Calrissian Plaza

Classification: City Square
Location: Bespin, Cloud City, upper level
Affiliation: Public ownership. Current administration loyal to the First Order
Description:
Resting on the highest level of Cloud City, Calrissian Plaza is a scenic city square overlooking the rest of the landscape for the residents of Bespin to enjoy. No expense was spared in the plaza's construction in the city's quest to create a truly breathtaking public space. In the middle lies an artificial lake, filed with fish and a statue of Lando Calrissian in the centre, which separates the plaza into two sections. The North section hosts a variety of shops, restaurants and hotels while the South has a forest, again artificial, to give citizens a taste of the natural life they would otherwise miss living on Cloud City. Calrissian plaza is the go to destination for public events and holidays in Cloud City and Bespin overall.
History:
Cloud City's Baron Administrator, Lando Calrissian, was a Rebel General and hero of the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Galactic Civil War. Upon his death, it was decided the Plaza would be a fitting tribute to the man. After some initial difficulties with costs and protests that the money would be better spent on welfare and infrastructure, the construction proceeded smoothly. Over the centuries several rejuvenation projects have been necessary to keep the pristine conditions intact, most notably during the Gulaq Plague where almost all of Cloud City's finances were directed towards finding a cure and treatment of its citizens. In spite of this it has endured the centuries relatively in the same state it was envisioned.
The arrival of the First Order caused many to fear for the Plaza's fate. It was true that the new Imperial administration strongly disapproved of the Plaza being named after what was, in their view, a criminal and traitor who helped put the Empire into decline but practicality and appeasement of local culture won out against demands of renaming the square. Calrissian Plaza had existed for centuries, any attempt to rename or redecorate it in the immediate occupation would only lead to further dissent amongst the populace. However there are already signs this accommodation cannot last forever. As the First Order's 'reeducation' program begins to win the minds of residents, the statue of Lando Calrissian was vandalised within a few months of the occupation. Many people in Cloud City woke up horrified to find the word SCOUNDREL smeared across the statue of their hero. Although it was promptly removed, the authorities have shown a lack of interest in bringing the culprit to justice.
Intent:
To provide a thriving social location for characters to use on Bespin
