EXTERNAL OPERATIONS POD

OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
Intent: To create a series of pods which allow a starfighter to supplement their
capabilities for dedicated mission roles rather than having different variants of the same starfighter
Canon Link: T-65BR X-Wing Reconnaissance Starfighter | 4x-Phantom Short-Range Sensor Jammer
Restricted Missions: Not Applicable
Primary Source: Not Applicable

PRODUCTION INFORMATION
Manufacturer: Alderaan Engineeringhttp://starwarsrp.net/topic/102401-alderaan-engineering/
Model: Mk1
Affiliation: Closed Market
Modularity: Yes
Five Variants
  • Extended Operation
  • Equipment Module
  • Electronic Warfare
  • Sensor/Comm Array
  • Ordnance Pod
Production: Mass
Material:
  • Alusteel
  • Electronics
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Extended Operation: External Fuel Pods are fitted to the wings or under-belly of the starfighter, providing it with much greater operational flight range and time. Many Pilots use the external pods to fly to an engagement then detach them before moving into range.
  • Extra Cargo Space: The equipment module has five hundred kilograms of extra cargo space for systems, weapons, ammunition, sometimes droids or spare parts.
  • Electronic Warfare: An Externally mounted 4x-Phantom Short-Range Sensor Jammer fitted into pods connected to the wings or under-belly of a starfighter, allowing the starfighter to operate as an auxiliary Electronic Warfare craft.
  • Sensor/Comm Array: The pods feature an Advanced Sensor Array with greater range and processing speed and a Long Range Communication Transceiver.
  • Ordnance Pod: Carries either two addition proton torpedoes, three concussion missiles, eight fusion rockets, or sixteen nano-missiles.
Strengths:
  • Extended Operation: Effectively doubles the fuel capacity and consumables aboard a Starfighter allowing it to travel much further without refueling.
  • Equipment Module: Carries an additional 500 Kilograms of equipment in an external pod
  • Electronic Warfare: Enables the fighter to hamper or reduce the targeting and sensor capabilities of an enemy, making it more difficult for them to accurately track a squadron’s movements and locations at greater distances as well as disrupting enemy communications and missiles.
  • Sensor/Communications Array: An Advanced Sensor array designed to increase the range, accuracy, and processing power of a starfighter’s sensor abilities, allowing them to perform the role of a reconnaissance fighter. A Long Range Communications array with an Ion Scramblerhttp://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Ion-scrambler designed to provide encrypted communications from wherever the fighter might be provides the fighter with the ability to reach and communicate with distant ships and planets.
  • Ordnance Pod: Contains additional ordnance for a starfighter, increasing its destructive capabilities by attaching a hardpoint to the craft. [Attaching these moves the Armament up one shift, IE Average would be Moderate]
Weaknesses:
  • Reduced Maneuverability (All): Starfighters fitted with the External Operations Pods suffer from decreased Maneuverability, pilots noting sluggish reactions and wider turn radii than normal. [Normally one shift lower rating, IE Average would be Low with ExO Pods attached]
  • Increased Sensor Signature (All): With Pods attached, a starfighter is much easier to detect by sensor arrays.
  • One Module (All): The average starfighter only has space for a single module or pod at a time, which while providing additional options does force a squadron to choose carefully. One fighter with extra fuel isn’t normally very useful.
  • Sensor Tethers (Sensor/Comm Array Only): While the Sensor Array is released and operational, the starfighter must remain stationary or risk jumbling the tethers and damaging the system or craft.
  • External Magazine (Ordnance Pod Only): The Ordnance pod can explode if struck by enemy fire since there is no armor to defend it on the exterior of the craft.
DESCRIPTION
External Operations Pods are an aftermarket Starfighter modification designed by Alderaan Engineering to increase the flexibility and versatility of already existing starfighters without requiring them to undergo expensive modification which is not easily exchanged for different mission profiles. The Five existing variants: Extended Operation, Electronic Warfare, and Sensor/Comm Array.

The Extended Operation module consists of one or two tanks attached to the belly or under the wings of a starfighter consisting of additional fuel tanks, intended to increase the range of any given starfighter, allowing them to travel for twice as much flight time as they would otherwise be capable of.

The Equipment Module is little more than an external cargo container capable of carrying five hundred kilograms of equipment such as ammunition, repair kits, parts, or anything else the pilot or squadron deems necessary.

An Electronic Warfare pod contains a 4x-Phantom Short-Range Sensor Jammer intended to allow the fighter its attached to to hamper and harass enemy sensors and targetting computers making it more difficult for a targeted ship to communicate, attain weapons locks, or track objects through space. It’s not 100% effective, but it does make it more difficult, and in combat every second counts.

The Sensor/Communication array consists of the same advanced sensor array found on the T-65BR and Long Range Communications systems. The high-gain, long-range sensor package makes the craft a more reliable detector. The six sensor probes are released on tethers, and take time to recollect, rendering the vessel basically stationary while its sensor system is in use. The long range, high-powered communication array allows the ship to cut through interference and communicate across much greater distances than normal.

Finally the Ordnance Pod is a simple one metric ton ordnance bay mounted on the outside of the vessel. It can contain two proton torpedoes, three concussion missiles, eight fusion rockets, or sixteen nan-missiles in a pod. This allows an A-wing to deliver a stronger punch, or a U-Wing to provide more effective close air-support and can allow any craft to attempt to fill the role of a light bomber. However, the external magazine comes with the risk of sympathetic detonation if the shields are pierced and the magazine punctured.

External Operations Pods are attached and can be detached with the same procedure as dumping spare parts containers, detaching from a mooring clamp, etc by the craft, normally taking a handful of seconds to do so.

I will be taking over this submission as this has been sitting since December 23rd.

I would prefer to see these two weaknesses reversed. An increase in armament rating should correlate to a decrease in a similar rating in this case.

Oh, my mistake. The weakness for maneuverability is for ALL variants as is the Increased Sensor signature and Single type weaknesses. Then the External Magazine only applies to the Ordnance as its the only one with explosives, and the Tethers only applies to the Sensor/Comm variant.

Let me edit that a tad to make it a little clearer.

As a note, I'm hoping these will be "After-Market" in that I can bolt these onto whatever starfighter and go from there, and I want to make that clear just in case there was any doubt.
