Strengths:

Size: The E-SM’s small size means that it can fit into nooks and crannies on starships and even land vehicles to reach and repair damaged areas that most larger astromechs and maintenance droids can’t reach. In addition several can be put on a single starship, negating the need for an astromech altogether as multiple spider droids can be deployed to fix any problem rapidly in a combat situation.

Versatility: With a wide range of on-board tools the droid can fix almost any damage or issue on a variety of ships and vehicles. In addition, thanks to its heat-resistant quadanium body, and with an internal cooling system it can resist significant amounts of both internal and external heat, allowing it to engage repairs in even the hottest environments such as desert planets and engine blocks.

Weaknesses:

Fragile: Because of its size and need for mobility the E-SM lacks any true armor, meaning it can be easily destroyed by anything from blaster bolts to space debris and small asteroids/meteors to a trooper’s boot stomping on it.

Armament: Unlike most astromechs and repair droids the E-SM lacks any sort of true weaponry to defend itself when attacked, forcing it to resort to using its on-board tools to limited effect.

DESCRIPTION

The E-SM Mechanic Spider Droid is the result of research specified to create an affordable yet size non-intensive repair and maintenance droid with a wide range of potential damage coverage. Despite lacking offensive weaponry like most droids, it possesses a variety of tools and magnetized legs to allow it the ability to move along the exterior of vehicles in motion safely, whether they be land-based vehicles or starfighters. Its size is a double-edged sword, as while it can fit in spaces that most larger droids would be unable to fit into, but this leaves it without much armor, and therefore fragile. While it doesn’t carry the same versatility as a standard astromech would, the E-SM is an excellent option for ships without the space for one, and repairs can be done much faster with several of the spider droids active than with a single astromech.

In addition, the spider droid’s self-destruct mechanism can be weaponized, with a crafty user only needing to come up with their own delivery system to get the droids onto an enemy vehicle or starship. Its small size can be taken advantage of to keep out of sight and position it near critical systems before detonating. Of course it can still be picked up by enemy power scanners or by visual spotting.
