It was a regular, busied day within the Jedi Temple on Naboo.

The halls of Shiraya's Sanctuary were teeming with the coming and going of Jedi of all ages, species and hierarchy. The younger students were making their way between their classes. Masters walking alongside their Apprentices as they discussed their private affairs, and there was even a hint of guests among them from the Noble Houses of Theed City.

Balun Dashiell wandered at a slow pace, as if clearly lost in thought, staring off to his left at the vast countryside, the Temple grounds watched over. The vast hollow within the beautiful architecture of the Temple wall made for an admirable window seat; unfortunately, his mind hardly rendered the sight as he thought back over the past few days and all that he had been trying to accomplish.

Had it been arrogant to believe he might succeed in the task that had been set for him?

His brows furrowed at the thought, 'No, arrogance would have been expecting success at the first attempt. Persistence and patience are all that I need' he reminded himself. A thought that came easily, though gaining results he knew would require far more effort.

Even so, he could feel the wear and tear of the past week.

The meditation session, which had triggered an intense and traumatic memory from his past, still lingered on his mind, not least because of the discussion he had tried to have with his Apprentice, Cerys Dyn Cerys Dyn . She had unravelled on him that day, in a way he hadn't seen of her before, so sudden and erratic. Volatile.

For a Jedi, he found it rather concerning that anyone could be so close to the edge like that. Her time away from the Order, he started to presume, had done more harm than he had initially imagined, and now he needed to find guidance and plan a safer means of slowly guiding Cerys back to some semblance of stability within herself...

The display of emotions she had shown him...-If the Council had been present, or if she had a similar outburst towards someone else like that. It truly worried him.

Grand Master of the Jedi Order Ala Quin was mopping the floors. And of course, she had some how turned it into a casual dance, as she hummed herself one of her favourite new tunes from Six Vallium and the Gorfargs. She had to admit that the hook was a darn catchy one, but she was not convinced the entirety of the song was going to achieve top five status. Seriously, it would be hard for it to match Bantha Tracks or Down to Korriban We Go*, but she appreciated it nonetheless.

There were many reasons to be out mopping the floors. One, they needed to be cleaned, and she loved watching the cleaning droids fuss when she did their job. Two, it distracted her from thinking about the man she loved, and the distance he had put between them. And three, the Force had nudged her here, for the sake of the one she still thought of as her Padawan.

She loved Balun Dashiell. To Ala, she was akin to family now, even if he did not realise it yet.

When she sensed Balun approaching, crossing a T-junction at the end of the hallway, Ala looked up and waved excitedly to nab his attention.

"How goes life as a Knight?"
She called out, too loud, before blushing and removing her headphones. Ah. Yes. She had just yelled in the silent halls of the Sanctuary. How Grandmastery.

"Master?"

Balun answered, or rather blurted, as he turned in surprise.

How she maintained her consistent upbeat appearance, positive outlook and, for lack of a better term, jovial demeanour despite the serious nature of her role as Grandmaster of the Jedi Order, it was both impressive and difficult to believe, and Balun couldn't help but be a little envious of her capacity to remain so grounded against the weight of the pressure weighing upon her shoulders.

When he noticed that she was holding a cloth-brush, accompanied by a bucket droid carrying what he assumed was dirtied water on a cleaning cycle, Balun frowned to himself and moved to intercept, "No disrespect Master, but this is a little beneath your station, isn't it?" he reached for the mop and took it into his hand hands, moving to continue the job that she had seemingly been enjoying.

Balun Dashiell was not a man who enjoyed cleaning; it was a chore done out of necessity. In this particular case, he was more than willing to dirty his robes rather than have the Grandmaster of the Order, his Master, stand there publicly cleaning the halls of the Jedi Order, while he'd been walking idly with his hands in his pockets.

"The absence of your daily guidance is not lost on me", Balun answered, speaking rather quietly in reply to Ala Quin asking how he was faring adapting to his role as a Jedi Knight. He continued to mop up the marble floor, paying acute attention to the dirt that he sought to eradicate, yet their conversation had been sorely needed, more so than he'd like to admit.

"I find myself in need of personal direction and uncertain where to dedicate the advancement of my training", He continued, pausing to turn back and explain himself further to his Master.

