PRODUCTION INFORMATION

Manufacturer: Czerka Mining & Industrial
Model: CMI-RAD Shield
Affiliation: Closed-Market
Modularity: No
Production: Mass-Produced
Material: Durasteel, standard shield materials.

SPECIAL FEATURES

⊿ Focuses on countering the harmful effects of radiation.
⊿ Heavily reinforced against ionization and similar effects.
⊿ Scale-able to a large degree.

DETAILED SPECIAL FEATURES

Its entire purpose is to act as a shield against the harmful effects of all manners of radiation, this could be the deadly rays a star projects or the radiation of a thermonuclear device. Furthermore, it is equipped and reinforced against sabotage or simply occurring interference of ionic weaponry and ionization by the way of recessed buffers which can siphon off the crippling effects. Finally the design is immensely scale-able similar to most deflector shields, which means it could be used as a personal shield, shielding for a capital-sized starship or a shield projector for a ground facility.

But it is not made for combat purposes in mind, it has a negligible effect on energy-based fire and does no stop projectiles in any way, this means that while it could completely halt the radiation of a nuke? The blast would still be capable of wiping out a facility outfitted with such shielding.

It is also a very heavy energy drain for your systems.

For example: a starship with standard energy reactors and generators would have to disable this shield, if it wishes to enable its more contemporary deflector shields and vice versa. This means that while the switch is made the starship is a sitting duck for one side of the equation.

Strengths:

Very strong against radiation.
Heavily reinforced against ionization and similar effects.

Weaknesses:

Has no defensive capabilities against ordinary combat capabilities.
Puts a heavy energy drain on the systems.
Prone to shorting out and leaving the users exposed, if not handled with care.

DESCRIPTION

Czerka Mining & Industrial prides itself in being capable of localizing and then exploiting profitable ventures.

During one of its exploration missions they came across a very valuable asteroid that held a bounty of rich and expensive minerals. Almost immediately an operation was signed off to start mining operations on this asteroid, but only a few weeks in did they come across... problems with their venture. A single distress signal was send out back to a nearby Czerka emergency beacon and when a team of researchers arrived on the asteroid the scene was not pretty. The entire crew of the mining station was found dead, dozed and soaked by deadly radiation flares from the nearby star.

Apparently it flared up irregularly and made it exceptionally difficult to exploit the star system without getting killed by it. Immediately Czerka set off to find a solution for this problem. From research in ancient technology they came across the Rad-dampening shielding that was used to protect sentients from the harmful effects of radiation.

Derivative technology could be found haphazardly throughout the Galaxy and Czerka decided to make use of this technology themselves.

It took them months, but eventually they managed to create a scale-able design for a shield generator that could suitably shield facilities, people and ships from deadly radiation with some disadvantages attached to it. After making it a standard piece of equipment within the corporation, they made the decision to produce a market version of it for the greater masses.

Hopefully it would lead to far less causalities in the Galaxy.
