Intent: A highly advanced ion cannon derived from exotic technology.

Manufacturer: Silk, Galactic Alliance
Model: QQ-X1/3 Conqueror
Affiliation: The Underground and select customers. Galactic Alliance
Modularity: No
Production: Limited (usable on limited-production starships only).
Material: Exotic technology, standard starship weapon housings.
Classification: Exotic ion cannon.
Size: Comparable to a fighter- or capital-grade ion cannon.
Length: Comparable to a fighter- or capital-grade ion cannon.
Weight: Comparable to a fighter- or capital-grade ion cannon.
Ammunition Type: Comparable to a fighter- or capital-grade ion cannon.
Ammunition Capacity: Comparable to a fighter- or capital-grade ion cannon.
Effective Range: Comparable to a fighter- or capital-grade ion cannon.
Special Features:
  • Conqueror Ion Cannons completely bypass ray/particle/deflector/etc. shielding.
  • Conqueror Ion Cannons require massive amounts of power. When Conqueror Ion Cannons are fired, and for a handful of seconds afterward, the firing ship's shields drop by 15-50% depending on what proportion of a ship's guns are made up of Conquerors. Continuous firing of these weapons could compromise shields and potentially other systems.
  • Conqueror Ion Cannons are roughly 80% as effective as standard ion cannons against ship systems.
Description: Conqueror Ion Cannons are derived from Qektoth Confederation technology, found several months' journey past Kal'Shebbol into the least charted areas of the Kathol Outback. Qektoth technology was, at one point, obtained by the Fringe Confederation, but proved unwieldy and was only ever employed on a single class of vessel. When the Rebel Alliance obtained one of those vessels, the guns were cannibalized for emergency use and research purposes. Eventually, the Alliance's successor, the Underground, identified the source of the technology and sent an eighteen-month expedition into the Kathol Outback. The expedition succeeded in, among other things, procuring and adapting large amounts of Qektoth weapons technology, then returning to the known galaxy. The adapted and captured weapons were sold to Silk Holdings in return for access to derivative technologies. Silk generally keeps the Conqueror off publicly known product lists and sells only to select customers.

The primary obstacle to duplication of Qektoth ionic weapons principles was the partially biological nature of Qektoth technology. Between the efforts of the Underground expedition and the Silk R&D teams, the precise energy/particle effects of Qektoth ionic weaponry were duplicated through wholly technological means, and weaponized into limited production.

The resulting weapons, in a holdover from the Qektoth weapons, cause immense power drain. Qektoth ships generally take the balance from their shield systems in somewhat non-intuitive ways. The modernized, refined Conqueror Ion Cannon requires an amount of power comparable to a heavy turbolaser at capital scale, and a full three cannons at starfighter scale. Advanced reactors and other sacrifices are generally required. The default mode is for the Conqueror, when fired, to reduce the originating ship's shield strength by 15-50% for the duration of fire and a handful of seconds afterward. This can reduce shield strength to 0%, creating an exploitable gap. This proportion is dependent upon, among other things, the proportion of a ship's guns which are composed of Conquerors.

Primary Source: Information on Qektoth technology found in the DarkStryder Campaign, primarily The Kathol Outback.

Ok this is a fairly tricky one. I could see it being acceptable or easily abused in terms of balance.

For example, I think a smaller ship using these to target specific enemy systems would be acceptable.

A Star Destroyer, using a fraction of its armaments could well waltz through the battlefield disabling frigates and corvettes with reckless abandon.

It's got a canon source (albeit low level) and good development.

Could we perhaps add, that continued firing of these weapons could compromise shields and potentially other systems? In my mind this would make this a good niche weapon with tactical application, whilst preventing someone from spamming this constantly from a massive warship with redundant shields.
