Braze had been looking forward to spending some time with Jasper, and one thing he had wanted to do for quite a while was go drinking with him.

He had chosen a battered little dive in one of Coronet City's older industrial districts, close enough to the spaceport that pilots, mechanics, and travelers crowded its tables. Its sign had lost several letters to age and blaster fire, leaving half the name glowing above a durasteel door scarred by decades of boots, fists, and poor decisions.

Music rolled through the open entrance, accompanied by laughter, clinking glasses, and the occasional heated protest from the sabacc tables. Inside, the air carried the scent of engine grease and Corellian whiskey. Red and gold stripes decorated the dark walls in honor of the bloodstripes worn by Corellia's heroes.

Most of the patrons appeared to be veterans. Weathered unit patches hung alongside battered helmets, faded squadron banners, and holographs whose smiling subjects had never grown any older. Behind the bar, separate from the other decorations, a pair of genuine red Corellian bloodstripes had been framed without a name or explanation beneath them.

The owner stood below them, polishing a glass with one hand. Age had silvered his hair and stiffened one leg, though his posture retained the square-backed bearing of someone who had spent years answering to a rank. His gaze traveled over Braze, paused upon the slight weight beneath his coat, then returned to the glass without comment.

Braze glanced about the room, taking in the scuffed tables, the crowded bar, and the old service droid dispensing drinks with all the warmth of an ammunition counter.

"This seemed more interesting than somewhere respectable,"

"This seemed more interesting than somewhere respectable,"

"Well, respectable can sometimes mean it lacks personality," Jasper noted. "Besides, this place is plenty respectable."

Jasper felt a bit of tightness in his chest being in a place like this. He still remembered the day that he earned his bloodstripes from Dracken Pryce Dracken Pryce . While Sacorrian himself, which was within the Corellian System, Jasper had always held a deep respect for Corellia and its customs. Their engineering, their military, the Green Jedi. It was a place he wish he was able to spend more time at. He always wore his bloodstripes, and they may have been his most prized honorific. Maybe even more so than the electrum on his lightsaber.

The Jedi Master, of course, sat himself down at the bar. It was the right place to be in this sort of establishment. Jasper never sat at a booth in a dive bar.

"I'm getting myself a whiskey," Jasper told Braze. "You ever had whiskey before? I know you only just started being able to drink, but I also don't imagine you'd like it. Then again, you do drink spicy tea..."

That one was just odd. Not bad, just odd. Jasper still had not decided if he liked the spicy tea or not.

Braze padded after him and slipped into the booth across from him.

“I’ve been taking a liking to martinis made with spotchka,” he offered softly. “They’re pretty, and I have them with a particular kind of fruit… Eloise Dinn Eloise Dinn actually introduced me to them. They’re a little addictive, I won’t lie.”

He settled back against the seat, his gaze lingering upon Jasper.

“So… how have you been feeling lately?”

Perhaps it had been weighing upon him more than he cared to admit. Both he and Jasper seemed to have lost touch with people they had once known and loved, leaving silence where familiar voices had once been.

“So… how have you been feeling lately?”

"Admittedly, not as bad as I have been," Jasper admitted. "Calm before the storm is still calm. My worries aren't gone, just... within manageable range at the moment. It feels good to be proactive while all of that is still in my grasp."

Because the truth was that he knew it was only a matter of time before he lost control again and was just along for the ride. It always happened, much as he hated it.

So he wanted to make the most of what he could control while he still could.

"Suppose there's still a side of that which is negative," he noted, "But I'm trying to be positive. We still have things that are important to us, yeah? Like each other, and the people that followed us to the Outer Rim. I think that's something worth staying positive about."

"That's good." Braze chirped softly before he offered a small sigh.

"We're alive, yeah?" Braze said with a smile. "Any day this side of the dirt is a good day, yeah?" He took another sip, seeming rather pleased with that conclusion.

"I'm positive you'll enjoy the menu I have planned for the housewarming party… You're invited, I hope you know~" He then put in his order.

"I'll have a filthy, in-and-out namana-tini with spotchka. Make it skate, with a slice for garnish."

The waitress would return with an utterly ridiculous-looking drink, its glass rimmed in neon pink and orange sugar, while the brilliant blue liquid within seemed almost luminous.

Braze regarded the concoction with evident satisfaction before turning his attention back to his company.

"So… how are things with your new student?" Braze asked curiously.

"So… how are things with your new student?"

"Different," Jasper admitted. "He's learning a lot about the galaxy, which isn't bad. It just means there are some things you have to explain a little more. That and he's your age, so he's starting a bit older. He's learning fast though, so I imagine he'll do well. He seems to be quite earnest and eager to help."

