Private Echoes of Steel

The stars vanished in fire.

Sera was half‑curled in the pilot's seat with one boot on the console, rereading old routes while hyperspace hummed around her, right up until every alarm in the cockpit detonated at once. Sparks burst from the overhead panels as the ship lurched violently sideways, and something slammed into the hull with enough force to rip them out of hyperspace in a spinning blur of stars and blue light.

A storm‑shrouded planet filled the viewport before she could breathe. Dark clouds churned like a living thing, lightning crawling across black oceans and fractured landmasses far below, and the sickening drop in her stomach told her they were far too low.

"Oh, you have got to be kidding…"

Another explosion tore through the rear of the ship, and the stabilizers died. The transport dropped in a violent tilt, and Sera seized the controls, fighting the spin as sirens merged into a single mechanical howl and smoke poured from the instrument panel. The hull shrieked as they punched into the upper atmosphere, rain and heat hammering the plating with the force of artillery fire.

For a moment, she managed to steady the descent, but the right thruster blew apart in a bloom of orange light, and the ship spun again, swallowed by cloud so thick it erased the world outside. Cargo restraints snapped loose behind her, and the controls went weightless beneath her hands, the unmistakable sensation of a vessel no longer falling under her command but simply falling.

Fear hit hard, but training hit harder. She closed her eyes for a heartbeat and reached for the Force, not with discipline but with raw refusal to die. Power surged through her, enough to hold the transport together for a few more seconds, but not enough to save it.

They burst through the clouds, trailing flame, revealing a world that looked like the corpse of a battlefield. Skeletal wrecks rose from black swamps, rusted towers leaned through the storm, and distant red warning lights blinked like dying embers struggling to stay alive.

Then she saw the mountain ahead, far too close for any hope of avoiding it.

"No no no…"

The left wing clipped a stone, and the ship tore apart. Metal screamed as the transport cartwheeled through trees and shattered ruins, each impact a blur of fire, mud, and crushing force, until the nose finally plowed into flooded earth and skidded to a halt in a spray of debris.

Rain hammered twisted metal while thunder rolled overhead and fires hissed as they died. Sera hung in the restraints with blood sliding down her cheek and smoke drifting through the fractured cockpit, every part of her body aching, her ears ringing, her shoulder throbbing with each breath.

"I am never flying alone again."

The harness released with a click that nearly dropped her onto the ruined console before she caught herself with a sharp hiss of pain. Emergency lights flickered weakly and rain leaked through fractured seams in the hull.

Outside, the graveyard world stretched in every direction, dark forests swaying beneath the storm, half‑submerged wreckage looming like the bones of dead giants, and distant sirens echoing through the night as though the planet was still trying to continue a war long after its soldiers were gone.

Then, somewhere beyond the crash site, a single metallic sound cut through the rain. Heavy and deliberate, it carried across the wreckage with a clarity that left no room for doubt.

A footstep.

This world was an empty one. A good rest spot, a camp out. An outpost. For the Assassin, it was incredibly important to have places unknown to relax and rebuild. In one of the numerous wreckages she had one of her bases, idly repairing her cybernetics as best she could on her own. The droid she'd taken to contribute only knew so much, if only to keep her enhancements secret as can be. Paranoia kept her from being completely taken care of.

A proximity alarm blared.

She blinked, glancing up to a nearby screen before she pulled one of the droid's tools from her chest. It closed as she wormed her way to her feet, crawling along with metallic digits dragging her in haste. She wasn't found, was she? The screen showed what had triggered it. A ship, midcrash. Ah. She wasn't found, but someone had crashed on theri own here.

Perhaps it was just that much, anyway.

Ziso moved. Gathered her cloak that clung unnaturally to her cybernetics, shrouding her in an unnatural darkness that made it difficult to tell just what her shape was. How large, how wide, if she was humanoid or not. Powerful minds could sift through it, but if they did, well. Ziso would be able to tell they were a threat from that alone.

She stalked through the old remnants, making her way to the still smoldering ship. She didn't hide or slow, it wasn't something she thought someone could survive. She'd take what remained for herself. At least until she noticed someone was moving. Someone was alive. Her eyes narrowed as she remained in her short, huddled form and just stared.

Studied. She'd figure if this was a threat or not.

The storm swallowed nearly everything beyond the wreck, rain hammering against twisted hull plating in sheets that drowned out all other sound while smoke drifted upward from the ruined transport in thick black ribbons that vanished into the dark sky. One engine still crackled behind the fractured fuselage, its intermittent glow throwing brief flashes of orange across the mud and scattered debris.

Sera pulled herself free of the wreckage with one hand pressed to her injured shoulder and the other braced against metal still hot from atmospheric burn. Pain followed every movement, her ears ringing so hard the world felt distant and blurred at the edges, yet adrenaline kept her upright even as exhaustion tugged at her legs.

The Force felt strange here, heavy and saturated, as if the planet had absorbed too much suffering over too many years and never released any of it.

She steadied her breathing and stepped away from the transport, boots splashing through shallow black water while lightning revealed the wasteland in brief silver flashes. Enormous wrecks rose through the rain like dead giants half claimed by the swamp, and rusted towers leaned together in the distance, their shapes barely visible through the storm.

Then she felt it, not through sight but through instinct. Someone else was here.

She stopped, the sensation running down her spine with enough clarity to cut through the haze in her thoughts, and only then did she realize how exposed she was beside the burning transport. Slowly, she turned toward the ruins beyond the crash site, seeing nothing at first but rain and shadow.

Lightning split the sky.

For an instant, it revealed a figure standing motionless among the wreckage, large and indistinct, its outline swallowed by an unnatural darkness. It was not wildlife or scavenger. Something in the shape felt wrong in a way she could not name, more like an absence wearing the suggestion of a body, as if the storm itself had learned how to stand upright.

Fear tightened in her chest, not as panic but as sharpened awareness.

Her hand drifted toward the lightsaber at her belt, though she stopped short of drawing it. The figure had not moved or attacked, and igniting a weapon seemed the quickest way to turn uncertainty into violence.

Rain slid down her face as she studied the distant shape. Her voice carried through the storm with surprising steadiness despite the exhaustion beneath it.

"You know, most people wait until after someone crawls out of a crash before staring at them like they're deciding whether or not to eat them."

Humor came easier than fear, and it kept her breathing even. She did not look away. And she did not miss the fact that whatever stood out there had approached silently enough that she never heard it coming.

"Perhaps."

A blunt, hollow response was all the cyborg gave. Emotionless white plasteel stared, flashing with each bolt of lightning. She slid down from the scrap she was clinging to, claws tearing in the process to keep her balanced. To fill the silence with the unsettling sound of metal tearing. This woman wasn't a threat, yet. A broken body that had survived a crash.

The weakness of flesh made manifest.

"Why are you here."

Sera blinked.

Of all the questions she had expected, that one had not been particularly high on the list.

Rain dripped from damp copper curls as she glanced briefly toward the smoking remains of her transport and then back toward the strange figure standing among the wreckage.

"Well, something hit my ship in space." Her tone carried a faint note of dry disbelief, as though the answer should have been fairly obvious given the burning crater behind her. "I crashed."

After a beat, she tilted her head slightly. "Not here, specifically. Wherever here is." The admission came easily enough. She had absolutely no idea where she was. "That part definitely wasn't on purpose."

Her hand slipped away from her lightsaber and settled instead against her injured shoulder. The movement drew a slight wince before she straightened again.

"What about you?" Her gaze drifted briefly over the torn metal and claw marks left behind by the other's descent. "You seem a little more established."
