Conversion fields are a type of ray shield used predominantly by Avali and Satorian voidcraft. The conversion field was developed as a direct response to the decision made by Excan Tlahtoloyan to isolate the Xak Tharakus system. This isolation prevented the Citalee Spacers Guild from accessing traditional ray shielding modules upon which they previously relied, as a result, the Sacul clan began development on a new shielding solution utilising readily available resources.
This project resulted in the creation of a conversion field prototype. Tested by the Citalee Spacers Guild, they found it to be a suitable replacement, testing also revealed the dangers of the system when twenty Satorians lost their lives as transonic containment failed. After the relevant individuals were reprimanded for the incident additional safety measures were installed.
- Nouvarium Batteries - Energy that strikes the ray shield is siphoned into Nourvarium batteries which provide the shield it's strength. Therefore, shield strength is propotional to the number of dedicated battery banks that are installed.
- Energy/Matter Conversion - Due to the nature of Nouvarium Crystals, absorbed energy accelerates the minerals growth, this can potentially be benefical or detrimental depending on the circumstances (see description for more details).
- Expandable Storage - Increasing the number of battery banks increases the shields capacity, allowing for flexibility in starship design.
- Low Power Draw - The system has low power overheads, creating headroom for other subsystems aboard ships.
- Ionic Dispersion - While still effected by Ion weaponry, conversion fields are no more vulunerable to it as any other energy weapon type.
- Harvesting - Nouvarium Crystals can potentially be harvested and recycled into other components or materials following an engagement, this can aid with repairing of suitable modules.
- Meltdown - Overburdening the system can lead to a catastrophic system failure, leading to Nouvarium containment being breached or in worst case scenario crystal delamination. Some vessels may have ejection protocols to mitigate the risk of this event.
- Discharge - While efficient the ray shield can take longer to recharge than traditional systems.
- Analogue - The Conversion Field is a passive system (on/off), it's facing cannot be changed, and it cannot be reinforced without adding additional batteries and/or projectors.
