Argent Class Carrier

Affiliation: Silver Sanctum Coalition
Manufacturer: Firemane Industries and Technology
Model: SSC-H2a
Modularity: Launch and hanger bays can be configured with dropships, vehicles and equipment for a ground landing.
Production: Mass
Material: Standard ship materials
Classification: Carrier Cruiser
Length: 800 metres
Width: 250 metres
Height: 80 metres

Armament: 55/0/160
  • 4 x turbolaser batteries (270 degree arc forwards)(16CG)
  • 2 x ion cannon batteries (270 degree arc forwards)(8CG)
  • 32 x fast mount turbolasers (360 degree arc)(32CG)
  • 40 x point defence lasers (360 degree arc)(40DG)
  • 80 x quad laser cannons (360 degree arc)(80DG)
  • 80 x flak cannons (360 degree arc)(80DG)

Armament Score: 2
Vs. Capital/Escort Ships: 2
Vs. Attack Craft: 16
Defence Score: 10

Hangar:
  • 6 squadrons. Usually this is 2 interceptor, 3 fighter, 1 bomber, but other tactical needs can be considered.
  • Alternatively the attack craft can be replaced by 6 squadrons of gunships and/or transports.

Special Features:
  • Able to shift power from engines to shields (up to +2 defence at a cost of +4 speed/agility). Cannot be used when launching or recalling attack craft.

Manoeuvrability Rating: 14
Speed Rating: 13
Hyperdrive Class: 1

Strengths:
  • The Swarm. Able to launch up to 72 attack craft, the Argent is a very useful carrier used in support of more aggressive Coalition ships.
  • Flak Support. With scores of defence guns scattered over the hull, the Argent is a bastion against any attack craft which tries to get close. The sheer hail of fire it can unleash at various ranges will make most attack craft rethink getting close.
Weaknesses:
  • Carrier. Carriers are not meant for close range fighting against capital ships. Any such engagement will go very poorly for the Argent.
  • Large Target. With a broad body as well as a long profile, the Argent is not difficult to target.

Description:

Designed to fulfil a missing dedicated carrier role in the Coalition Fleet, the Argent is designed for support work. Admiral Gould, having seen that the attack craft contingents on the existing Coalition vessels were insufficient, decided to commission a dedicated carrier vessel for the role. Rather than give over a star destroyer sized hull to the role, she decided on a cruiser, which would give it a better chance of evading danger.

The Argent would also give the Coalition a ship which could be converted into a landing craft. If the attack craft were removed an entire division could be carried within its hull, allowing an invasion or relief operation to proceed without many smaller ships.

Although power existed to equip more capital guns, Gould was happy to increase defence guns and make the ship a little smaller. A carrier, even with a full load of capital guns, cannot face off with a capital ship, and Gould did not even want it to try. Thus, although extremely well defended against attack craft, it cannot stand long against ships of similar or larger size for long at all.

The Argent is a fairly conventional carrier, providing backup for larger Coalition vessels.

Development Thread: N/A
Intent: To create a carrier to support the Coalition Fleet. The new template offers a great deal more flexibility when it comes to carriers, and so this ship is pretty much a standard rear echelon carrier. Its ability to launch attack craft is moderated by its weak capital gun arsenal and fragile hull if directly engaged.
Who Can Use This: Firemane, Silver Sanctum Coalition

Armament is one rating for both not broken down into separate fields. So is the Armament rating of the ship 2? standard for a cruiser carrier is 4 and with the weapons load out 2 seems about right. If you want this to reflect more anti-fighter capabilities up the defense a couple points. You have swapped capital weapons for defensive weapons so that's what I would suggest. make the Defense a 12 and armament 2 to show it has more defensive weapons.

Your ship is at 80% the max size and normally would only be allowed 5 squadrons But since this is light armament 6 squadrons is fine.

This is not something we can do. You can make the speed slower and give it a better defense but to put this down in stats is not possible. Why? well lets say someone did this same thing to a ship that had defense 16. this would boost it to def 19 and be a way that person could get around doing development for defense over 16. MOst if not all of us fleet people know this is something that is possible and in sim will not say a word when power is redirected from engines to shielding. It is just putting it in the stats makes it a way of getting around development . WHile your ship does not fit this example consider a ship that is defense 16 which is already faster than it is supposed to be, trading out something it has already been compensated against. The ship is already 2 faster than the standard so it would get a +3 def buff for a -1 speed basically.

So please remove the swap out part.

as I said above this speed is faster than standard. But since the armament is low the -2 speed is fine.

The template strongly implies that the armament rating relates to how good it is with capital guns. Giving it a rating of 2 is the 'rating', but as a comparative note, listing its defence gun strength has been allowed before. I've done other submissions where further differentiation has been approved, so long as I made clear what is the official rating.

It does make the ship significantly easier to hit by making it slower and more cumbersome. Thus, it should balance out somewhat. Would it help if I clarified it cannot fire whilst using this stance, and it had limited duration?

Thank you for your assistance.

OK this is fine just list a Armament rating of 2 the you can break it down into a capital and anti attack craft also below that. Just need "Armament Rating: 2"

oh nothing that bad. The issue is with the ability to slide the rating beyond the listed specifications. Also I am not sure speed and defense would directly correlate equally one for one. Defense is more than the shielding it is the armor the defensive weapons the shielding the countermeasures so on so forth.

ALso the ship has had the speed increased by 2 over the example for cruiser carriers so your really not slowing it much for the def buff. I would much rather you just make the DEF. more in the stats than have it on a slide. But i get the idea, but Like I said this is something ships can do anyway and unless this is an ability that is beyond the standard ability of a ship to bypass power from one system to another, which it would be if it was to a degree of +3, Then it doesn't really need this.

So if this is an aspect you just really want to keep how about making it a 2 for 1. -4 speed for +2 Defense. Or -6 speed for +3 defense. This way you are paying a cost rather than just swapping out equally. Like I said this could push a ship past the development line on ships with higher defense ratings so I feel it should cost something. Or just take this part out and up the defense of the ship to 14, give it an advanced shielding strength, and explain it in the description. In the end if we allow a working slide on stats in the subscription it will break down the entire reasoning for the stats at all.
