Fydiel Darraq

Lieutenant Fydiel Darraq
Name: Fydiel Dodonna Dyrraq
Species: Human
Sex: Male
Age: 28
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 155 lbs

Homeworld: Balmorra
Faction: Rebel Alliance
Occupation: Pilot (Rogue Squadron)
Marital Status: Single (Heterosexual)
Force-Sensitive: No

Appearance: Trim and fit, if not particularly muscular, Fydiel is not a particularly memorable figure. Modestly handsome, with a mess of dark hair and a well-kept beard, he has an intense blue gaze but often wears a friendly smile. His voice is a deep baritone, his laugh loud and boisterous but not obnoxious. He dresses in simple, mobile clothing of various dark or earthy shades.

There is a tattoo of red fangs grimacing between his shoulder blades, but few ever see it.

Personality: Friendly and outgoing, quick to laugh and quicker to smile, Fydiel makes buddies easily but has few true friends. He is a good listener, happy to help with someone else's problems or just provide a sympathetic ear, but seldom speaks about himself and quickly becomes uncomfortable if prompted. He has a great many regrets, and he doesn't like to think about them too hard.

In the cockpit, Fydiel becomes truly exuberant; he acts as though half his age, yelling and whooping with each success. At the card table he is more refined, with an excellent Sabaac face that he sometimes allows a sardonic grin to slip through. When the situation calls for professionalism, however, he changes gears immediately and displays quiet discipline and intensity.

Biography: Born to factory workers on Balmorra, Fydiel knew from an early age that wage-slave wasn't the life for him. He loved his parents, and he did what he could to help them, but when he got his chance to get off-world he took it. That chance came in the form of a merit scholarship to the University of Corellia, where Fy spent two years studying nothing in particular and reveling in the freedom of having someone else pay for his expenses. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a poor decision.

Fydiel's continued delaying of actually making a plan ultimately resulted in the revocation of his scholarship; desperate to keep being free, he took out massive loans to stay on Corellia. By the time he graduated with a history degree, he had a pile of debt and no one who wanted to employ him. He finally found a job as a transport pilot for the Corellian Engineering Corporation, ferrying starship components between the planet and orbital facilities, but interest on his loans was outpacing his pay.

His increasingly-illegal creditors began making suggestions, and Fydiel soon fell in with a bad crowd: the Scarlet Grins, a notorious pirate gang. He arranged for them to steal several starships from his employer and made his escape, impressing the shipjackers enough that they invited him to join them. Fy had been a good pilot when he was doing the corporate drudgery he'd promised never to do, but he soon found that he could be a great one doing something else.

Unfortunately, "something else" turned out to be ambushing civilian freighters and cruise liners. Fy did his best to justify it to himself; this was his only way to survive, after all. He focused on the freedom of flying, blocking out the faces of the people he helped to rob and kill. And he got good at it. He was soon indisputably the best pilot among the Scarlet Grins, able to single-handedly take out the escorts of the convoys they ambushed. Having proven himself, he was given command of his own frigate.

Fy loved the Midnight Rose, his first command, but he loved flying more. He planned daring raids of his own, hitting shipyards and mining facilities and making off with goods worth huge piles of credits, and each time he flew as squadron leader. But doubt kept eating at his heart; it was getting harder and harder to block out the faces of those he'd hurt, and it was taking the edge off of his flying. He wanted a cause, something he could feel right about flying for. Eventually, he got his chance.

Fydiel had heard whispers of the Rebel Alliance, just a small group fighting for freedom on the fringes of the galactic superpowers. But he'd never given them much thought until the convoy he and his men were raiding turned out to be a Rebel one. Seizing the chance to turn his life around, Fy opened fire on his own men and defeated the attack he himself had planned, defecting to the Alliance. Although initially mistrusted, he provided excellent intel against pirate targets and was soon welcomed into the Rebellion.

But intel wasn't all he had to offer; now he flies for Rogue Squadron, the best of the best, fighting for freedom.

Strengths and Weaknesses

(+) Hotshot Pilot: Flying is Fydiel's life, his passion, and his greatest skill. He can run circles around snubs in a century-old freighter and make a corvette act like a podracer, but his true love is starfighters. He knows pretty much everything there is to know about fixing, flying, and fighting these smaller craft, and he's never happier than when he's in the cockpit. It takes a Jedi to actually see what opposing pilots are thinking before they act, but Fydiel's long experience with dogfighting usually gives him a pretty good guess.

(+) Card Shark: Fydiel is a mean hand at Sabaac, and picks up other card games quickly and easily. He knows when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em, when to take a minor loss to set up the way for a big payout, and when it's time to leave because he's been winning too much.

(+) Insider Knowledge: Fydiel has spent a lot of time in the galactic underworld, and he has a good memory for how the system works. He knows how to find fences and crime brokers, how to identify ambush spots and drop points, and how to approach crime lords respectfully. He's something of an expert on pirate tactics, having planned no small number of raids himself.

(-) Haunted: Fydiel has done a lot of things he's not proud of; the fact that, in retrospect, they probably weren't necessary only serves to twist the knife. He's friendly and outgoing, but he tends not to talk about himself much or let people get too close. There's a reason he's never had a significant relationship by the age of 28.

(-) Old Enemies: The pirate crew Fydiel used to run with, the Scarlet Grins, isn't happy that he left and took trade secrets with him, let alone sold them out and attacked them. They have a vested interest in seeing him dead, preferably slowly and painfully. Fydiel has to look over his shoulder constantly whenever bounty hunters or pirates and their associates are around.

(-) Not a Warrior: Don't tangle with Fydiel in the sky. On the ground, that's another story. Although he picked up some basic marksmanship and dirty fighting during his time among pirates, Fydiel would struggle to hold his own against one moderately-skilled opponent. Jedi, Sith, bounty hunters, or a stormtrooper squad? Time to haul jets out of there before he gets real crispy.
