Session One

Coruscant

"Tell me, what do you know of Shii-Cho?" It was a basic question, and in some ways she felt it might insult his intelligence, considering the way his life seemed to revolve around training... But it was a question which needed to be asked. Asha needed to gauge where he was up to, so she could build upon it. The pair were stood within Asha's personal training-room on Coruscant, which was considerably larger than your standard dojo. To one side lay a table, upon which two glasses and a small food hamper rested ready for when the session was over. But it had hardly even begun, despite the numerous drills Jericho had already been through.

If there was one thing Asha knew, however, it was that there was only so far practical could get you, and likewise there was only so far theory could. There needed to be a balance of both where learning, where progression, was concerned. And part of Jericho's development was the necessity of speech... Hence the question. It required him to be verbal, to talk to her. So far she had barely gotten a word from him, and she understood his situation, having been through similar herself - the lure of silence was in many ways deadly, once you cease to speak it becomes almost impossible to begin again, and even attempting to feels suffocating, like you're sacrificing a breath of air for a pointless word...

Asha smiled, attempting to have him relax... Although she knew that wasn't what was making this difficult. Jericho was a very able Padawan, she could not fault him in his progression thus far, but often his understanding was lost on Asha, more than a nod of the head was required in many cases, to know whether a student fully grasped a concept or idea, and such was missing for their relationship. While waiting for a response she studied the Padawan before her, the braid he still wore despite Asha having sensed his indifference surrounding it, the attire he sported, Jedi in appearance only lacking the signature robes, after all this was a training session...

He sat quitely alone in the Jedi archive reading up on the style of sokan and stealth. From the training session with his master, his thrist of knowledge for the art was far from quenched and for the last couple days he continued to read and train on his own. Occasionally sneaking around his fellow jedi padawans while their training session and leaving unnoticed. After some time, Master Seren summoned the young padawan from the archive for some more training, of course he quietly accept with his usual nod and went on his way. Finally reaching his destination he stood within Master Seren's personal training-room on Coruscant, which was much larger than the normal standard training dojo.

This where for some hours she put him through some drill and for himself he gave his one hundred and ten percent effort in doing. At some drills involving his phyiscal self he would find a way to intensify the drill or workout. He took a knee, placing a fist on the ground to keep himself up, lightly panting from the instense training at his limit needing a short rest beginning again. While he took time to think about prior training, keeping his mind sharp and fast, ready to use anything he has learned up to this point. After taking 30 seconds of rest he stood up once more ready to train again, forcing his body to work and become stronger from it but something caught him by surprise. His master instead asked him a question that involved him to verbally answer instead of just his usual nod or shake of his head. He could of just took out his saber and move to spar to show her what he knew. But it would show little of progression of their relationship between one and other as master and student and progession is needed to gain more knowledge.

"Shii-Cho, also known as the Way of the Sarlacc, is the first of the seven forms of lightsaber combat. This combat form was developed during the transitional period within the Jedi Order from ancient metal swords to more contemporary lightsabers, as stated in the jedi archive. Shii-cho is the most ancient style of lightsaber combat, Lightsabers were wielded in mostly the same manner similar to swords, in the manner of many different maneuvers, such as attacks or parries and has remained for the most part unchanged, as the key principles of the old sword-fighting methods continued to be used in the form itself, styles similar from the mandalores, I would say. The simplicity and persistent methods of the form led it to being also known as the "Determination Form". Because how consistent and repetitive the moves are it can even be taught to younglings, such as myself being taught as a youngling. Even so, every good master needs to understand the use of basics, as it makes one stronger and skillful as it is the first form it stands as a basis of all the other forms. It can be defensive as Soreau or aggressive as Ataru, as powerful and relentless as Shien or smooth and with steady flow as Nimen. In the field of battle if all else fails, one can always fall back on this specific form since it is the most practiced and reliable form, in my opinion, master Seren."

