Jedi gave him a brief smile. The time they had left before the cloud cleared was far less than he would've liked, but the illusions were enough. More importantly, it let him work.

"Not much longer. Hunker down with the others. Get it fortified. I'll hold them here."

His turned his gaze towards the settling sands. The presence of the Maw, still just outside it. The random blaster fire had slowed. They realized what was going on. Or at least had an idea.

The young padawan nodded more confidently to the man this time "Yes master, just try not to get yourself killed!" Silas shouted before heading back to the troops again to make sure they had at least somewhat fortified the position. It wasn't perfect, but they at least kept most of them in cover behind whatever cover they could find, rocks, loose debris, fox holes you name it.

"Everyone hunker up! Master Kahlil has something brewing" he warned the troops who soon made sure their cover was going to last for whatever he was planning. Running and jumping into a fox whole with a fellow solidier Silas looked back to the dim outline of Kahlil within the storm "Kahlil Noble is one crazy Jedi kid, you sure he knows what he's doing?" the man asked from the right of him nervously. Turning his head to the voice, his lips formed into a calm smile.

"I bet my life on it sir" he replied back without hesitation. If anyone knew what they were doing here it was certainly the man who stood in the heat of the storm.

"Don't worry, I've no intention of dying here."

Kahlil lifted a hand, gave the Padawan a simple thumbs up. His plan was already set into motion. Sides, he only needed to hold them back long enough for reinforcements to arrive. Once the others were hunkered down, once the sands dissipated, he'd start. The blue of his saber ignited as those of the Maw that remained all lifted their blasters. There was a moment of silence before the blaster fire picked right back up.

The Master's blade ignited in a flash of blue. He moved, weaving through the shots with far more ease than should be possible. All with a calm smile on his face. Alone like this, with so many people shooting at him, he was in his element. They continued regardless, red blasts ripping through the air. Scorching the sands, sailing by him. But none could hit him. They approached, they closed in, and his trap went off.

A bright light burned through the sands. Runes flashed, encircling him, spreading farther out from where he'd reached through the sand. Then a bright, blinding light filled the area. When it faded, there were no more blasters firing in his direction. The marauders entire front line, all those who stepped into his runes, they were gone. Only the sands remained. Kahlil took a breath as he lifted his blade once more, staring down those who remained.

Just as the sky lit up with more lights. Reinforcements from the Alliance. Gunships came soaring in, unleashing their own barrage to cut the Maw off at the pass. Their gambit had failed.

Silas narrowed his eyes at Kahlil when his lightsaber ignited, almost as if he was going to take them all on his own. To his surprise, he did just that. Running and weaving around their shots gracefully, Kahlil looked unstoppable as he swiftly made haste toward their front line. However, there was a reason behind his genius, Kahlil had a trick up his sleeve all along.

Silas's eyes opened wide to see most of the men who fired disappear into the sands they stood on. The only thing he could think of was that Master Kahlil must have set up all the traps during the conjuring of the sand storm, a time when the Maw couldn't see anything. Even though he had knocked out a large portion, there were still many who were eager to finally shoot him down with a raise of their blasters.

Suddenly, alliance ships burst into the sky to end that party. The maw troops were peppered with relentless blaster fire, to the point where their morales were shattered. In turn, they put their tails between their legs and began to retreat, humiliated by how a single Jedi had halted their certain victory.

Silas smiled gratefully towards his master and lifted himself out of the hole when the coast was clear, followed by the soldier who took his hand to exit and gave him a quick nod "Tell your master I owe him a drink later" the man smirked, leaving Silas to briefly grin and head back over to Kahlil.

"Sometimes master, I can't tell if you're mad or genius," Silas said lightheartedly, briefly using the time to wipe off the sand from his overalls and hair. They all had been fighting hard for hours on end, but who knew when the Maw would return. They were relentless brutes, for all Silas knew they could be regrouping.

"Do you think they'll attack again soon master? with the number of bodies they keep throwing at us I fear we may not be able to hold them off forever" Silas explains, his dry throat making it harder to speak "And uh... can I have some of your water please?"

"A bit of both, I imagine."

Kahlil let out a heavy breath before lowering his saber to his side and just letting the blade extinguish. He was tired. Very tired. And yet he still cracked a grin down towards Silas before unhooking the canteen on his hip and tossing it the boy's way.

"They don't have the bodies to do that again. They're not unlimited. For right now, this battle is won. So take a breath and don't worry about tomorrow until tomorrow, okay?"

Silas gave Kahlil a thankful nod and took a big gulp of water, relieving himself from a terrible dry throat. Even if he was mad, Kahlil almost seemed to know what he was doing. In a way, it was almost like the genius was behind his madness "I wouldn't disagree with that master" Silas grinned before taking another quick sip to satisfy himself.

Lightly tossing it back to him, Silas stood beside him and looked into the far distance. The sun was going down and darkness crept in once more, another hard day was beginning to pass like those before it.

"I will master. After all, tomorrow is a new day right?" he said thoughtfully with a warm smile. The next day was probably going to be harder, but who cared? They had both fought valiantly and restlessly, now was the time for rest and review.

Not only had he learned to keep calm but also a valuable aspect of life... focus on the now and keep your worries for tomorrow.

That was one heck of a thing to live by.
