Gunfight on Permafrost (open) - Weekend Treasure Hunt 30

Parker observed the surrounding area, but it was hard to see because of the low visibility. The blustery wind outside was picking up, another blizzard could be on the approach. As he was staring at various equipment he felt a presence behind him. Before he could react, the figure had him compromised and held a blaster to his neck.

Mathas Cavyr said:
"Drop it!"
Myles taught Parker not to fight back when he was outmaneuvered so Parker complied and slowly put the scattergun on the ground to comply with the man's order. Will the mission be over this quick? He thought to himself. Before he thought of an answer he heard another voice chime in with confidence.

"You won't have to go far. He works for me" Myles added as he came out of the storage area. With the man approaching Parker from the rear, Myles approached the unknown assailant from behind.

Holding his blaster carbine at the ready to fire, he had no intention of letting a shot ring out, unless it was needed.

"I will assume that you are here because of a certain transmission? Certainly not here for sight seeing. We mean you no harm, we are simply just investigating the site." Myles would try to defuse the situation as best as he could.

Krass didn't get a response from her communication which could be a bad thing or a good thing. Might mean they were in there well unable to speak or move.. or they had moved on and were out of range. Both of whihc well stil meant she needed to go and work to try and get this wall down. She slammed the hammer into it as the impact sounded off like a detonation and it was directional. Right into the stone and metal getting cracks that she needed. A small hole to start forming so she could move through it with her smaller frame. Hopefuly and she was just going by being outside but it wouldn't cause to much damage outside of exposing the elements outside to the inside now.

The knife sawed through the bindings eventually with absolutely no help from the bumping and rumbling of the ship itself. Her hands now free, she slid the knife back into her boot and took stock of the door locking her in. It wasn't exactly absolute security, but the door controls weren't exactly a pushover. She was rusty, but she knew her way around at least basic security systems at the very least. The cover popped off the lock with some encouragement and revealed a nest of electronics. Frowning, Riva got to work on freeing herself as the deck beneath her feet rumbled.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ship swooped low over the base itself and circled the location. Smoke plumed out from the facility and down upon the snow were the clear signs of tracks from individuals moving towards the building. The ship slowed its orbit and gimballed guns rotated down to aim at the facility. A split second later, the vessel opened up full bore with all guns.

Blaster fire rained down on the facility sending fire and debris in all directions. The ship targeted primarily the hangar itself, but it was only a matter of time before they moved on to other areas of the base. The goal, however, was clear: destroy all means of escape and remove most, if not all, resistance. To the pirates, even broken valuables were still valuables.

Along the sides of the ship, ports opened up revealing the nose-cones of missiles. Designed as an all purpose weapon system, the pirates were taking no chances, but credits were credits. The missiles were a backup...

Ok so there was still no answer from Jorus. Looking around she didn't see any bodies she looked around the corner and straight ahead a small sign said that the laboratories were that way. So what were they looking into here?

Cautious she moved forward trying to keep aware of her surroundings listening for any sounds that would tip her off that she wasn't alone. Walking up on her right she saw that the first lab was dark, she didn't know if that was good or bad. The main lab though was bathed in the red glow of knowing it was on back up power. She reached out to touch the door to find it locked.

"hmm" she moved and pressed her forehead to the glass peering in, was there someone there? She could see just beyond the first station someone's feet. They were face down. But were they dead? She banged on the glass, "HEY!! HEY!! "

She waited to see if there was any movement it didn't look good. A brief frightening thought don't let that be someone I know, and don't let them be dead. Yep...nope...feth.

She looked at the locks she might be able to trip it up, but what if the lab sealed because of something toxic. She could innocently infect everyone. "Where's [member="Coren Starchaser"] and his voodoo magic when you need him" She had to think..maybe AB could calculate the odds. OR interface with the computer...YES..

"AB, I need you lock the ship down and come here"

Mathas lowered his gun and turned to his side to address the newcomer. First helping retrieve the scattergun for the first man and handing it back with a good-natured "Sorry", he extended a hand to the new man as he introduced himself and addressed the man's question.

