Eating in the Corner

Hasjo didn't have many friends, and entering the vast dome that was the cafeteria for the Ossus Jedi Academy, he was instantly overwhelmed. There were so many humans, though from various planets and systems, he still felt threatened. It was a natural instinct for creatures to feel threatened by other creatures, and such instincts were hard to ignore when such immense numbers were before you. It was a natural survival mechanism that creatures felt that way. Shortly after they would decide whether or fight or flee. And finding few social groups that seemed welcoming of him, he decided his best option was to flee, rather than fight his way into a social group that may not accept him.
He brought his tray of stew towards a far corner where a table remained untouched. He gave a quick glance around the room. Many dozens of Padawans were already growing into clicks, as some people called it. A group of people that tended not to socialise outside their group. He set his tray down and flopped his legs over the bench, seating himself. He sat there, alone. One of the few handful of 'alien' species that were located in the room. Well, alien by the standard of the racial majority here. If only he had someone of his race here to enjoy company with. Heck, any race but human would be nice right now. Brighten up his day.

It was common, very common, for Carona to avoid groups of people like this. Several humans with one or two aliens per "click" who all eyed her weirdly. It was true that she looked way younger than what she actually was. Combine common age misconceptions with the fact that she was mute and you had a togruta girl who commonly was "alienated" out and sometimes even bullied by the outside crowds. It was Carona's best and sometimes only defense to hopelessly avoid even eye contact with people in the mess hall, she was trying her best just to get to her corner of the room where she commonly ate... and to get away from all of those eyes.

... But this wasn't her lucky day. Somewhere close to her lonely, little corner, she was abruptly stopped by a click of three fellow padawans. There were two humans, one a girl and another a boy, and the third was a Kel Dor male. Carona blinked at them then tried to swerve around them, but the Kel Dor tackled her and threw the weak togruta onto the floor in front of them.

In a rare moment, Carona blinked up at them with a defensive look. It was one that told the older, stronger looking trio to bug somebody their own size. But that cross glare apparently had just made things even worse for the young apprentice as the girl spit down at her. "Oh look," she scowled, "a weakling."

Carona threw a silent thought at them which showed how today was probably the wrong day to mess with her. However, given the fact that she didn't have Force telepathy down yet, she was completely unable to freely communicate at her own free will. The best she could try to do was to try and get up again, but the human male pushed her back down again. Carona sighed, wondering if they even had something better to do, and closed her eyes.

She had given up. She prepared for a beating...

He was half-way through his meal when he heard the familiar crash of falling chairs, clattering plates and bowls and the thud of meat on a solid floor. He snapped his neck to see the three bullies pounce on a relatively young looked female. She didn't seem to be resisting either. They teased her, spat on her, and Hasjo had already had enough. He was older than a lot of padawans here, but was not by far the oldest. He stood up in the traditional Jedi customary cloak. He shrugged them off his shoulders to reveal the plain brown of his robes. To say he was disappointed would be an understatement. He could feel the pump of his legs against the floor. The gentle padding of his leather boots. His black, beady eyes following the three harassers. He may not be proficient in the force, but he sure was strong.
He calmed his mind, not wanting to throw an outburst of anger on these three troublesome students. He held no ideals that women were inferior, and treated them as men. He grabbed the female by the cuff of her tunic, and the Kel-Dor by the cuff of his. With a grunt of exertion, he quite literally lifted them up off the ground. His green skin rippled with taut muscles as he held them in their elevated position. They struggled and squirming, throwing off a childish tirade of insults and threats. "Bullying is a trait of the Dark Side. You'll want to learn that quick-smart before you're thrown out of this academy" he spoke with a deadly calm. Not a hint of anger or malice. He had kept himself calm and collected. Such strong, hateful emotions were a troubling path for those that walk them. He had set it aside. He released the two, glaring upon them to see whether they would fight or flee.

Well... this was surprising... Carona was not used to another padawan walking in and defending her. Yes, very surprising. She blinked as after the padawan set them down, the three bullies ran away. She looked around to see all eyes on the two padawans left from the fight. Carona anxiously pulled her knees up and wrapped her arms around them, this was kind of embarrassing...

