Constant War

I've been sitting and musing over a planet to create. A Commonwealth colony that is in a state of perpetual war. Imagine a landscape akin to Europe during WW1 and WW2. Artillery-made craters as far as the eye can see, trenches running hundreds of miles, as complex as a maze, the thick haze of war clinging over the fields of battle, and no mans land.

Anyone have any input or ideas they want to present and I'll add it into the draft I'll write up

Our perpetual enemy there could be primarily subterranean. That would preclude any orbital bombardments to end the war and require our troops into an utterly alien environment to take the fight to them.

Maybe make them a hive minded insectoid race or amalgamation of hive minded insectoidish races. Completely alien to us and very difficult to understand.

Could be like two rival "families", a la Hatfields and McCoys, or two giant cities that after colonization they developed different political views, one Pro Commonwealth, one Anti Commonwealth. Could also be two rival companies vying for dominance of a resource and they use Mercs for their war
