Strengths:
  • Solid Manufacture - While produced by a variety of manufacturers on Ganath, the design of the Cuirass Armor, or just Cuirass for short, has been entirely standardized by order of the King. Because of this and the now consistent supply of quality materials brought about by trade agreements with the Royal Ganathan Trade Company, the Cuirass is possibly one of, if not the most durable and protective armor variants currently on the market. On par and occasionally better than most galactic equivalents, the Cuirass has quickly found a fast favorite with the Ganathan military due to its robust design and ease of use.
  • User Friendly - The Cuirass was designed to replace the hodgepodge of antiquated armor types previously in use by the Ganathan military. While durability and modernization were considered key to its design, the Crown determined that simplicity of use was also needed. As such, the armor's core (helmet, torso armor, and upper leg armor) is designed to be donned and removed within moments by a single soldier. The rest of the components can be equipped rapidly as needed. In addition, the Cuirass' internal systems and HUD are made to be simple to use and understand and are programmed to learn and remember their wearer's preferences over time.
  • Modularity - With various branches of the military requiring armor, the decision was made to ensure the Cuirass was viable for all military combat arms. As such, the Cuirass features three variants, each building up from the other: Light (for light infantry, scouts, and those in technical fields), Medium (for the main body of infantry forces), and Heavy (for assault infantry and heavy infantry).
Weaknesses:
  • Chain of Command - While the armor features a great many features and is designed to enhance the effectiveness of the wearing soldier, the armor does have one major drawback. To ensure that proper chain of command is followed, the design of the Cuirass' comm system was purposely weakened for the regular trooper. The commlinks are only designed to function at short ranges, typically standard infantry operational ranges. Comms are routed through the unit to the unit's commanding officer who possesses a more powerful, long range commlink allowing him or her to connect with higher command echelons for proper coordination. This prevents perceived unnecessary chatter on the open commlinks, but can also potentially cripple the unit's ability to communicate should the officer be killed or soldiers move too far away from their commanding officer.
  • Weather Resistant - The second issue with the Cuirass is almost entirely based on the Ganathan lack of exposure to the galaxy's occasional and typical one-biome planets. The armor's undersuit is designed to keep toxins, contaminants, caustic chemicals, and mild radiation from the wearer's body. Unfortunately, the suit only possesses a marginal amount of thermal regulation making the Cuirass weather resistant, not weather proof. This means that the wearer will experience some level of ambient temperature, bringing about the risks of extremely hot or extremely cold environments.
  • Water Resistant - As Ganath has no underwater habitations or any real need, much less experience, with fighting an infantry war underwater, the Cuirass is only water resistant to a certain depth and is not capable of compensating for the difference in pressure caused by increased depth (Note: This is also a problem with deep, deep areas underground). Soldiers using this armor in deep water will not be protected from crushing pressures or cold extremes. In addition, after a certain depth/prolonged exposure to water, the suit will begin to leak, though the undersuit's barrier will still filter out dangerous elements.

Description:

With Ganath's rise out of obscurity into the galaxy and the beginnings of consistent and profitable trade brought about by the Royal Ganathan Trade Company, King Karl XXII ordered the creation of new equipment using modern designs and higher quality, imported materials. Decreeing these new designs and materials be standardized despite the variety of manufacture sources, he demanded the collaboration of multiple groups, companies, and foundries to design and create what he deemed the new age of the Ganathan Military.

The first of these creations was the first standardized suit of armor now issued throughout the Ganathan military. The Cuirass Armor, or Cuirass for short, is a modular and modernized variant of protective-wear borrowing various design element from existing armor types from foreign worlds and galactic nations while maintaining a native Ganathan 'feel' to denote the wearer's origin. The armor is highly durable, on par and occasionally better than equivalent armor used throughout the galaxy, and is robust in design and material. The armor is extremely user friendly and the core components capable of being donned at a moment's notice. The Cuirass' helmet and integrated systems are designed for simplicity and to learn and remember the user's preferences over time, making the tailoring of each suit a basic and unconscious matter for the wearer. Lastly, the armor is highly modular, designed to be used throughout the Ganathan military branches. The armor features three primary configurations, each one based off the previous variant.

The Light variant consists of only the helmet, torso, and upper leg armor components. Intended for scouts, light infantry, and soldiers in technical fields such as medics and technicians, the Light variant trades overall protection for flexibility and ease of movement, allowing users to move without much encumberment or to allow the addition of specialized equipment in modular additions that are currently awaiting production.

The Medium variant of armor consists of the Light variant, but with added vambraces, lower leg armor, and knee and elbow pads. The Medium armor is designed for the common infantryman where a balance between armor protection and flexibility is required. The armor allows some ease of movement, though not nearly as much as the Light variant, as well as increased protection. While the armor has no real space for the same specialized equipment that the Light variant is designed to carry, the Medium armor does sport reinforced areas on the armor where specialized, combat equipment can be mounted in modules currently awaiting production.

The Heavy variant of armor is built on top of the Medium armor. Sporting additional armor components such as armored pauldrons and reinforced gauntlets, the Heavy variant also adds a breastplate overlay. This overlay provides a thin layer of reinforced armor with high-capacity power pack integral to the armor. This power pack holds a high power charge and features a connection port designed to work with either a specialized weapon or specialized combat module, both currently awaiting production. The Heavy armor is primarily intended for use with heavy or assault infantry and their equivalents. Occasionally, they may see use with bodyguard units or units tasked with defending critical locations on or off the battlefield.

The armor does have a few drawbacks, unfortunately. Most of which were brought about by the designers' lack of exposure to the broad galaxy, but some have been intentionally designed. The armor is designed to filter out hostile and damaging elements of the environment such as caustic chemicals, toxins, and even mild radiation. Unfortunately, the armor's integral undersuit is designed with only marginal or mild thermal regulation. While this means that the common soldier won't quite feel the biting chill of the wind during a normal winter or the blazing heat of the sun during a standard summer, in hostile environments (typically found on single-biome planets) the armor falls short. This means that prolonged exposure to extreme heat or extreme cold is a threat to troops in the open over time. In addition, the suit is not designed to compensate for high pressures and as such is not intended for use in deep water (or pressures found deep underground) or prolonged use in water. In fact, prolonged use underwater or in heavy storms/rain will see water leak through the undersuit over time which can easily cause problems for the trooper wearing the armor. Lastly, the commlinks on the standard armor is fairly weak and only features ranges typical of standard infantry operational ranges. This is an intentional fault in the design where the intention is to maintain the chain of command and reduce unneeded chatter from comm communications. Each unit's commanding officer (or in the case of scout units, the team/unit leader) possesses armor sporting a proper long range commlink allowing communication with higher echelons of command. While the deliberate design flaw does indeed reduce chatter and enforce chain of command, it can easily cripple a unit should the officer be killed and long-range communications be lost.