"Mathas. Correct. We were coming down to investigate but our shuttle was shot down shortly before we could land." He paused to pull some nuts from his pocket and feed them into his mouth. In conditions as frigid as this, the exercise of any muscles produced disparate results in body temperature. "I assume the gunship we were tailing was yours?"

The comlink within Mathas' jacket beeped again. "What is it?" he asked into his jacket, but before any voice could answer, Mathas felt his world spasming out of focus for the second time in what had surely been less than half an hour. Staggering backward, he leaned towards the wall for support as the ground quaked under the pounding force of orbital bombardment. Ice fell and thunder from the heavens drowned out whatever minute sounds were coming from the comlink.

A second round of bombardment rocked Mathas' world again, this time knocking him to the ground. One of the nuts flew out of his mouth, bouncing several metres across the frosty floor. With the element of surprise eliminated, however, it was substantially easier to recover from this tremor, and within moments Mathas was back on his feet again with a grunt. Looking around to contextualise the extent of the orbital assault, he immediately noticed that the entrance he had just come through had caved in, and the catwalk had collapsed into a slope of twisted metal. Several of the vehicles were mangled, unusable. A couple seemed workable, but were undoubtedly useless in this situation regardless.

"This way!" Mathas called, pointing his pistol in the direction of the hallway that he had sent one of his accomplices in earlier. He shot a cheeky wink at Myles and remarked, "No hard feelings, eh?" before running towards the hallway. Aftershocks riddled his efforts with difficulty, and Mathas suspected that the bombardment was still ongoing.

The hallway roof was collapsing, haphazardly dumping snow and metal on the ground below. Using his free hand to shelter his head, Mathas crossed the connecting passage into the other half of the base, and was rewarded with the force of renewed bombardments pummeling the walls and roof. Noticing a fresh corpse on the floor, Mathas immediately recognised it as the man he had sent here earlier, his head crushed by collapsing metalwork. Looking back up, Mathas could've sworn that he saw human movement beyond in the corridors, but before he could investigate the roof dropped a pile of snow in front of him and he instinctively veered to the alternate pathway on his right. At the next intersection, he discovered an emergency exit to his right again. Mathas kicked the door in, only to find a hopelessly distorted staircase and a sizzling fire in the room beyond. Shouting "Kriff!", he slammed the door shut and turned back. With that, he began to run down the corridor in the other direction, all while the ground convulsed beneath him and the heavens above rained ice and metal own with merciless fervor.

Myles noticed that the man retrieved Parker's scattergun and handed it back to him, to which he was grateful. "No worries stranger, can't be too careful around here. Especially in unknown territory."
He extended his hand out for a hearty shake giving the man a nod "Myles Davorak. Sorry you got shot down Mathas, seems that the situation here is more complicated than I thought"

Slinging his rifle back over his shoulder he nodded again at Mathas' response "The big tugboat you mean?" He gave a jovial chuckle "That's my ship alright, just landed her on a clearing not far from here should you need a lift."

The conversation was interrupted by the facility going into a massive quake-like state. Myles shouted toward his operative "Gladius! Retreat back to the ship, make sure you are a safe distance away!" He yelled as his balance was thrown off by the surgical strike.

"What the fething kriff!!!" came out of his mouth as soon as he hit a nearby wall with an audible thud. Mathas was already taking action as the man shot a wink to Myles "Heh, after this hellstorm, I think a few stiff drinks are in order Mathas" he joked. With his rifle slung over his back, Myles sprinted behind his new acquaintance while Parker ran out of a nearby opening.

The place was coming apart like a puzzle board, jagged edges of the building came crashing down like a hard rain. Snow flooded in the building like water, the freezing temperatures piercing Myles' face. Darting behind Mathas the whole way, they seemed to hit dead ends no matter which way they went.

Out of instinct and rage Myles shouted out "CENTER OF THE BUILDING! Structure will be the strongest there! "

Pointing to a nearby door Myles darted toward the entryway with his carbine at the ready. Kicking the door down with all of his might, a room was revealed to the group. Scanners, communications equipment and relays littered the entirety of the room. Must be a Comms Center Myles thought.

