Description: Designed by Kuat Drive Yards to support the company’s interests elsewhere, the Foundation-class is more than just a ship; it’s insurance. Upon the bottom of the vessel is a rectangular, prefabricated outpost which can be outfitted for a number of roles: Mining facility, research station, testing facility, medical station, and forward security base. Really the only limitation is what tech can be fitted inside the sixty meter outpost and can run off a solar generator. The outpost does not come equipped with any defenses, but its communications array is installed with standard KDY encryption.
The facility is also more-or-less self-sufficient, with “water” recycling plants, purification filters, and even a section dedicated to food growth operations to support a maximum of twenty-five personnel. More could be stationed within the outpost, but that would require improvisation to ensure resource capacities are pushed to support a greater number of individuals. As well—thanks to a partnership with Andromeda Electronics—specialized droids assist the faculty in day-to-day operations and can even serve as protectors in a limited non-lethal capacity.
To deploy the outpost requires the starship itself, a hundred meter transport whose sole operation is facility deployment. To deploy the facility the vessel must first reach the surface of its destination and identify a suitable landing spot if one wasn’t identified beforehand. Once this mark has been reached, the Foundation-class will descend and deploy the outpost at ground level which also allows personnel to exit the starship and bring the facility to life. Once the captain is alerted that the outpost is online, the ship will depart and return to a larger KDY facility until its next mission. A rather sizable number of these vessels have been produced as the a limited number of these vessels will serve under the Order of the Sacred Lotus as forward medical stations.
Of course the ever present dangers of the galaxy means this civil vessel is adequately protected by military-grade hardware. Laser cannons, torpedo launchers, and anti-ordinance probe launchers help defend the ship from pirates and other would be assailants. Powerful shields, although less so than some other KDY vessels, also layer the starship in a protective shield against kinetic and energetic barrages. There are few drawbacks to the vessel when it comes to its duty, but beyond its duty it offers little use to KDY because of its specialized hull and composition.
