Discovered by [member="Orihime Ike"] and [member="Sorel Crieff"] then crystal cannon is an ancient design that has been revitalized and improved upon. The pair discovered the cannon after finding a holocron on Jakku in a crashed ship, the ship led them through the galaxy to a world on the outer rim where they found an installation used by the jedi to help develop equipment and weapons in ancient times.
Working with each other the two of them managed to get into the facility and discover the different pieces. Finding some of the ideas for designs of the Chu-Gon Dar cube and early prototypes of it. Orihime looking at it as her mother had the remaining cube in her possession. Other equipment that was being designed by the jedi in ancient times as a means to augment their own technology. There was more exploration and discovery for what they might be able to do.
The designs of the cube itself featured little in making the cannon, it was just another thing found within the facility itself along with terraforming torpedo's for working to bring worlds back to life or to life. Force sensitivity scanners. Seeing some of the thoughts that the jedi were making and comparing it to what her mother and Sasori was making. This cannon was a larger version of the equipment they already made.
The cannon the pair discovered came with notes attached to it, talking about ancient weapons and designs that were far stronger then most things in the galaxy and how the larger crystals could be used to power weapons. One of which was the cannon, a light defensive turbolaser that could be mounted on ships and fired off into enemy ships. The designs showed how it would be used.
The cannon focuses the force energies that resonate in the large kyber crystal channeling it into the focusing lens and then blasting it outwards in a short range. For most ships it won't reach capital ship range but it can provide a number of hits directly to enemy ships. The force energy made to impact against the hull of a ship and send a blast of force energy throughout it disabling organics and droids within but leaving it intact.
The designs and cannon were adapted by Sasori who had been experimenting with the methods of it. Making the crystal blasters and shots but this was on a much larger scale of what they were getting things done. The jedi allowing themselves to test it and work with the design. The larger scale means they are relying on the crystal itself and the materials to power it as a weapon.
That also means that it cannot fire off as much as the smaller versions they have developed, the slower rate of fire helps to balance the wider spread and the blasts that are created cannot harm beings that are able to be caught in the shockwave it creates. Immunity or higher resistance to the force allows someone to avoid the effects of it.
The work that has went into the crystal itself to properly shape it from a large uncut crystal into a focused one that fits in the cannon and resonates the force with a focused shot through the lens once they release it sending a short range shot made to hit other ships. The small and lightweight design of the cannon is ideal for it to be used with different vehicles, mounts and ships.
The cannon itself is a less lethal and more upscaled larger version of the different Sasori equipment. From a force light gun designed to harm darksiders and sithspawn. o the underbarrel crystal that is able to be used on equipment or mounted on the wrist. It allows the jedi to as long as they have energy to charge it near unlimited shots unless they pass out.
Equipment such as the directional crystal as well serves much the same way and works directly. Their healing crystal absorbs healing energy with much the same. The larger the crystal the more it resonates with the force and the more they can focus it into a lens and blast to go outwards in a single direction. Muh like First order vessels that used them kyber crystals to augment them.
Orihime and Sorel have worked with it and after the initial proposal failed joined Arisa Yune on Klatooine where she was offering ways to work on the cannon. Marked improvements but also ways to take it from the realm of non lethal to destructive which didn't sit right with the pair of jedi who had discovered it. Orihime was looking at many of the things for herself as she went over some of the things.
While the smaller versions could be used to hrm people they were also not made to go after large groups of people. There was a difference and they were working on some fo the ideas to better improve upon it. To build it up and use the cannon as a method with the force energies from the crystals being recharged by the jedi themselves as they are sending it out. Used in ships to augment itself with the same methods and crystal workings of Sasori's artisan's.
Orihime has worked with Sorel before she wanted to work on more things, going out with her sister Willow to gather more crystals. While her work with her sister wasn't that impressive or standard she really tried to get the girl to do things and went for moving things out with the two of them on Rhen Var. The ability to gather crystals so that they would be able to use all of it.