"Not to mention the Apprenticeship that you created for Cerys and me, seems to be going as well as expected...-Come to think of it, you're not here because of an incident report, are you?"

Always needed, her own heartache suppressed, Ala smiled as Balun took the mop from her. "Why thank you Knight Dashiell," she said with fake pomposity, "for reminding me that only peons such as yourself ought to do the manual labour." She left the rebuke with the gentle mockery, and a nudge with her elbow.

"Oh! You missed a spot," she said, pointing towards pillar behind Balun, at the pillar's base there was a half centimetre strip of unmopped floor.

A small yelp of excitement came from further down, Ala looked around Balun to see two younglings playing. Noting her, they stood stiff and apologetic. She waved at them and smiled, giving them leave to immediately relax.

"No...no incident report?" Ala said, not really looking at Balun but still lingering on the younglings, and the dull ache in her chest, "what did you do...hit on her?"

The classic "You missed a spot" joke was one thing.

He responded with a quiet chuckle and went back over the same spot just to appease her.

But the response regarding Cerys Dyn Cerys Dyn completely shocked him, causing him to cease the mopping entirely, back straightening as he turned to stare at Ala Quin Ala Quin as if she'd somehow lost her mind.

He opened his mouth to respond but caught himself for a moment, refraining as he reconsidered.

He had to chuckle dryly at first, shake his head and then laugh a little more. "Shiraya's grace, Ala...." he said aloud as he tried to wrap his head around the fact she'd said that so openly and in a public corridor of all places. Thankfully, not as heavily populated as it could've been. "I guess you didn't make Grandmaster for your sense of discretion, did you?" he added rhetorically.

"And no...-Grife, no, I didn't. Although the way she acted, you'd think I had" he threw a hand up, the other still holding the mop. "She mentioned she was concerned that I was too attached to her, so I was honest and agreed, but told her that as her Master, it's my responsibility to set my personal feelings aside for the sake of her training and our duty as Jedi", Balun explained in a few or less words, trying to keep it easy for Ala to follow. Certainly more so than the situation had felt at the time.

"You'd think I'd insulted her Mother. I'm trying to do the right thing by both of us, and she just freaked out. She even started to mention the word love, which, for the record, I never, in any way, hinted in that direction" he shook his head, frowning to himself and clearly being uncomfortable in the situation, turning to continue mopping the floor so as to focus on something else.

"I'm still struggling to make sense of why you saw reason to pair us together".

Hands up defensively, Ala took on board the criticism about tact. She had it when she needed it, but with Balun...she didn't need nor want it.

One thing was definitely noticeable. She did not answer him regarding why she put them together. Balun figuring that out on his own was half the point of putting them together. Some lessons had to be learned the hard way.

She did however...have questions.

"OK...so...you know that she is very religious about her detachment. Like...she is brainwashed into this like it were a cult...you understand that right?" She said, now leaning on a pillar nearby and watching him be flustered.

"Think really hard...what did you actually say to her when you were being..." She paused to make quotation marks with her fingers. "...honest."

"Like...did you use the word "feelings" or "care" or something like that? Both of them...come on Balun...dish the goss."

"I've known she's always kept people at arm's length, sure, but what do you mean when you say 'Brainwashed'?" Balun asked apprehensively, lifting his head back slightly. Cerys Dyn Cerys Dyn wasn't the type to confide in others, and though he was arguably closer than most to get any sort of information out of her, that wasn't saying much considering how little he actually knew about his Padawan's history. "What exactly was this Cult she was part of?" he frowned, knowing he needed to know more, to truly understand what he was getting himself into.

"Truthfully, I know very little about her before we met here in the Order. It felt more like you and Master Sal-Soren had set us up than anything. We exchanged a few heated insults, and then over the next few months of being forced to work together in the field, we got to know each other more. When she left the Order, it felt more like she'd learned to tolerate me more than anything, but things felt like they'd shifted finally when I got her out of Imperial custody" Balun recited what history they had in quick summary, hoping that Ala Quin Ala Quin would recognise that none of what Balun had mentioned noted anything in the way of information regarding Cerys past traumas.

