- Avian: These strange little buggers can fly naturally when in their relaxed form.
- Limited Shapeshifters: It probably began with feathers and skin that could change color, and maybe in combination with 'telescopic' bones, but these flying terrors can (with limits) change their outward appearance at will. This can be done from color, shape, and even size if they eat enough. As described below, they cannot change their genes and suddenly sprout gills for water breathing, or rearrange their internal organs and completely change the way they work, but they can shift muscle position in concert with hollow rubbery-like cartilage bones that bend and compress/collapse/stretch with ease.
- Superior Ominvore: Through a special acidic compound that can be generated from the roof and tongue of the beak, these avians can eat and digest just about anything they choose. If there is anything useful for the (re)construction of the body it will be absorbed and used. It is most useful when attempting to regain mass after shifting into something small, and just as useful when the body needs to grow larger.
- Bendy bones: Due to their evolution for shapeshifting, it has become near impossible for them to break a bone.
- Edible health: Due to them being able to eat near anything and use it directly for construction, minor wounds are literally nothing to them, and more sever ones are less threatening. However internal damage to the organs is as always with any creature crippling. They do however recover faster if they have eaten, or can eat.
- They have an acute sense of sight, smell, and hearing.
- Severe Allergies: These Avians are deathly allergic to near any type of metal, a small graze sending particles through the blood stream can make them woozy and intoxicated. In large amounts the toxin is fatal. It is transferred either through consumption, through the blood stream, or simple particles entering into the sinuses .
- Foam bad!: A strange reaction occurs between foaming agents and the surface skin of this Avian, which causes a paralysis from the chemical reaction. This renders movement (including shapeshifting) impossible. It should also be noted that as this is a reaction of two substances, when in contact with foam their skin literally burns away, causing severe pain.
- Bird Brain: They are birds, and birds take risks. It is rare to see this Avian die of old age, as each year the same risks taken the year before are taken then, until their luck runs out and they are dead.
- The sense of touch and taste is either dulled or non-existent.
Distinctions: An Avian race of shapeshifters whom upon contact to foaming agents are paralyzed and thus can no longer control their ability to change shape. Their beaks are lined with an acidic coating allowing them to digest nearly anything when 'activated', but they have a crucial weakness in this strange ability to eat anything, (allowing them to collect enough mass to change forms into things several times bigger than themselves) metallic substance's. Like foam, these shifty birds are strangely drawn away from nearly any kind of metal, the reason being the entire race is fatally allergic to them when in large enough quantities. The allergy can intoxicate them through ingestion, or absorption through the blood stream (i.e. gets cut up by metal and the result is that the Alien becomes intoxicated and sick, degrading their combat performance to nil).
They are shapeshifters, however they are not gene shufflers. They cannot magically grow gills and go deep into the ocean, or rearrange their organs to suit any environment. They are as the name implies, Shapeshifters. They have a basic ability to change their outward appearance and Phenotype, and internally they are normally prepared, with hollow rubbery-like cartilage that allows them to be easily bent or condensed without breaking. The weakness to foam though is a chemical reaction to the skin however, perhaps an allergy, but what it does cause a paralysis chemical to be produced when in contact. This then means that foam slowly eats away at their skin.
Average Lifespan: Old age occurs at around 60 to 70 years, after that point all members are expected to die of risk.
Races: There are too many races to be counted, as they are shapeshifters, and thus do not retain to the human concept of races.
Diet: Nearly anything, but is fatally allergic to metals in large amounts (requires entry either through digestion or through the blood stream)
Communication: Avian Singing/Shrieking and also mimicking.
Culture: Nearly the entire culture rests upon the flock and their abilities as a species as a whole. Cuisine is not a word within their vocabulary and also the preparation of food is out of the question. All-consuming beings don't need to have taste buds and thus don't care how their food is prepared. This does however render them useless at detecting toxins that are harmful to the body. However, if a food smells particularly metallic they will stay away from it, partially because they know its poisonous and the other reason being they begin to get sick by the simple particles it is emanating into the air. The sickness isn't fatal or large, but it makes them uncomfortable enough to leave the area.
They do have a warrior culture that stands today, but they have been unable to leave their planet due to them being allergic to metals. Thus their entire technological advancement is based upon medicine's, architecture, and ecology. While the rest of the galaxy has fought millennium ago with steel swords, these birds could only do battle with wooden ones, or reinforced stone swords. They also have a very developed sense of banking.
Technology level: Tier one
General behavior: Ravaturn could be considered gluttons for their excessive food scavenging, anything from animals smaller than themselves (depending also on their current size) to plants. Ordinarily a beast like this would be killing off entire ecosystems except for the fact that their eggs make a tasty snack for many other scavengers, which dulls their population, but more importantly they have a higher taste for meat than plants. Specifically their favorite foods would be things that take less work, as in animals that are already dead. They are very opportunistic and will defend their prizes with everything they have. They treat their young similarly, being as they must defend their young from common predators. Considering they are an all devouring shapershifter, it is surprising to find that they are not the apex predator, and are actually fearful of many animals. When "a bigger bird" comes within their territory they flock together in order to kill it. These targets could be anything from actual birds to any assortment of larger animal.
As for love, they are very monogamous and stay with a particular partner for their smell and song rather than their looks, which can change at will. They are generally very offended by someone commenting on their smell, a very personal matter that is usually constant regardless of form. It is also unwise to insult them verbally as they have a far more descriptive language in which to retort your insult; which by the way most of their humor is intended to insult others of their actions. It isn't often that a pretty and bright color distracts them despite being a bird, as they can often replicate these colors with ease. However, younger Ravaturn find different colors very soothing, as it allows them to test their ability to change color.
