SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Cortosis Weave
  • Lightweight, nimble
  • .3 meters in diameter
  • Easy to carry in off-hand or strapped to belt

Strengths:

  • Cortosis weave provides resistance to lightsabers, allowing the wielder to defend themselves in a duel.
  • Robust, ergonomic design that is easy to use and can take a beating.
  • Lightweight for easy handling.

Weaknesses:

  • Provides no protection from blasters or slugthrowers.
  • Not for prolonged contact. Though the cortosis weave allows the buckler to withstand lightsaber blows, the shield will heat up if contact with blade is sustained.
  • Small size means that it can't be everywhere at once. Requires a great deal of skill to wield effectively.

DESCRIPTION
The buckler was an effective melee item during the era of medieval martial arts. Shields for the most part lost fashionable use with the advent of the firearm. However, with the rise of melee combat and lightsaber dueling, various close quarter battle tools of yore could once again see the light of day, with a few specific tweaks. The main techniques surrounding the buckler are as follows: Hand protection - in which the tool was used to protect the sword hand from sudden attacks. Deflection -curved center and light weight allowed the user to parry strikes from blades, redirecting the energy of a strike. Blinding -a trained defender could use the item to hide the angle of their blade or mask hand position, crucial in keeping his assailant guessing the next strike. Blunt force weapon -the tool could be used to directly punch with either the flat center or to chop with the rim, something very nasty for an unarmoured face. Binding -this tool was small enough to bind wrists and forearms, and with advanced training a defender could grapple with their attacker by wrapping up their limbs and controlling them by pinning or pulling. It’s light and small enough to easily equip to an arm or belt and move with on the field.

This particular buckler is focused on offering a means to disable the opponent's lightsaber and provide an opening to capitalize upon. It is not invincible: repeated saber strikes against the buckler will warp and render its resistant weave useless. It is nigh useless against force attacks, and downright suicide to use as buffer from blaster or projectile fire. Another caveat is that this model is not designed to survive multiple engagements. Finally, it is a defensive tool, and not capable of easily killing an opponent even if used as a cudgel. This item buys time or provides an opening, and the weapon designer would like to remind anyone using this product to remember that it is not to be used like a shield, since it is far too light and small for that.
