DESCRIPTION
The Mk3 Basilisk War Droid, or Bes'uliik Droid, is the result of technological advancements following the Netherworld Crisis. Technology has made great leaps and bounds in many fields since the end of the Gulag Plague, technology continues to move forward. With the new Crusade of Mand'alor Ra Vizsla underway, a new mount for his armies was considered necessary for the modern Mandalorians to use in warfare. The first wave were produced from the Kashyyyk shipyards and factories that were stolen by the Mandalorians, using it like a plant so as not to sacrifice production elsewhere.

Based off the ancient Mk1 and the pre-Netherworld Crisis Mk2, the Mk3 utilizes similar structure and look, as we build. There are few changes in weaponry, the removal of space mines as key among them. The Minelayer is replaced by a modular equipment bay within the armor of the droid. This can be used to fit an internal Ysalamiri cage, complete with life support for the little creature, turning the droid into a mobile Ysalamiri platform, an Individual Field Disruptor for bypassing planetary, theater, or other shields the droid may encounter though it is unable to operate its shield at the same time, utilizing the Black Smoke Screamer Generator as a fear weapon against their opponents, or a more traditional single bomb ordnance bay.

The Shockwave Generator Rods, classic from the original designs, are the primary weaponry of the droid. Complementing these are a pair of Modular weapon mounts capable of supporting Laser Cannons, Maser Cannons, Particle Beam Cannons, Ion Cannons, or Mass Drivers of the roughly the same firepower providing a pilot and droid a feel for individuality and allowing them to prepare for specific roles while keeping the output roughly the same from one droid to another. For heavy weapons the droid mounts a pair of powerful, short range Pulse-wave Cannons and a pair of flex-tube warhead launchers. Other weapons include beskar vibro-claws able to be retracted from the droid's hands, combined with powerful servos and reactive augmented grip circuitry similar to a crushgaunt, allow it to shred through vehicle armor and pull them apart piece by piece. Though fearsome in close combat, it is fairly slow on the ground, swiping and grabbing at its victims.

In terms of performance, the Mk3 see's increases in acceleration and maneuvering over its predecessors. Using SLAM engines, the droid can hit its top speed much faster than previous models, and combined with KV807-A maneuvering thrusters, the Basilisk can make tight turns, rotate on a three dimensional axis, and use the maneuvering fins on its tail to wrap around corners. The Mk3 Droid Brain is buried in the chest cavity of the droid, heavily protected by beskar armoring. It is heuristic, meaning that it can learn, develop a unique personality, remember a rider and their tendencies, and adapt to situations it has been in before. It learns by doing, not just a set of pre-programmed commands, which makes it interesting. Not only will a droid develop a bond with an individual, but it can develop strategies and tactics on its own for how to defeat an opponent it commonly encounters. Its intelligence and combat style is likened to a pack predator, very intelligent and cunning, smart enough to recognize weakspots and attack them, and to use different weaponry against different types of enemies. Finally, there is the internal redundancies and self-repair systems embedded into the droid. Using a de-centralized servo system, bisections, amputations, even beheadings do not render the droid incapacitated, merely reducing its combat efficiency. Rumors of droids with only a single limb operational attempting to fend off attackers have been heard. Secondly, the droid has a group of Phylactery Scarab droids to repair it and piece it back together should it be disabled. There are some injuries they cannot repair, but they can fix armor, amputations, and other major damage given enough time.

Defensively, the Mk3 is on par with its predecessors, though having advantages of technology. First, rather than a deflector shield, the Mk3 uses a point of impact Particle shield to defend itself from solid slugs. Being point of impact, it does not have to lower in order to be fired out of, and only noticeable in the instant it is to be struck by on incoming projectile. The energy field activates, shielding the mount and rider, only fractions of a second before and after it is attacked. This has the benefit of conserving energy, allowing it to be sustained for much longer. This does have a detriment however, as its only a particle shield, which means blasters and lasers pass through unabated. To compensate for these weakness in the shield, the beskar armor of the Mk3 has been lined and coated with a Laser-Reflective armor, causing blaster, laser, and other energy weapons like Charrics and rippers, to ricochet off the droid, often back towards the shooter. Firing in the same spot several times can cause the Laser Reflective coating to heat and lose its reflective properties, the use of flame weaponry is good to disable this ability as the coating has a much lower melting point than beskar itself. The model uses a cap drain to provide minor resistance to ion and EMP weaponry, as well as an Ion buffer and agrinium, which while not rendering them useless, puts ion weaponry on par with other energy weaponry in terms of disabling the droid.

Strengths:
  • Beast: The Basilisk War Droid is a beskar armored, particle shielded, laser reflective Son of a Gun with a terrifying array of weaponry and devastating armaments. Its claws can tear apart vehicles, its weapons can go toe to toe with even good starfighters, and its own defensive capabilities make it a serious threat. It also learns and is loyal like a beast or predatory animal allowing them to adapt to common strategies they encounter.
  • It Will Not Die!: Beskar Armor, just like in the old days, makes it tough to actually drop, and even when you do, it might get back up due to self-repair systems and phylactery droids. Ion weaponry is no more effective against it than blaster weaponry due to its agrinium laced hull and wire shielding, cap drain, and Ion buffer.
  • Modular: The Basilisk can be a mobile Ysalamiri Cage, carry a single proton bomb, slip through planetary and theater shielding, or carry a Black Smoke Screamer Generator, depending on the rider's wants. In addition its laser cannons can be replaced with Maser Cannons, Ion Cannons, Mass Drivers, or Particle Beam Cannons depending on the rider and the mission.
Weaknesses:
  • Open-Topped: Literally the pilot is in a saddle with minimal protection. If the point of Impact shield doesn't stop it, it doesn't get stopped.
  • Particle Shield Only: It doesn't have a Ray shield since the Droid has Laer Reflective Beskar Armor, it just doesn't need it, but that doesn't help the pilot.
  • Not True Space Travel: The depths of space is not the arena the Mk3 was made for, it can handle re-entry just like any other Basilisk, but lacking an etheric rudder it can't maneuver well outside of atmosphere.
  • Kill it with Fire: Intense heat applied to the armor interferes with the reflective coating until it can be repaired in a shop.
  • The Monster Sleeps: While difficult to take down, its not impossible. Shots up the engines when flying cause internal detonation, the joints aren't made of solid beskar and are thus vulnerable, and like all droids, it relies on the brain to keep functioning and that cannot be repaired.
Special Features:
  • Beskar Armor
  • Laser-Reflective Coating
  • Modular Weapons
  • Modular Equipment
  • Self-Repair

I expected to have to hit things with a hammer, but it's remarkably faithful to the original. More of a fleshing out than an upgrade, for the most part. Throw in 55 posts of dev and I don't see any issues here.
