ADVANCED SYSTEMS

Defense
Utility
Strengths:

 • Massive hangar space, able to host thousands of vessels at a time.

 • Ability to launch craft into sub-hyperspace, and also travel through it. In sub-hyperspace, craft is able to move through solid objects and mass effects due to the nature of the dimension.

 • Advanced networking capabilities.

 • Excellent defenses, including high resistance to slicing with its suite of countermeasures.
Weaknesses:

 • Like all space stations, Bifröst is slow moving, especially at 80km in diameter. The only thing it’s outrunning is possibly another behemoth station.

 • As a civilian station, Bifröst only possesses some weak armaments against enemy boarding craft and missiles.

 • When using its sub-hyperspace launchers, the station must become stationary. It takes about 10 minutes for the launchers to power down and retract so that the station can become mobile again. Neither the launchers or drive can be used within the effective range of an interdictor field.

 • The high energy output of the of the sub-hyperspace launchers and drive can be easily detected across several sectors with a distinctive signature. The routes of craft launched by Bifröst can be easily backtraced to pinpoint the location of the station.
Description:

Bifröst is a massive spherical space station constructed by the Silver Engineering Corporation in association with Kiribian Systems Armory. It was created with the express purpose to help facilitate the flow of trade and knowledge among the Kiribian Systems Union, Silver Jedi and their associates across the galaxy.

The origins of Bifröst begin in the mid 840s as researchers of the scientific agency known as the Kiribian Design Bureau stumbled upon the existence of parallel dimension known as sub-hyperspace while looking into practical applications for dark energy in a project known as Black Harvest.

A new research team was split off from the Black Harvest project to study this dimension in depth. After a few weeks of experiments to reliably access the dimension, an interesting effect was observed during collision tests. The matter could pass through objects and mass shadows with no harm.

The discovery opened up a whole new realm of possibilities as it concerned space travel, as travel times could be dramatically decreased and fuel saved by allowing vessels to take a straight path to their destination without having to make numerous detours around celestial bodies and interstellar clouds. It still wasn’t the holy grail of infinite speed or the mastery of spatial rifts/wormholes, but it was seen as a great advancement in FTL travel nonetheless.

The resulting technologies from sub-hyperspace research branched off into different areas, one of them being transport arrays modeled in the style of ancient hyperspace cannons. A means for all spacefarers to immediately make use of the sub-hyperspace travel while the technology for personal use matured.

KSA partnered up with the Silver Jedi through their in-house manufacturing arm, SEC. Concerned about the ramifications of the advanced interdictor technologies at the First Order's disposal, the Silver Jedi had started looking into a means to ensure the free flow of trade and communications for the galaxy and thought they found a possible answer with KSA.

By far the single costliest project to date for the SJO, they were able to cover the costs of construction from all the new revenue streams created from sales of their new lines of starships and space stations like the Beldon gas mining rigs. Their Bacta producing hospital ships, in particular, netted obscene amounts of profits in the wake of the glassing of Thyferra by the Sith Empire, which up to that point had been the galaxy's single largest producer of Bacta. Additional funding was provided by the government of Kiribi, having a vested interest in the project as a trade and finance power.

Costs were expected to be quickly recouped as the station came online and users were charged for the extreme cost-saving benefits of the transport system. In a measure to increase revenue, it was also designed to function as a major trade hub and the backbone a new and parallel Holonet network branching out into the Mid and Outer Rim.

Sub-Hyperspace Arrays/Drive

When stationary, Bifröst can deploy a network of launcher platforms that function to accelerate objects into sub-hyperspace. Their function is very similar to early hyperspace cannons, but use a specific impulse sequence from hyperdrive motivators to launch the craft into sub-hyperspace instead of a straight acceleration into hyperspace. Travel routes are determined and programmed by the launchers as users share their desired destination. As with normal hyperspace transit, vessels moving through sub-subspace would induce drag to return to realspace at the end of their journey. Of course, when mobile, When mobile and launcher and docking arrays retracted, Bifröst can also traverse through sub-hyperspace.