"And yes, I told her my feelings for her would need to be set aside", He admitted, following a pause, exhaling in frustration. He had thought that being honest with Cerys and even expressing that he had no intention of pursuing anything would have been a relief to her, but it had only pushed her further over the edge; "That I knew she had her struggles with attachment, and that I had no intention of following through with them. I told her even before we had been paired up, I'd recognised that nothing would come of it".

Her expression was akin to a local storm, eyebrows rising and falling like waves with every word he spoke. She screwed up her nose, the tip twitching as she mentally chewed on his confession, before finally deciding that words weren't enough.

She hopped forward, clear-eyed and nimble, and flicked him right on the ear with a sharp snap of her finger.

"You should have lied, dummy!" she blurted, the words tumbling out before she could catch them.

She looked absolutely incredulous. Her head shook with enough furor to mess up her hair, her eyes wide in a theatrical display of frustration that only a former Master, or a very annoyed sibling, could pull off.

"Look...I know you think she's cute. Annoying, sure. A total stick up her butt? Definitely. But cute. And Balun, honey... you have a thing for women who are objectively terrible for you."

She started pacing, her boots clicking a frantic rhythm against the floor. This was the "No-Filter Ala", the side of the Grandmaster that didn't care about dignity or decorum.

"I gave you this assignment for a dozen reasons. Most of them are the 'wise mentor' type that I want you to figure out on your own so I look smart," she waved a hand dismissively, "but one of them...is for you to learn how to love yourself. Truly! Love yourself enough to stop longing for toxic chicks, for the Force's sake! I had hoped that by putting you around her, you'd finally see how miserable you would be if she actually relented to that crush. Neither of you are ready to talk feeeeeelings. By Shiraya..."

With a groan of pure exasperation, she buried her face in her palms. After a moment, her fingers parted apart just enough for her to peer through them at her former Padawan, her gaze equal parts fondness and pity.

"When you tell someone who was literally raised to believe that attachments are a one-way ticket to the Dark Side that you have feelings for them...but that you're totally going to 'suppress' them? Balun. That is like...the single worst thing you could have done."

She dropped her hands, looking at him with a helpless, lopsided shrug. "For real. You need to learn about the noble lie...and you need to learn it fast."

His Master was telling him that he'd screwed up, and the correct answer would have been to lie?

Balun cocked his head to the side, brows furrowing dead centre as he looked at Ala Quin Ala Quin with a mixture of disbelief, confusion and foolishness; Though the latter wasn't necessarily because he felt he had been wrong to speak the truth to Cerys, it was what had become a natural response to being lectured by his mentor.

"Setting her past aside, you're telling me that I should have lied?" He rephrased for clarification, sounding as though it was entirely difficult to believe coming from the Grandmaster of the Jedi Order of all people. "What kind of an example would I be setting her, or anyone else around here, if I lied? Haven't we as Jedi always sought to be open and transparent?"

Or at least, he thought they had.

Balun had gone into the field of conflict and openly introduced himself to the enemy, believing that the Jedi wore their identity as a symbol of hope to the Galaxy, a beacon of service to the Force, every bit in name as they wielded a lightsaber. Perhaps it could be seen as holding a double-edged sword by the blade at times, but while he had many faults, dishonesty was not among them.

He exhaled forcefully, sighing as his shoulders fell and he turned to glance off down the corridor thoughtfully; "I did warn you afterwards, what'd you expect would happen forcing her to be apprenticed to me. I'm barely figuring things out for myself," He laughed bitterly under his breath, not towards his master but self-depractingly.

"Still, I guess now with what you've told me, it explains why she totally lost her chit. Probably didn't help I locked her in the meditation chamber with me, mind you" He shrugged as he turned to glance back to Ala with a guilty smirk, "I told her to meditate, to find a place of calm, but you can imagine how that went. Thought better of it, and she stormed off".

Balun didn't even bother to comment on Ala's remark about his taste in women. Truthfully, his history with them painted a pretty clear picture. Although there had only ever been four that he'd been interested in. Two that didn't reciprocate those feelings, Cerys included, and the other two had been Sith...-They had ended about as badly as his peers had tried to tell him they would.