He said making it sound more like a report rather than a casual conversation between master and student, it was a start at least. He could also of said more but this was the most he had ever spoke to anyone before and he didn't wish to overwhelm her with all the information he gathered at once. Granted, she was a master and knew about the information, but admittingly he was somewhat nervous. The young padawan revealed his voice was exceptionally deep for his age, a warriors voice. After finishing what he had to say, he bowed his head and pulled out his saber and readied it assume that that would do a lesson on the form.

Wow. Jericho had not only responded, but with a flurry of knowledge that she hadn't expected. Not because she doubted he knew it, but because she doubted he would wish to speak so much. At most she had expected a few basic statements... This was serious progress, and Asha could not help but smile in response. His optimism with the Form was amiable, also, but had he considered the flaws? Maybe she should highlight such before they began the practical session. "Very good, Jericho. However, what you explained was Niman, which is a mixture of all the Forms, taking aspects from each. Shii-Cho is very rigid as a Form, focused on six specific zones and the Mark of Contact known as the Sun Djem. While it is a good form to fall back on, if driven to necessity, it is also very predictable and clumsy... Except for in the hands of a Master. However, I understand what you mean about it being the most practised, most Jedi spent all their early years on just this specific Form." Nodding her head she took a step back from her Padawan, and waited for a moment.

"Today we will focus upon Shii-Cho. Specifically the Six Zones. Do you know what these zones are, Jericho?" The first step was understanding, the second application. This particular session required that he knew the zones, otherwise he would fall at the first hurdle. Depending on how swiftly he grew into Shii-Cho, Asha was willing to move his training on further. But as of yet she had no idea which Form he wished to learn. That would be something she needed to amend. "While we are on the subject of Lightsaber Forms, which of the Six do you seek to learn next?" She emphasised the word six, immediately putting a block between his learning and Form Seven: Vaapad. That was completely off bounds, until his training was no longer her responsibility. And that would only take place when he, too, was a Knight. Vaapad was dangerous.

While she waited on his response the Knight ventured across to the table, her body remaining turned in his direction still so as not to have her back to him. She did not wish to be rude, or seem it. From the table she took a glass, and filled it with a fresh juice. Jericho, she could tell, was exhausted from their session, after all they had already been in session for several hours. The brief break he had taken between the drills and her question revealed just how tired he was, so she would permit him a break while they discussed intricacies. "You can put the lightsaber away for now, but you had the right idea - Shii-Cho is on our agenda for the next few Martial-based sessions." Returning to the side of her Padawan she offered him the glass of juice, and gestured him to a cushion. "Now you are willing to talk, I feel we should discuss where you wish this Apprenticeship to lead, aims for the future, possible paths, before you lapse back into silence. Do not get me wrong, I understand how it is, talking is a fickle thing, unnecessary in many aspects, but between a Master and their Apprentice? Communication is key." Asha smiled, to try and keep him in a comfortable position. She was not telling him off, nor criticising, simply stating the situation as it presently was.

When he noticed her smile, he didn't know how to properly react so he merely turned his head away to keep from facing her. But of course that didn't last long, as she spoke he took in everything she was teaching him and he nodded. However, I understand what you mean about it being the most practised, most Jedi spent all their early years on just this specific Form." He understood the weaknesses to a higher extent and had a better grasp of Niman. With that information he re-calculated what he though of the form and tactics he would used with the form in the field of battle.

Jericho let out a soft sigh when she asked him about the six zones of the form. She was expecting more words to come from his lips, he light patted the back of his head turned on his saber at only one end to fit the form and proceeded. "The body, whether it be human or alien, is divided into 6 zones, where attacks or parries can occur." He said sounded putting both hands on his saber and getting into the stance. "Zone one, Head or neck. Zone two, right arm & side. Zone three, Left arm & side. Zone four, Back. Zone five, Right leg. Zone 6, left leg." He said performing the proper strikes for each zone moving foreword for each strike and moving backward for each parry. "Attacks and parries zone are in terms to the body part in that zone. Attack one, is a blow to the opponent's head, "parry two" the block of an attack to your right arm or side, and so on and so forth. So obviously, attack zones are the zones that you see on your opponent, while parry zones are the zones that you see on your own body." He said finishing the form with spin of his saber and turning it off and facing his master.