Carona had a good black-and-blue mark on one of her cheeks. She also felt some other good bruises on her right arm and other ones across the rest of her body. She looked down at her tray of food which was now scattered across the floor. She sighed and attempted to act like nothing happened. She got up, brushed some food off of her pants, and started over to get another plate. - However, before leaving she turned to the helpful padawan and smiled. She nodded her thanks then raced over to where she would be getting more of that hearty, meaty soup.

Hasjo knelt beside her for a moment, collecting the remnants of her food. His eyes downcast as he spoke "You may eat with me if you wish." He picked up the plate and resigned to a bin, tossing it away as he watched [member="Carona Totsari"] retreating form locating the canteen. He shook his head in disappointment of the other padawans. It seemed insane to have such imbecile people in a Jedi Academy. He found himself lurking back to the table in the corner. He could feel the eyes watching him.

At first, Carona was just planning on eating on her own again. However, while and after she got her second plate of food, @[member="Hasjo Hallu"] 's offer kept on shaking up her head. She sighed at herself, feeling q bit guilty about how she treated him, and walked over to the table he was at - with no trouble along way!

She placed her food on the edge of the table, then ticked her finger onto the table, notifying him of her existence, and she nervously smiled.

Hasjo glanced to [member="Carona Totsari"]. His plate held a Nautolan delicacy. It looked like a squid and smelt absolutely foul. Only the Nautolans didn't notice the horrid stench that wafted through the air from the meal. The tentacles were crisp and curled. He placed one in his mouth and began to chew. A liquid audibly was squashed out from the flesh. It was a juicy yet crisp meal. He swallowed it and spoke to her "I'm sorry about what happened to you. What is your name? I am Hasjo Hallu."

Carona rolled her eyes, now was the time to explain she was mute! She sat down, she pulled out a data pad and quickly typed on it. She then slid it towards @[member="Hasjo Hallu"] and took a bite of the meatiest object on her tray.

The note said:

"Sorry about having to type this. I'm mute. My names Carona."

"Sorry about having to type this. I'm mute. My names Carona."
"You have no reason to be sorry, Carona. I'm sorry that you're mute. It must be hard sometimes." He raised a tentacle in her direction, gesturing towards her "But I sense you're a great person." He ate the tentacle, squished the liquid out of the squid-like creature, chewed and swallowed. He spoke once more "So, if you don't mind me asking. Why did you choose to become a Jedi?"

Carona smiled nervously at the older Padawan, he seemed as old as her master. Being the type of person to give into power, Carona felt slightly under control from this Jedi - who didn't even mean any harm.

She pulled her data pad back and typed on it again to answer his question. She finished typing then slid it back to him:

"I want to be a Jedi so I can help and save people from despair and hardship. I want to rescue people the paths of loneliness and pain - I don't want anybody to be forgotten because so many people out there are. And that's the birth of the exact evil that they were oppressed by. It'd a cycle. One that needs to be stopped. If I ever have the strength to, I want to stop it if no one else does."
Carona slid to data pad back to @[member="Hasjo Hallu"] thinking Wow... I just let a lot out there... I'm stupid.

"That's quite the mouthful" he said with a smirk as he read the data pad. "But they're honest words, and noble" he passed the data pad back "And you can be re-assured that I will help you end this cycle. Wherever possible. It is the way of the Jedi." He cleaned his plate of food and glanced to her own. "Will you be eating that?" he then hiked a thumb over his shoulder "I have training I have to attend to with Master Ru in a few minutes. Afterwards I'm free to train with you if you wish some practice with the lightsaber"

Carona smiled nervously at the nautolan and then gave him a small smile at his compliment. She tapped at her data pad then slid it to @[member="Hasjo Hallu"].

"Do you know Jar'Kai, Soresu, or Ataru?"

"Do you know Jar'Kai, Soresu, or Ataru?"
He read the words from the data pad and glanced up, reply "Ataru and Djem So are my focus. I can help you with a little Ataru, we can learn from each other"

Carona smiled at @[member="Hasjo Hallu"] and smiled a bigger smile, Ataru was the style she needed to learn the most. She typed that into her notepad and handed it back to him

Carona shyly smiled and nodded, getting up to let @[member="Hasjo Hallu"] out of his seat and sitting down across from the former. She began eating another meaty object on her plate as she watched for him to go to his training - a Jedi should never be late!
