Drone Droid Interceptor

Image Source: Here. Scarab class droid fighters.
Affiliation: Archangel Research & Design or closed market.
Manufacturer: Archangel
Model: 00001100
Modularity: None
Production: Mass
Material: Standard materials
Classification: Interceptor
Length: 10 metres
Height: 3 metres
Width: 3 metres (folded) 6 metres (unfolded)

Armament:
  • 2 x laser cannons
  • 2 x warhead launchers (2 warheads each)

Squadron Count: 24. The ship’s small size, folding ability and cheapness allows it to be mass produced and formed into large squadrons.

Special Features:
  • Droid piloted

Maneuverability Rating: 1
Speed Rating: 2
Hyperdrive Class: N/A

Strengths:
  • The Swarm. Unlike organic pilots who must be trained and given such silly things like space and air, the droid controlling this needs none of that. These can be produced in mass amounts for far cheaper than fighters requiring organic pilots.
  • Impossible Agility. Without needing to cater for an organic’s physical limitations, the Drone can perform impossible manoeuvres which would make even a Jedi wince.
  • Folding Design. The Drone can ‘fold’ into a rectangular shape for easy storage. It can even be hung up from docking bay racks like some form of infernal bat for efficient use of space.
Weaknesses:
  • No Shields. There is of course drawbacks for a light, fast fighter, namely protection. The Drone has no shields and minimal armour. One decent hit can destroy it.
  • No Hyperdrive. Likewise, the Drone relies entirely on being carried to the battlefield and then deployed. It has no way of leaving the system otherwise.
  • Droid Limitations. Of course all machines are superior to organic filth but…cheap droids don’t get the best in processor technology. This leads to somewhat predictable attack patterns. As always, ion weapons also are lethally effective against droids.

Description:
Designed to replace Archangel’s aging Baktoid fighters, the Drone was made to be cheap, fast and agile. As a consequence, the Drone ended up being one of the fastest and most agile ships in the galaxy, but much had to be sacrified. Shields, hyperdrive and armour all were removed or cut down to lessen weight and provide the modular folding required to cram as many into a hanger bay as possible.

Piloted by a standard droid brain, the craft was perfect for intercepting slower bombers, and for executing movements no organic could handle. The intelligence of the droid in charge was somewhat limited, but it was not dependant on a link back to its command broadcaster. In combat the huge squadrons would typically divide into fours and attempt to flank and overwhelm enemy with numbers. With no concept of organic self-preservation, the Drones will gladly sacrifice themselves so another one might avenge it.

As the design is so simple and there are no expensive organic requirements like life-support, the Drone can be made quickly and cheaply. For a fraction of the cost of a regular fighter, and in a fraction of the time needed to train an organic pilot, a perfectly capable unit can be produced. Whilst it will not trouble fighter aces and Force using pilots, the Drone can swarm and stick enemies until by sheer numbers it is overcome. In the end, after all, Archangel will process all organics, even if it takes a trillion droid casualties to do so.
Development Thread: Tested: http://starwarsrp.net/topic/63877-technical-demonstration/
Intent: To create the ultimate in mass, expendable droid fighters. This fighter is crazy fast and agile, and can be stored on a rack like clothes. However, it has no hyperdrive, limited weapons and no shields. Its main task is to swarm the enemy, using its speed and agility and droid piloting skills to stay out of enemy. This is hardly an elite force, but they are cheap and replaceable.
Who Can Use This: Archangel. Buyers on open market.