He wanted to show her that he was far from just a muscle head grunt, he wanted to show her that he had the mental competence as well as the martial prowess. More for the fact that he wanted to move on to more advance lesson than for her approval. But it would be a warm bonus to get both, after doing the form he was asked another question the needed him to speak. What form did he wish to learn? That was an interesting question, he wanted to learn them all and become at least an adept in all of them. But he could only learn one form at a time, he assumed, so which would he start? More aggressive forms such as Ataru and Shien. Or more defensive forms such as Makashi and Soreau. No, the best would be the combination of all forms to have a stronger basis in the other forms, Nimen. He quickly made up his mind, "Nimen." He said confidently.

He took anothe breathe before officially putting his saber away as his master instructed him. She went to his side and offered him a glass of juice, which he moved over and took then placed the on the table, his way of politely rejecting the offer. When she gestured him to a cushion he again couldn't help but refuse, keeping a distance between the two then took a knee. Again she was expecting him to speak some more because he answered, so much talking, he personally disliked, but if this was expected of him to progress he would have to do it. "I.." He started off with a quiet whisper with his head down facing the floor. revealing he had little interpersonal skills outside speaking about what he learns which was about martial skills and the force. "I...want..." He said struggling. "I wish for...." He shook his head for a moment and tried again. "I..." He gritted his teeth, it wasn't because he couldn't speak obvious, but he was exceptionally nervous. He took in a breath of air, "I....want....to protect others. I...Don't care....about rank..." He clenched his fist growing a bit more confident. "I want to protect others...And I'll be willing to do anything to do it."

As suspected, Jericho had already been studying in this Form, after all he had focused heavily on the martial aspects of his training. In some ways, this made her want to change up the lesson, and as Jericho went through the various manuevers of Shii-Cho she was pouring over her knowledge for something which would compliment it, his combat-orientated mindset... But at the same time she did not want to fully encourage it. A Jedi had to know more than how to fight, they needed to know aspects such as diplomacy, amongst other things. One's lightsaber could not be a Padawan's first port of call. "Very good, Jericho, you have been practising." And what's more, he was talking. But she would not belittle him by mentioning as much, to do so would be very rude of her.

She could see him thinking about her second question, his mind whirring as it sought to latch on to one firm idea. And when he did speak, a smile traced her lips. Niman was her own form, the one she had been raised to use. Windrage had almost completely skipped Shii-Cho, his way of introducing a student to lightsabers had been much more natural and lax. As she advanced he had taught her the foundations of each form, just so that her Niman was founded on a physical set of skills rather than a hap-hazard do as you please approach, which is what many thought it was. "Niman, very well. Luckily for you, that is a strength of mine. Would you be seeking to learn Jar'Kai also, or only the Form itself?" And if he sought to learn Niman, it gave her a perfect reason to begin Force training with him soon, also.

It seemed he had no desire to rest, refusing the drink and the pillow, and instead remained in a rigid position - choosing to kneel upon the ground. When he spoke his words became tangled, lost, as though he had never fully learnt how to speak, despite the fact she had already heard him do so... But then she realised what the issue was. All he had heard him say so far were definitions and explanations. Perhaps it was the social aspects that he lacked... Which was another hurdle to pass over. Luckily for both of them, she knew a talkative and friendly little boy who could ease Jericho into it. "And you shall protect and help others, Jericho, that is one of the pinnacle aspects of being a Jedi." With a small frown she bit her lip. "But a Jedi also knows when it is not their place to do something, when they are not strong enough, or wise enough, or well enough. Do not let your eagerness, your loyalty and determination, shroud that. You could do more harm than good by not knowing when to stand down."

"I want you and Thurion to meet properly, Jericho. I think it would do you a world of good to speak with him. He is only eight, but he's friendly and caring." With a small smile, she then said; "But back to the focus of todays lesson... Your decision: continue with Shii-Cho, or move onto Niman?" She did not like to keep an able-Padawan lingering on Form One for longer than necessary, to Asha it was too flawed a Form.
