  Born into the seedy underbelly of Coruscant's sublevels, there was every likelihood that Ben Thano was going to grow up into a life of crime, drawn into such a life simply by his circumstances and his surroundings. Growing up in a family sorely lacking in credits and in a place that lacked for opportunities, Ben is certainly a story of the exception rather than the norm. Spending much of his youth surrounded by crime, Ben made every effort he could to protect himself, his family and his friends from criminal elements, and grew to be fairly independent from a young age, though his willingness to stand up to local gangsters and loan sharks earned him a fair share of beatings, along with a few long stretches of time spent in hiding or on the run.
  
  By the age of twenty, Ben had attracted a little too much attention from such groups for his own good, however. After his parents had fallen into debt with a particular loan shark, Ben's feuding with the man had led to an outright conflict, and one of the shark's enforcers dead in a street. With a hit called on him, Ben found a guardian angel in an Alliance Marshal who had taken an interest in the same Loan Shark Ben had been feuding with. In return for his help to take the man down, Ben was offered an escape from the sublevels for both himself and his family - as well as a future.
  
  It took a year of investigation and dangerous work, but eventually the Marshals managed to arrest the Loan Shark and his associates with Ben's help - and Ben was welcomed into the Marshals with open arms for his efforts. Moving to the upper levels with his parents, Ben still found himself on the lower rungs of Coruscanti society for many years, helping his parents scrape by while saving little of his pay for himself, working overtime and taking on an excess of investigations in the bustling cityscape of Coruscant.
  
  Eventually, Ben's ongoing dedication and hard work did not go unnoticed, however. After a particularly long assignment investigating bribery and corruption in the Senate, Ben was called in for a rather mysterious meeting with his superior. The meeting in question turned out to be a ruse - instead, an offer was given for Ben to join the ranks of the Strategic Intelligence Agency as a member of its Diplomatic Services Division. Seeing an opportunity to go beyond his station, and better support both himself and the parents he had spent his life trying to help, Ben took the offer without hesitation.
