Intent:To create a new type of ammunition for the use with the existing MkI Bolter. Rather than creating a grenade like effect, this weapon is designed to penetrate personal armoured targets with ease, but not be useful for suppression or bombardment. In effect it is similar to a HEAT shell on Earth, miniaturised and reduced to a rifle round.
Development Thread:If necessary, the http://starwarsrp.net/topic/3179-mk-i-omega-boltgun-special-ammunition bolters which fire them are already approved
Manufacturer: Firemane Industries and Technology
Model: APE Boltgun Ammunition
Affiliation: Firemane Industries & Technology, closed market to approved buyers only.
Modularity:No
Production:Mass-Production
Material:Durasteel casing, fuse, high explosive, copper core.
Classification: Boltgun/slugthrower ammunition.
Size: Handheld
Length: 45m long by 30mm wide.
Weight: 100 grams
Ammunition Type: Itself
Ammunition Capacity: 10 round magazines.
Effective Range: 500m. Unlike the regular rounds the APE has no minimum range.
Rate of Fire: Semi-automatic. 60 rounds/minute
Special Features:

Devastating vs a single target. Head on impact will penetrate most armour Quality 7 or less.
Uses Munroe effect to inject lethal metal fragments at hypersonic speeds – 2-3km/sec for a short period.
Fired by the MkI boltgun.
No minimum range.

Description:
The MkI and II boltguns proved to be exceptionally reliable and successful weapons. They have been used by the Protectorate and especially by Firemane and the Eldorai to great effect. These weapons had a key drawback though; at close range they could not fire their traditional explosive bolts, and the fiddling to load other ammunition was often fatal.
With this in mind a Mk3 weapon was planned, but it was soon decided that a whole new rifle was unnecessary, just a new type of ammunition was required. Making use of shaped charges, and what would be called the Munroe Effect on Earth, the explosive bolt was redone. Key research here had been done in the construction of the Hold-OutBolter, so that now a new bolt was ready.
Now, rather than exploding in a wide cloud of shrapnel, all the explosive energy was directed forward into the impact. That impact, triggered by a sensor which was armed by firing the bolt, would trigger the payload on any significant impact. The result of the triggering is to deliver a stream of hypersonic metal particles into the impact site, piercing it and tearing the target apart from the inside. A demonstration of this is shown below.

<img alt="AT-HEAT.jpg" src="http://www.flamesofwar.com/Portals/0/all_images/weapons/AT-HEAT.jpg"/>

The obvious strengths of this is that there is no minimum range for this shot and a foot target hit by the shot will suffer devastating damage to the location impacted. An unarmoured target will be literally torn apart from the inside as the spray of metal particles penetrates and exits the body like a dum-dum round. An armoured target, if the armour is penetrated, will likewise be torn to pieces, perhaps even worse as the payload will not be able to exit the other side and will bounce back. Against thin cover, a shot would be able to penetrate and distribute its payload on the other side, possibly fatally surprising the enemy who thought themselves safe.

As much as this horrific ammunition is fearsome, it has clear weaknesses.
Firstly, it must hit the target as there is no area of effect. With the slow fire rate and limited ammunition capacity, this makes the Mk3 round more of a sniping than an assault weapon than the MkI ammunition.
Second, the bolt has no penetration abilities against military vehicles, tanks or walkers. The bolt is simply too small to penetrate heavy armour sufficiently.
Third, any armour of quality 8 or higher is protected from single shots on the strongest areas. A single shot will cause varying degrees of damage, and multiple hits in the same area will cause penetration. Additionally some metals such as Phrik and Terentarek leather due to their special properties are much better at resisting damage of this type, and defend as if they have quality 2 higher than usual.
Fourth, a target wearing multiple layers of protection or ablative armour is likely to be much more likely to resist a bolt than a target wearing a single type of armour. This also applies to energy shields which can resist the impact easier than a regular bolt.
Finally, whilst one of the MkI boltgun’s main advantages is its ability to resist Force users, the APE is slightly less adapt. As the weapon directs its power forward and its power is reduced exponentially the further from the target it detonates, a skilled Force user could create a shield which causes them to detonate prematurely. In this case, the spray of supersonic metal could still be dangerous, but rarely fatal at ranges over a metre.

Overall the APE bolt is a powerful addition to the arsenal, but like all the other bolt types, it must be used in conjunction with other ammunition types and cannot be relied on solely.
