  • [SIZE=9pt]Varying Speed: Depending on the mode assigned to the weapon, the Aton is capable of altering its fire rate from slow to fast depending on the charge which is allowed to build up in the railgun firing mechanism.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=9pt]The Aton’s development was a direct by-product of Locke and Key Mechanic’s research and development into the Mitra Plasma Railgun. While the Mitra was developed specifically to engage opponents at long-range the technology behind it didn’t necessarily require that it be used to engage at longer ranges. They asked the question, what if we used it at shorter ranges?[/SIZE]

[SIZE=9pt]The technology existed, all that was needed was the formation of a magnetic bottle into which plasma could be funnelled and the shorter range required less in the way of sustainability. The magnetic bottles didn’t have to last so long, so they could be produced faster, That trade-off is at the core of the variable firing rate of the Aton, it can trade its range of attack for an increase in its speed of firing.