Observers had noted that launched craft leave a bright contrail of rainbow lights right as they cross into sub-hyperspace, specific to the launchers.

Hangars

Being the size of a large island, Bifröst can easily host thousands of small and medium-sized freighters, and dozens of larger vessels up to the size of star destroyers. Larger vessels like Battlecruisers are able to dock around external rings.

Inside the station, there are massive warehouses for long-term storage, as well as beautiful city like residential modules capable of comfortably housing ~50 million, but in emergencies, it can house tens of millions more.

Networking

Bifröst possesses hundreds of powerful memristor-based neural networks spread across an area of tens of thousands of kilometers for the purposes of hosting its own parallel high-speed holonet, free from interference by hostile groups that attempt to limit the spread of information. Powered by Freyja communications systems sourced from Locke and Key Mechanics, it’s able to create multiple sector spanning networks by syncing with friendly communication nodes. All networks are heavily encrypted, protected by Mithril Security, as well as a dedicated security AI unit overseen by small teams of ITs and whitehats.

Same issue as the other;
 • Hangar: Civilian stations are not used to hold starfighter squadrons. You may list Vehicles or Docking Bays for capital ships or other items of note here.

I appear to have missed a number of features in the first go around with this that have since been reported.

 • All of this reads as a military station whose purpose is to jump from its stationary position anywhere on the map directly into an invasion and release thousands of ships, including star destroyers and battlecruisers, whilst utilizing stealth technology and sub-hyperspace.
Please remove the functionality of traveling through sub-hyperspace and all mention of it being able to appear anywhere in the galaxy. Intentional or not, this reads as a massive superweapon akin to deathstar levels in terms of its ability to become nothing more than an astronomically sized starship carrier. Otherwise I have to deny this submission.

My intent here was to toy with the new civilian platform, finally submitting an idea I've had for a while, and create a plot device for future stories. This is was written as being one giant science project.

As a military asset, this would make for a very good carrier. It's a station the size of a small country, effectively immobile as it concerns sublight travel (meaning it can never escape an interdictor by outrunning it), has no offensive systems, and no capability to carry its own dedicated fighter escort. In combat scenarios, this station becomes a huge liability that requires its own battle group or fleet to guard while providing zero support functions.

The shawyer drives on their own don't benefit the stations as a stealth system - it's an 80km wide station that will be easy to pick up. The main benefit with the shawyer drives is as a defensive measure, burying the propulsion system within the superstructure to make them more difficult to destroy.

The other thing is that this station simply isn't needed for what you're suggesting. In invasions, as an attacker, I will already have my forces I could want in position for a short jump into a battlespace. Meanwhile, as a defender, I will always have home court advantage and likely already have my own defending force on the scene, with reinforcements nearby. None of these things require the added step of Bifröst to accomplish.

To clarify, are you just talking about Bifrost's own sub-hyperdrive, or its launchers too? This whole station revolves around the use of the launchers, so I'd like a chance to try to balance them to make it work to your satisfaction.

In the time since you pulled this sub, I did another round of research and found that I made a mistake about sub-hyperdrive mechanics. I see that the upper limits of the "phasing" for linear travel seems to stop at celestial masses large enough to generate their own mass shadows. I can tone down the capabilities of all the sub-hyperspace related features to become more in line with canon and become better balanced.

This is part of the issue. It's written as a civilian station and operating as a military station. It can't fly one banner but be used for the other. If it's civilian, it shouldn't be escorting thousands of starships/battlecruisers through sub-hyperspace like a taxi. I would suggest if that is your intent, to alter this station to be a military one, using that template, however even then, it will still require adjustments to be more balanced. However for a civilian station it is vastly outside of that window at present.

Sorry, that was a typo, I meant that it wouldn't make for a good carrier, for the reasons I stated.

I'll work on editing the sub tonight to make it more balanced because my intent was never to make a supercarrier here.
