Strengths:

  • Improved Firepower: The Defender sports a slightly larger amount of firepower than normal for a cruiser.

  • Improved Defenses: The Defender is built with the latest biomemetic technology of Lucerne Labs, including Chimera Composite armor and the Ossis starship frame, which provides the ship with a minor edge in durability compared with many of its competitors.
Weaknesses:

  • Low Maneuverability: The Defender's use of the Ossis-class starship frame makes the craft somewhat more sluggish than its contemporaries.
Description: The Defender was designed as a general purpose warship, capable of being thrust into a variety of situations with reasonable effectiveness. To this end, most of the design's features are unremarkable, though it has slightly improved firepower and defenses at the cost of lower maneuverability. A wide variety of weapons ensure that the Defender can engage any target at almost any range, though it does not particularly excel against any one target. This versatility often sees Defenders deployed as patrol ships, where they can easily adapt to the situations as they are encountered.

Technical Explanations:

Crew & Automation: The Defender runs on a two section crew that extensively uses the ship's Calor Series BioComputers connected by Lucerne Labs Biolux series Organoform circuitry to automate as many of the ship's basic functions as possible for non-combat, day to day operations. This usually results in each watch overseeing these processes from their stations, and moving to trouble shoot problems as they arise. When battle is eminent, both sections come onto duty simultaneously, taking over any previously automated tasks. This leaves a small pool of crewmen that can supplement certain department's manpower as needed. All of this activity is directed from a CIC-style bridge buried near the center of the ship. The ship also a cramped auxiliary bridge located at the tip of the vessel's bow, which unlike the main bridge, has viewports that look out into space. Defenders are also notable in that they have they have a morale, welfare, and resource section located just above the hangar placed between the two engine blocks. Multiple layers of ceraglass offer an expansive star vista while sailors and soldiers work out, play sports, eat, and drink in this multi-level multipurpose space which makes long deployments much more bearable.

Engine Systems: The Defender uses twin banks of Nimble-5 Ion Engines, which temporarily allow the cruiser to "boost". This is typically used to close gaps in formations or to avoid collisions, as the temporary nature of the boost rarely aids in pursuing ships. The Defender sports an otherwise typical hyperdrive, maneuvering thrusters, and repulsorlifts typically found on a vessel its size.

Shielding systems: The Defender is protected by lackluster deflector shield generator systems, granting it both the ray and particle shielding required for basic space travel and combat. The ship's shielding is strictly average, and most of the ship's defensive improvements are a result of its hull instead.

Hull: The Defender was designed from the ground up with the Ossis series starship framework, making it exceptionally durable and resilient to variety of potential dangers. This sturdy framework is then covered in criss-crossing layers of moderately thick Chimera Composite armor that are separated by thin sheets of condensed matter composite. This results in a ship that is only slightly above average in its durability. The rear morale, welfare, and resource section is the exception to this rule, but automatic shutters quickly move Chimera-Composite plates over the exposed panes of ceraglass.

Weapon Systems: The Defender carries a wide variety of weapons to enable its role as a general purpose warship. Approximately two-thirds of weapons are mounted on the wedge-shaped bow of the vessel in a manner similar to larger star destroyers, giving the Defender excellent forward and flank fire arcs. Perhaps the most salient of these are a pair of individually turreted Trident Autocannons mounted in tandem on the ventral side of the ship. Among these massive guns are fire-linked batteries of turbolasers and mass driver cannons which provide most of the ship's firepower. A sextet of large, general purpose warhead launchers on the port and starboard sides along with scattered plasma energy torpedo launchers provide supplementary firepower to the Defender's guns. A single Erebus-class Jamming Array is located Just forward of the ship's midpoint on either side of the ship: this allows the Defender the ability to conduct limited electronic warfare against an opponent from any angle. Lastly, a wide variety of point-defense weapons are placed equidistantly across the vessel's hull, often with overlapping fire arcs, in order to protect it form starfighters, warheads, and other small threats.

Carrying Capacity: The Defender has a small stern hangar that opens up between the twin engine blocks. This hangar typically is host to a single squadron of starfighters, usually interceptors for patrol duty, and a pair of shuttles or light transports for general logistical work. This hangar is usually protected by a pair of thick blast doors made out of Chimera composite. In terms of passengers and cargo, the Defender carries up to an old Imperial Battalion worth of men and their equipment, much like the older Strike-class Medium Cruiser. Exact passenger and cargo loadouts vary from mission to mission and user to user: some Defenders, especially in Directorate service, carry fewer troops in order to carry more supplies for long-range missions on the outskirts of known space.