Ducking and laying low should help against the bombardment he found. Once the bombardment was over, Myles would do a head count and make sure his traveling companions were secure. Next step would be to double-time it and see if they could find [member="Jorus Merrill"] before their new guests would

Just as she thought she was going to get a handle on all of this the building began to do the shimmy shimmy shake. Rekha stuck her hands out for balance, "what the feth?"

Then she heard yelling and foot steps running. Oh did someone push the red button or something? She could hear the the shifting walls as they tried to fight against the pressure. AB's low whistles turned shrill as he slid side to side coming through the entrance to the complex. Rekha looking around saw a place to wait it out, "over here" She dropped to her knees and slid under a counter.

Looking out she watched a few of the tiles from the ceiling fall shattering on the floor. Damn. So where was everyone?

The centre of the facility — a room filled with broken scanners and sparking communications equipment — did have a stronger structure as Myles had suggested, but even here they were not safe from the torrential flow of solid and melted ice. Every step remained a struggle as the fury of the exterior bombardment invoked more seismic activity and falling ice. Mathas stumbled and fell onto a computer terminal, then on a desk as he attempted what should have been an easy task of navigating the simple room layout.

A welcome reprieve arrived several minutes later. Relief came in the form of silence and a stable floor, roof and walls. The lack of thundering booms, shaking floor or collapsing ice felt almost foreign after having been subjected to them for so long, but it provided an opportunity for Mathas and the others to explore their surroundings.

The room they were in looked to be some sort of communications facility, but unsurprisingly it was in ruins and the occupants were dead. Peeking outside, Mathas noticed that the rest of the facility wasn't in much better shape. As the group continued to investigate the communications centre, they might have noticed that the room appeared to have been sawed in half by a wall of ice that kept them segregated from whatever was on the other side. And that was particularly concerning given that Jorus Merrill's distress call had probably been launched from this room — and probably from the other side of this ice wall.

Mathas' comlink beeped and he checked in another message from his crew in orbit. Some ships were headed in their direction.

"Somebody is trying to make sure we're dead," Mathas commented, "but they want to keep this place intact. They're looking for something here."

Noting the movement that [member="Mathas Cavyr"] engaged, he could tell that Mathas was assessing their situation. Assessment was a common reaction that was very popular in his line of work. With the silence of the facility, Myles knew that this wouldn't be the case for long. He offered further info to his new acquaintance, unsure of what events will come to pass.

"Guarantee they will send a strike team in to clean up their mess. We gotta get a move one while we have the chance." Although the ship could just be waiting for movement before gunning down the facility further. Myles dare not instruct The Tempest to take on the craft as he could sustain losses that would be non-repairable.

"I wonder if Merrill attracted the wrong crowd with his message?" The possibilities are endless but he hoped that this adventure would be one where he ends up alive and well.

Rekha peeked out she was just by the labs having come from the communications area she could hear the voices of two men [member="Myles Davorak"] [member="Mathas Cavyr"] while AB chirped about activity Rekha raised a finger to shush him.

They voices didn't sound intimidating but then who were they? Rekha inched across the floor on her knees peering around the corners to look down into the darkness. A single brow arched as she listened were they friends of Jorus? They called him Merrill...so no on that count. She could shoot and ask questions later. She smiled, that would be bad sabaac wouldn't it?

She shook her head, now now girl you know better...so..she opted for another way, "WHO IS THERE?:" she called to them, would they answer? Would they shoot first....she ducked a little lower...maybe....she should lay on the floor.

AB groaned.

Mathas looked at Myles when the latter commented on an impending strike team.

"No question about it. Anything else worth investigating here? We need to move quickly."

"I wonder if Merrill attracted the wrong crowd with his message?" the other man asked.

"I've no doubt. And now that we've seen what they can do, my friend, I'd suggest that we not be here when they arrive. But we should see if we can find Jor --"

A yell from outside in the corridor cut him off. Annoyance and surprise flickered across Mathas' face for a moment, and he looked at Myles again for a moment, before he checked the corridor outside, blaster in hand. A woman lay on the floor, with a seemingly anticipatory expression on her face.

"You looking for him as well?" he called out to her, doing his best to keep his tone inviting. Naturally, it was implicit that the subject was mutual knowledge. Why else would she be here? "We haven't got time to crawl around. Some people are coming, and they probably want us dead."
