Intent: A portable navicomputer.
Development Thread: None
Manufacturer: Theed Palace Space Vessel Engineering Corps
Model: Astrolabe Portable Starmap
Affiliation: Closed Market, Theed Hangar, Government of Naboo, Galactic Alliance
Modularity: Compatible with encrypted modules holding restricted or secret navigational data. Can be fitted to/included in an instrumentation panel or a bracer, such as in Mandalorian armour.
Production: Mass-produced
Material: Duraplast, electronics
Strengths:
 • The portable navicomputer allows computation of hyperspace jumps in vessels (e.g. astromech-dependent starfighters) which have hyperdrives but no navicomputers.
 • The self-contained Astrolabe unit allows computation of transit while minimizing contact between secret navigational data and a ship’s systems.
 • For secure updates, the Astrolabe can switch between a constant HoloNet connection, a preset series of approved secure connections, or an insulated mode requiring hard contact.
Weaknesses:
 • Limited computational power prevents the Astrolabe from calculating very-long-range trips (~20,000 light-years or more) unless in segments.
 • Best practice for security is to keep the Astrolabe unconnected to the ship’s hyperdrive, requiring manual transcription of numbers and thus increased calculation time in some circumstances.
 • Best practice for security is to use the insulated mode, requiring manual hard-contact data updates and risking route obsolescence.
Description: Centuries ago, handheld portable navicomputers were used by dedicated explorers. Their use and manufacture fell out of vogue or were lost during the Dark Age. Theed Hangar’s Astrolabe is perhaps the first such machine in the modern era. The Astrolabe is a pocket-sized, handheld tablet which is compatible with a variety of standard modular mounts. Like most miniature portable navicomputers of old, it contains all publicly available hyperspace and realspace routes in the galaxy. It can also include secure modules which hold proprietary, secret routes. Rugged but graceful in design, the Astrolabe allows your average snubfighter or cheap freighter to cross the galaxy without relying on the handful of routes held by an astromech. It can also serve as a decent navicomputer all by itself.

Primary Source: ‘Microaxial Starmapper Handheld Navicomputer’ from Star Wars: Force and Destiny: Savage Spirits.

“Microaxial LLC is a relatively small technology firm from the Core Worlds region that specializes in navicomputers and navigational aids. While it is known primarily as a producer of starfighter navicomputers, such as the powerful LpM-549 used on the Alliance’s B-wing heavy attack fighters, it also produces a number of other navigation-related products. Microaxial’s products have a reputation as rugged, reliable, and easy to maintain, a reputation the company works very hard to maintain through excellent manufacturing and service.

“The Starmapper is a small, dedicated-use datapad designed to assist a starships navigator in plotting courses and performing the tricky math of hyperspace navigation. Within its prodigious memory, the Starmapper contains hyperspace and realspace maps of every known region of the galaxy. These maps are annotated and well organized, allowing a user to find a given map or star chart in an instant. Through its permanent connection to the galactic HoloNet, the Starmapper constantly upgrades its maps and charts as changes are made by the Imperial Survey Corps and by various regional and planetary survey bureaus. In addition, a Starmapper user can make changes to an existing chart and upload these changes to the HoloNet, from which other users can retrieve them and change their charts accordingly. This ensures that Starmapper users always have the latest navigational data available to them.”
