Lucas' decision to never re-release the unaltered originals was always one of the most contradictory and baffling things he's ever (not) done, and thus the most telling about his character. On the one hand we all know that George is not in the least bit ashamed of crass consumerism, judging by the way he would slap a Star Wars label on just about anything that would make a quick dollar. This even extended to multiple re-releases of the movies with minor edits or special features over the years. And yet this move, which was probably one of the most sought after by fans and thus the move that would have made him the most money, he always refused to do.
