The world was dark. Darker now even than it'd ever been before, blackness enveloped the mines and frantic waves of panic rose through the ranks of the slaves. Jak hugged the wall as the human cattle began to surge forward. His chains rattled as he futilely struck them with a rock he'd found in a feeble attempt to break them. The chain tugged and he fell forward from his safe haven on the wall, slamming hard onto the hard stone. He tasted iron. Warmth lingered on his lips as he dragged himself up to avoid being trampled by the horde of flesh pushing its way through the darkness.

They marched on. Jak was confused and afraid, normally the slavers just led them back out onto the surface after their shift, for chow and to make camp. Something was different this time. The slavers themselves seemed edgy and occasionally the rock shook from impacts on the surface. Who was attacking them? Were they slavers? Military? From down in the depths it was impossible to say. A slaves life was ruled by darkness down here. He could almost feel the anxiety that radiated off of the slavers, and the occasional radio crackle followed by gunfire affirmed his suspicions.

A glaring light appeared after three hours of marching, the exit to the cave. Many had died stumbling in the darkness at the feet of the others slaves, falling and getting trampled underfoot, becoming a literal dead weight. Jak squinted his eyes at the opening. All he saw was an overbearing light. After the last slave marched through this light the thunder of gunfire erupted and Jak instinctively hit the deck. His vision was still slowly returning and he could make out grayish blobs firing at and killing the slaver blobs. Who were these people? After the remaining slavers threw down their arms the blobs moved closer and they slowly began to come into focus. Republic Soldiers began helping everyone up and distributing food and water, as well as taking note of all the wounded. A tall machine gunner cut Jak's chains and hoisted him onto his shoulders. From the shoulders of the mountainous man Jak looked over the heads of all of his former slaves and thought of freedom as he looked to the bright blue sky. Ships darted past and Jak grinned. He wanted this type of life.
