Description: Subspace is a separate dimension from realspace, like hyperspace and otherspace. Iron Crown, in cooperation with Santhe/Sienar, has adapted a rare piece of Unknown Regions technology by way of advanced technometry and a hyperspace accident, along with a significant amount of time and money. The end result is a new form of faster-than-light transit: the ability to physically enter subspace.

 • (+) A vessel travelling in subspace is not affected by interdiction.

 • (-) Travel via subspace is turbulent enough that vessels must be durable in construction, and should be outfitted with very good (military-grade, advanced, or redundant) inertial dampeners. Extensive use of condensed-matter composite is also recommended. Even with such countermeasures, subspace travel can be a rocky ride, especially near densely populated worlds.

 • (-) Travel via subspace is, on average, much slower than travel via hyperspace. The Ghostwalker is an elite and expensive piece of proprietary technology, and it can do a maximum of Class 15, comparable to an emergency backup hyperdrive. This tends to preclude use of the Ghostwalker for long-distance jaunts.

 • (-) The terrain of subspace is significantly different from that of hyperspace. Planetary mass shadows are less pronounced than in hyperspace, causing great turbulence but not outright destruction. Turbulence also increases with proximity to subspace communications networks, which are everywhere. Due to the prevalence of active subspace comms along major hyperlanes, those routes may actually be slower for a Ghostwalker-equipped vessel while traveling in subspace. This makes the Ghostwalker ill-suited for extended use within highly developed systems and routes.

 • (-) Likewise, the terrain of subspace is generally not known with the same precision as that of hyperspace. As physical subspace travel is the definition of uncharted territory, subspace carries its own hazards. An emergency reversion mechanism analogous to that of a normal hyperdrive may cause an unexpected reversion from subspace to realspace. Roughly one jump in ten comes up short, requiring a more roundabout course; this ratio can be reduced with careful analysis of local subspace conditions, including communications factors.

 • (+) However, the Ghostwalker is well suited to making short jumps through territory that is impassable in realspace and hyperspace. For example, then, a Ghostwalker-equipped vessel could transit the Tion Cluster by hyperspace, take a short and turbulent subspace ride through the otherwise impassable Indrexu Spiral Nebula, and re-enter hyperspace or realspace on the other side of the Spiral.

 • (+) The Ghostwalker does not trigger hyperspace early warning/reversion sensors. On nearby subspace comm networks, jumps and reversions may cause a burst of comm static comparable to common, natural interference events. This static varies by the size of ship and the nature of the local dynamic subspace terrain.

 • (+) Due to the Ghostwalker’s precision and low top speed, it can be used for intra-system travel. Many systems require vessels to exit hyperspace some distance from a given planet and proceed at sublight for many hours or days, for a variety of reasons. A short subspace jump can cut that time to minutes, though most developed worlds have enough subspace transmitters to cause relatively high turbulence on final approach.

 • (-) Though the Ghostwalker technology is not common knowledge, eventually someone will realize that a network of ultra-high-powered subspace transmitters could cause severe turbulence and potentially force an early reversion, in a manner analogous to unreliable interdiction. The cost would be a significant localized scramble of all communications not involving the HoloNet or antiquated EM technology (e.g. radio, laser).

Apologies this needed some internal discussion and then Christmas overtook things.

First of all this is entirely new tech. Utterly groundbreaking. Just to kick this off on a limited scale I'll be looking for 100 posts dev.

In terms of production this needs to be a very limited first run. Limited is the correct value here, but I just want to reiterate there needs to be restraint. It should be on a very limited number of prototype vessels.

This needs some more limitations. Subspace is only used for signals at the moment and the range and speed of transmissions is utterly different to hyperspace.

I'm thinking more like Hyper drive class equivalency of 100 and a range of only a system or two. This also moves the technology away somewhat from a Hyper drive. Very short range, very slow, but you can ghost in close.

I think that's an entirely appropriate set of requirements. Go ahead and archive. I'll look into dev possibilities and will make the necessary edits when the time comes.