"I don't suppose you got any of that Grandmaster wisdom left in there to help me ease this whole mess up a bit, do ya? You know, considering you got me into it".

"YOU LOCKED HER IN THE ROOM!!!!"

She about fell over. Such was the shock of the revelation. It took her several moments of gasping for air to come back to the moment.

"Balun...Dashiell!"

"You locked her...in the ROOM!"

Now the whole room knew. Good thing there was no one else in the large cavernous space. The Force had great timing.

A heel spin brought an exasperate gasp and hands thrown up in despair. "Let the Togruta and the new Knight work together...it will be good for them...well done Ala...great first six months as Grand Master...you can't even train your padawan to not lock the door on spooked women he's got the hots for..." She said, mumbling to herself in a sentences that mutated into incoherent mumbling.

Centered. Ala. Be centered.

Force, save her.

The chaos of her reaction subsided. She straightened her tunic. And she turned again with an apologetic look on her face.

"I. Am. Sorry. For that."

Again, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

"Yes, Balun. It was better for you to simply not say anything about your feelings. You could have said some things that were true, but not told the entirety of it. If someone is not ready to hear something, you can easily do more damage than good with the whole truth..."

Her face lit up with an example.

"Luke walks into Old Ben's house for the first time...and Obi Wan's like...'Yo, Luke, yer dad's the enforcer for the devil'...yeah...NO..."

"I read somewhere that he supposedly killed himself while projecting himself, in combat, through the Force", Balun said, pausing a moment as he scoffed a short laugh under his breath, "He's not exactly your poster-boy example". Naturally, Balun had come across the name in his studies, both in his classes as a student and in his time in the Archives, but history had never been a huge passion of his.

As he returned the mop to the droid-bucket, Balun glanced down the long corridor and was relieved to find it now empty. Having the Grandmaster shout his name in such a way wasn't particularly a good look, especially in front of the younger generation when Balun was newly knighted and needing to earn their respect.

"Besides the fact, you'd think that knowing about this business with the cult might have been a small detail worth telling me" He turned back to look to his Master, his eyes assertive, firm. "She said she was concerned about my being attached, I figured she had sensed how I felt. Picked up on it along the way, not speaking generically," he added, elaborating on his feelings at the time.

Attachment was an integral part of life, especially for Jedi. You needed some form of attachment to life in order to feel strongly enough to risk your own in order to defend others. You needed to believe in the Force to give up everything in service to it. Despite what most people thought, the bygone era of the ancient Jedi Order's teachings did not leave them void of emotion or sentiment. Hell, for Balun, he had his family, the Dashiells, and he cared for people like his Master Ala Quin Ala Quin -- even when she yelled at him in such ways. He had a Son, naturally, attachment was everyday life for him.

"Kark..." He swore under his breath, moving to the open aperture, looking out across the view of Theed City from the higher seat of the Temple. He knew he had a hell of a fight ahead of him, but Cerys was still someone he cared about, regardless of how deep those feelings ran. He had made an Oath when Ala had knighted him, putting them both in an awkward position, certainly, but he could have declined it. The blame wasn't his master's. She had given him an opportunity, and he had accepted it. That was, at least, what he was trying to remind himself presently.

"Well, I chit the bed. Suppose I gotta figure how best to clean up the mess".

"Yeah! And you think you would start with...'tell me a bit about yourself'...and not...'hey, I crush on you so bad but let's ignore that...by the way the DOOR'S LOCKED,'" Ala said before clipping Balun on the ear again with a swipe of her hand.

Hands on hips, Ala could not help but laugh at Balun's moments of realization. "Karkin' kark karkers...indeed," she said, in one of the only ties Balun would have ever heard swear.

With pursed lips, Ala approached her padawan...her friend...and put a hand on each of his arms. "Balun. You are a good man. Granted...this was a royal stuff up...but I do believe in you. Two things are necessary for you when it comes to working with Cerys. Don't try too hard. And don't try to be her teacher. Be her shepherd. She will learn more...and she will like you more."

With a pat on his arm, she released him. "For what it's worth...I think you two have a future...and not just as master and apprentice. Just...stop trying so hard...just be."

