SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Hybrid Propulsion: The key feature of the Emanation Engine's design is that of its actual propulsion system, taking inspiration from the widely used Ion Engines and those that use fuel such as J-Type Engines and essentially combining the two to make a hybrid system. Emanation Engines run on both power like a typical ion engine but also utilize fuel in the form of blaster gases such as Orveth. Within the engine system the gas is ionized, not at all dissimilar to how blaster gases are energized, in the fusion reactors which creates a stream of particles which are then shot out of the engine exhausts to propel them. This additional propellant gives the Emanation Engines far more thrust and speed than most ion and regular propellant engines of similar sizes and inputs, making them more cost effective as a result.
STRENGTHS
  • Variable Thrust: The amount of gas ionized at any given time can be modulated and adjusted as is needed, which of course effects the overall propulsion and speed they provide. Unlike normal engines which can only be modulated via power or fuel however, the Emanation Engines can be modulated by both and thus can either use more fuel or more power depending on the needs of the vessel in question which can help mitigate either smaller fuel capacity or limited power input. This comes with the additional benefit of giving the Emanations an inherent ability to rapidly boost their propulsion output, much like how a SubLight Acceleration Motor does.
WEAKNESSES
  • Volatile Fuel: Given that the fuel of the engines are typically the same as those used in blaster gas, they are understandably rather volatile and prone to exploding if they come into contact with blaster bolts or other sources of high heat such as overheating components or fires. This makes the actual containers of this fuel natural hazards when under fire or extreme conditions and thus unfortunately results in a key weakness of the design that other engine systems such as ion do not possess.
DESCRIPTION
The Order of Wonosa had long since been simply making usage of whatever they had on hand when it came to ship building. By and large these would be Ion Engines and their similar variants, the lack of dedicated fuel simplifying logistics and the sheer commonality of these types making them far easier to purchase and salvage made these the most ideal after all. Even when they began having their own manufacturing capabilities and with the front of Sanguine Defense Works giving them far more options and access to new markets, ion engines were still their preferred systems due to their existing designs already having been made with them in mind.

However the research and development teams found themselves increasingly frustrated by the limitations that such engine systems imposed. Ion Engines naturally only produce as much propulsion as their power sources can provide them and their own components can handle, which became an insistent frustration as the limited resources at their disposal had to be put into continually expanding the power sources to properly propel their vessels. Using propellant engines was a potential idea however much like with the ion engines the limitations of resources meant that their fuel tanks would have to be more compact and rarely full and thus would never have enough capacity to produce the desired propulsion either.

The idea of combining ion and propellant engines into a hybridized system was initially a simple jest among the technicians at one of the meetings regarding their development projects, however while the idea was at first dismissed it would be later entertained and have proper investment. With a hybridized system the two largest difficulties regarding ion and propellant engines, the need for power and the need for fuel respectively, could be mitigated in favor of utilizing both with the resulting propulsion being far greater than either method would be separately. Relative to the size of the engine system at least of course.

The Emanation Engines would be developed on this principle of utilizing the strengths of both systems to allow for more compact, and thus cheaper and more easily produced, engines that were just as effective as their counterparts would be at similar sizes. A method of making the most use of limited resources and space to maximize their performance. This did of course come with some drawbacks such as needing to fuel these engines at all, however the usage of gases which were already being sourced for blaster gas manufacturing by Sanguine Defense Works allowed for the issue of fueling to logistics to essentially be included alongside the vessel in question's existing need for blaster ammunition.
