Private Bogano Blues

Bogano - a backwards planet for a backwards job. Despite his partner Jin's protests, being as they were in the system, and short on cash it seemed a good idea to at least capitalize on the opportunity for some extra credits. Feeling the deceleration of their ship, Pak got up from his co-pilot seat as he tapped Jin's shoulder at the wheel, "Could be worse Tae. We could be going after something a lot worse." he said with a smirk as he moved to a different section of their ship. A series of chirps and digital beeps were heard, followed by a small BB astromech droid rolling after Pak, squeaking in as sassy of a manner as a droid could muster. "Even R-4T thinks it could be worse."
Pak crouched down as he opened up a compartment, pulling out a shelf as he began rummaging through the disorganized mess of devices stored inside. Something to help them out with handling a nightmarish toad. There were loads of different equipment they've stockpiled over the years since taking on the life of a smuggler, and more often than not they've helped them out of a jam. His fingers wrapped around a small disc shaped device that could fit on a belt, a XV-001 'Liskarm' Pattern Shield System, tossing it gently into the air a few times as he inspected it, sufficiently satisfied that it would be usable before glancing back towards the cockpit and calling out.
"Toss a coin for who's going to be bait?"

The moment Bogano's lopsided horizon filled the cockpit window, Tae slouched deeper into the pilot's seat like the planet had personally offended him—one boot hooked on the console, the other tapping idly against the deck. He stayed there just long enough to watch the horizon tilt as the ship settled, then pushed off and followed the sound of Pak rummaging through their gear.

He tilted his head just enough to smirk. "Yeah, but if it were worse, at least the payout might cover therapy."

The ship hummed through its final approach as he leaned against the doorway, arms folded. The locker clanged and rattled with the usual assortment of questionable equipment while Pak pulled out the shield unit. Beside him, R-4T chirped a smug little commentary—smug for a droid, anyway. Tae shot him a look. "Don't get cocky, tin can. You're not the one on the menu."

Digging into his pocket, Tae's thumb brushed the familiar weight of a polished coin—double-headed, worn smooth from years of cheap tricks. "Heads, you're bait. Tails…" He flicked it high, watching the spin catch the light.

R-4T zipped past at exactly the wrong moment, clipping his shin and making him lurch forward. The coin wobbled midair, a faint metallic click breaking its rhythm as the false face popped loose. A very real tails flashed once before it clattered to the deck and skidded to a stop at Pak's boots.

Tae stared at it, jaw tight, then shifted that glare to the droid. "You're both in on this."

He palmed the coin, sliding it back into his pocket before hefting the shield. "Fine. I'll go sweet-talk the galaxy's ugliest amphibian. But if it swallows me, you're writing the eulogy—and it better make me sound taller."

"There's not enough credits in the Galaxy to cover your therapy costs Tae." Pak gave a small smile as he pushed off his knee and stood up, the shield in one hand while the other rested at his belt as he commented in response to Jin's little snap at their robotic companion, "Hey, don't be mean to R-4T, he's doing his best."
His eyes focused on Jin as he pulled out the coin and flipped it. His eyes tracked it as R-4T nudged Jin's foot to distract him as he watched the coin land. Classic Jin, trying to play the odds with a rigged coin in a bid to weasel himself out of the worse task, though it seemed fate had a different path for him today as the fake side of the coin was knocked loose to reveal tails. He cocked his head off to the side slightly, tongue in cheek as he smirked before commenting, "Huh... Would you look at that. Tails."
He grinned as he tossed the shield over to Jin, "He's just playing the odds like we do Tae. Don't be a sore loser and get mad at him." He adjusted his coat as he pulled back the side, glancing down at his belt to check his blaster was secure along with a small bandolier of stun grenades.
He walked over as he looked down to check that each one was fastened securely, a stride away from Jin before looking up and reaching out with one hand to rest on his companion's shoulder. "I'll be sure to let everyone know that I was only half the man you'll ever be." His thumb pressed against Jin's clavicle as he followed it with a prompt, "Just remember to watch out for the tongue... And the teeth."
His hand patted Jin's shoulder several times as he turned to go get the cage prepared on a hoverlift. He held a hand out to his side, open as he made a 'give it here gesture', not forgetting about the coin.

Tae caught the shield with a lazy one-handed grab, letting the weight hang at his side as he arched a brow. "Oh, so now you're defending the droid? That's rich. Two days ago, you were threatening to rewire him into a caf machine." R-4T gave a self-satisfied trill from somewhere behind him, which only earned the droid a sidelong glare.
He twirled the coin over his knuckles, all innocent grin, before flipping it once more and catching it in his palm. "Look, I was working the odds," he said, sliding it back toward his pocket.

Pak's hand landed on his shoulder, and whatever warning about "the tongue and the teeth" that followed earned him a quick, crooked smirk. "Sounds like one of your old dates," Tae shot back, brows raising playfully as he shouldered past him toward the ramp.
Halfway there, he paused just long enough to fish the coin out again, tossing it in a lazy arc toward Pak, the fake head clicking back into place.

The ramp cycled open with a pneumatic hiss, and Bogano's thick air rolled into the ship like a living thing. Humid, heavy, buzzing with the drone of a thousand unseen insects. Tae clipped the shield generator to his belt and thumbed it active. Energy shimmered around him, bending the air like heat rising off sun-baked duracrete.
"Well then." He stepped down into grass that came up to his knees, his boots immediately sinking into the spongy ground with a wet squelch. Every step felt like walking through soggy bread. "Time to go make nice with the locals."
He glanced back over his shoulder, giving them a lazy two-finger salute. "If you hear screaming, you'll know how it went."
Then he pushed into the undergrowth, humming something off-key as the green swallowed him whole.

"He has his moments. Just like you, I'd say." Pak said as he glanced over at R-4T and leaned in close to quietly whisper, "You know I would never." The BB unit squeaked in a sarcastic tone before it turned its head unit away in a sassy manner.
"I'm sure yours were far worse than mine." He retorted in response to Jin's comment on his past relationships, grinning in amusement. The coin flipped in the air and into Pak's hand as his fingers closed around it, stuffing their little charm into his coat's pocket. "Be sure to give the Oggdo a kiss, maybe it'll turn into your prince charming and make our job easier."
Pak grunted as he pushed a large cage onto one of the hovercarts, getting it settled in as R-4T beeped and shrilled at him as Jin went on ahead of them. "He'll be fine. And if he isn't, well I know you're a fan of saying I told you so." He glanced down at the droid before reaching down and scooping him up, grunting as he set the droid back down on a neatly fashioned slot just for him on the cart.
R-4T chirped and squeaked at him as the droid's optic focused on the bandolier of stun grenades on the cart. Pak sighed as he raised a hand up to his face, gently pinching the bridge of his nose, "You're right...He did forget the stuns..." he drew in a long exaggerated breath before huffing quietly and muttering to himself, "I hope his legs run faster than his mouth..." He threw on a pair of gloves quickly as he pushed the cart and cage down the ramp, following after Jin's direction and signal.