Crossing his arms over his chest, Balun inhaled deeply, slowly, before letting a sigh of resignation escape him. Though she had flicked at his ears like he were a youngling, he was glad for her patience with him. He was listening, and her words were difficult to argue with. Once again, it seemed that the pressure he placed on himself had left him blind to the obvious: starting with the basics, not relying on his past history with Cerys Dyn Cerys Dyn as if it were an assurance she would see his good intentions for what they were.

"I suppose..." He frowned as he began to reply, resenting the fact that he was having to speak of his deeper emotions and insecurities; "I have been trying too hard to be better than I was as a Padawan. Living up to the role of a Jedi Knight, embracing the Order and the Path, shirking the Rogue Jedi nonsense I used to cling to. No more bending rules. Trying to be more mature, more stable and responsible," he expressed, speaking as much to himself as he was to his Master.

"It's not... Impossible that the pressure I'm putting on myself is also being placed on Cerys". Sometimes it seemed like Balun could be such a fool, even when he thought he had things together...Perhaps that was even when he was most at risk of royally screwing up somehow. He had been trying so hard of late to live up to the mantle of Jedi, to prove to others that he not only earned his place but deserved it too. Oftentimes, he felt he had something to prove; the problem was that there was no greater critic than himself.

"I can't allow myself to think of "a future" with her beyond our apprenticeship, and hopefully what will become a trusted friendship one day. You were right when you said neither of us were ready".

Fighting back tears, born of affection for her former Padawan, Ala pursed her lips and put her hand to her mouth. It was best now, just to listen and observe as things dawned on him. She was glad that her unorthodox approach to dealing with matters such as this had not been dismissed. It was one of the many things she loved Balun for.

"There..."

She choked back some tears before continuing.

"There...is a couple of reports of pickpockets in the morning market on the outskirts of Theed's commercial district. Perhaps you should take her along and just see how a simple investigation plays out? It is not a mission of massive importance...except for the vendors of course...and try the jam filled pastries and Jano's cart...they are amazing."

The notion of Cerys and himself being sent into the City in search of petty criminals would have felt beneath them to Balun in the past, but pacing himself with regards to his Padawan's training was needed here, and the time outside of Shiraya's Sanctuary might do his Togruta counterpart some good. Being told that she was on the bench for the six months likely hadn't motivated her much at all, relegated to training under a Master she didn't want and probably didn't need. Truth be told, the distraction would also be beneficial to Balun, who had been devoting a great deal of his time in the temple to Meditation while his Son attended lessons with the other younglings, learning from experienced Knights and Masters.

"Perhaps having an assignment will provide her with something to aim for", Balun nodded slightly in agreement. "Put us on it, and I'll debrief you when we've completed the task. It'll be interesting to see how Cerys is towards me in the field; the task itself, I've little doubt she's capable of seeing through".

Cerys Dyn Cerys Dyn was as physically capable a fighter as Balun was. Where she lacked strength compared to him, she made up for it in agility. She had a sharp mind when she could channel her concentration to a task, and she'd been taught a wealth of knowledge under the Jedi Order's curriculum. In so many ways, she was on par with Balun's own capability as a Jedi and capacity to serve the Galaxy. The main thing that seemed to have held her back was her psyche, evidently straining to adapt to an Order estranged from her first mentor's teachings.

Balun turned back to glance at Ala Quin Ala Quin studiously, unable to wonder whether or not she had seen something in their pairing or if it truly was just an impulsive stab in the dark at the time. Balun had been fortunate to truly get to know his Master before her rise to the rank of Grandmaster, the two of them working together as Master and Padawan. If it hadn't been for Ala, perhaps Balun might still have been working on his own, roaming the Galaxy more akin to mercenary work, albeit with a loose following of the Jedi principles. Sometimes, however, she still managed to surprise the hell out of him, such as the clear emotion written across her face in the moment.

"I hope you don't come to regret your confidence in me", he remarked, offering her a half-smirk and chuckling in expense of himself. Despite the pessimistic comment, he truly hoped never to let her down for the faith she had placed in him over the years. There were few people in the Galaxy that Balun truly felt believed in him, and his Master had always been one of those people.
