Intent: The Echani were, in the old republic, experts with shields. Their shields helped them make up for their light armor and I liked the sort of special operations feel to it. So I figured what the heck.

Description:
The Mk2 Combat Shield is an Echani personal energy shield developed for elite units. The unit itself is capable of fitting into slots in armor, or belt units, but is favored in its gauntlet form. The Echani pride themselves on using fast lightning attacks unencumbered by armor, and so the personal shield was developed to increase their survivability.
When developing the Mk2 Combat Shield the Echani had many difficulties. Personal Shields were long thought to be a thing of the past. As blaster technology increased the power needed to sustain a strong enough shield to defend against them. Unfortunately this also produced an electromagnetic field and large amounts of radiation which proved hazardous to organic life.
The Echani began with a weaker system designed to merely block kinetic forces, such shields had been around forever and the relative stagnation in slug throwers compared to blasters made it fairly easy to accomplish. After the Mk1 Dueling shield was created they began work on a more militarized design. Instead of trying to solve the century old problem of shields giving off radiation the company opted instead for a method of pulsation. A minor, low powered shield always running would allow for kinetic protection from many battlefield hazards and also act as a detector for the main shield. When a blaster bolt penetrated the primary shield a detection system would kick on and pulse the main energy shield to absorb the blast, without constantly being on the high powered shield did not produce enough radiation to harm most organics. This pulse has the added benefit of saving power in the unit.
Although a very successful product, the Mk2 Combat Shield wasn’t without faults. Pulses were slow and dealt poorly with rapid a succession of hits. In addition power was finite and after around half a dozen pulses, more or less depending on how powerful the blasts, the unit would require around one minute for the pulse generator to recharge.
Overall however the Echani Mk2 Combat Shield proved its worth and was put into use within Elite Echani units.