They just needed to work on making sure that eagerness wasn't putting Starlin in danger. It wasn't going to be an overnight process, but he had faith that they'd get their slowly but surely.

"I... well, I wasn't expecting to take on new students so soon," he noted, taking his newly-arrived whiskey into hand. "I wasn't going to say no, though. It's the ultimate duty of any Jedi, after all. I think if I shied away from it I'd be doing my own teachers a disservice. They didn't share knowledge with me intending on having it be horded. I'll need to ramp up my own training though."

He took a sip of his drink for a moment before he spoke again.

"I don't wanna be rusty."

"We could always trade a few rounds in the ring… I'm still pretty spry when I don't have a hurt ligament. Or, you know, maybe even Aether… he never gets tired… which is kind of annoying," Braze offered softly.

"And I've kinda just started trying to teach as many young students as I come into contact with," Braze offered lightly. "The High Republic has a few bright-eyed young Jedi… I've been trying to offer what I can, where I can, in the hopes that my knowledge will live on with others long past my own time… if that makes sense?" Braze half asked, a little uncertain, before he took a sip of his fruity drink. He slipped it across the table. "Wanna try it~?" he asked with a goofy little smile.

He slipped it across the table. "Wanna try it~?"

"Nah, I'll pass," Jasper insisted. "Namana is addictive, y'know? Get enough of that in my system and I'd drink this place dry."

He liked sweet drinks, but it had to be the right one. Something with a bit of balance, and usually more on the boozy side. Jasper had a very high tolerance, after all. The flavor was only one part of the experience. The other was getting that little buzz to help put the mind at ease.

Jasper offered Braze a coy smile.

"You knew it was addictive, yeah?" he asked. "You should always know what's in the drink you're getting."

He took another sip of his drink.

"So, house warming party. That for your project back on Veridia?"

“I did, yes… I don’t really crave it, though…” he mused softly. “I mean, the flavor is really nice, but… I dunno… maybe it doesn’t work as well on me?” he half-asked. “It’s not like I’m constantly thinking about having it again and again… But it’s rather nice when I do take a drink… It doesn’t take very much for me to feel that… altered state of thought…” Braze offered before brightening with a smile.

“Yeah… I’ve been working on the place for quite a while now… ever since I was sort of ‘exiled’ by Jand Talo Jand Talo , really… I kinda made it a spite project, in a way… but not quite the same as a Barash Vow. I did immerse myself in the Force through meditation, kinda… went a little crazy with everything I did… Is it weird that I haven’t spent much time… just… resting there? Like an actual home? I kinda built it to be a relaxing safe haven where I could bring my friends and family together under one roof and just… enjoy each other’s company and feel… safe for a while… It just feels like I haven’t actually had the time to use it for its intended purpose… I learned a whole lot about different arts and trades through that project… Practically drowned myself in educational projects and sourcing materials…”

He let out a heavy sigh. “I’m rambling again, huh?” he asked. At least this time, he wasn’t spiraling out of anxiety; these were simply his typical racing thoughts, veering off on tangents in every direction. Surely anyone who sought to read Braze’s surface thoughts would find the cacophony disorienting. More often than not, it was a good thing he kept such a tight hold on his mental shields.

He sipped a little more of the fruity shrimp drink, releasing a content sigh as tension bled from his small form. “This… is nice…” he murmured after taking a few moments to just… exist and be in the moment.

“I’m rambling again, huh?”

"You are quite good at it," Jasper remarked, making light of Braze's statement. "But... rambling comes from somewhere earnest. Better to let words flow freely than not."

“This… is nice…” he murmured after taking a few moments to just… exist and be in the moment.

Jasper didn't respond to those words right away. He sort of just sat there, not really saying anything. It was a strange time to reflect on his journey, and how he even got here. So often he wound up making choices that were in direct conflict with his doubts, and the belief he had in his own abilities. It hadn't lead to a very quiet life, admittedly. There were many who certainly craved his existence. It was thrilling, filled with heroics and glory, followed by success in the face of insurmountable odds. Even so, he couldn't help but be drawn away from that noise. Jasper wasn't an extraordinary individual, or an eccentric hero.

He was just a man, one who wanted life to be simple and quiet. A man who, out of obligation to his morals, could not simply step away from his current path.

"It is nice," he finally agreed. "We should do this more often..."

It did make him happy to be here. After all of his trials, he could simply be. Rest for a moment, and be content. Jasper knew that Braze was adept at reading emotions.

He made no effort to mask them, just as he always had.
