Building more and more powerful weapons was a part of warfare, and one of the most important parts it was true, but it was only part of the story. For every weapon that you create, for every attack, there was a defence, and it was that element of war that Locke and Key Mechanics looked at with the Duban Shield System.
To create the shield the companies engineers went back to look at the shielding technologies that already existed in the galaxy. At its core, all shields were energy fields that could block or otherwise deflect attacks directed against them. This generally took the form of a forcefield covering the ship or station they were built into. However, the ships and stations weren’t the only vessels that travelled through the ocean of the stars. Before any sentient had made their way to the stars they travelled through space on those natural ships known as planets. And like any other space ship, the planets had to have something that would protect them from the energies tearing through space. This is the magnetosphere,
It was from this natural shield that the engineers at Locke and Key Mechanics drew inspiration for their newest shielding system. It has long been known that it is possible to bounce radio waves off the magnetosphere, the magnetic field that also protects the planet from solar flares and the plasma expelled by the sun.
The Duban shield system was designed to utilise these magnetic fields in order to protect the ship or station from attack. Instead of a forcefield, the emitters project a powerful magnetic field around the protected vessel. This magnetic field can exert a repulsive force on any charged field or electromagnetic force attacking it. In particular, this field would have an effect on any plasma or kinetic rounds which are targeted at it. The field can also disrupt charge particle or attacks involving magnetic fields themselves.
