OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To flesh out Lao-mon and give myself nightmares.
  • Canon: N/A
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Links: Shi'ido
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Andesite
  • Designation: Non-sentient
  • Origins: Lao-mon
  • Average Lifespan: 6 standard months
  • Estimated Population: Rare (currently being hunted to extinction in some areas)
  • Description: Looking like a cross between a hydra and a wasp, Andesites are classified as insects despite their reptilian traits. Their defining features are their five "heads" (actually just tentacles with mouths), barbed stinger tails, and large transparent wings.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Breathes: Type I
  • Average Height of Adults: 30 cm (11.8 in)
  • Average Length of Adults: N/A
  • Skin color: Scales are typically green or brown, with red or white "fins" and a white underbelly.
  • Hair color: N/A
  • Distinctions: Only male Andesites have visible white coloration on their bodies. Female Andesites are typically brown and green, affording them a degree of camouflage.
  • Races: N/A
  • Force Sensitivity: Non-Sensitive
Strengths:
  • Flying Monstrosity: It's a flying snake with dragonfly wings, a barbed stinger, lobster legs, and up to five tentacles sprouting from its head, each one ringed with jagged teeth. Just looking at it is enough to trigger the fight-or-flight response in a Shi'ido.
  • Stinger: The barbed stinger at the end of the Andesite's tail can tear through flesh, leaving painful wounds that are vulnerable to infection.
  • Regeneration: Of all the creatures on Lao-mon that could share in the Shi'ido's regeneration, why did it have to be these guys? If you cut off an Andesite limb, it will grow back within a few hours.
Weaknesses:
  • Myopic: Andesite eyes are located on its main body, close to the brain, and their range of vision is limited compared to the ability of its tentacles to swivel and strike at targets. They are also near-sighted, unable to see beyond a distance of about 15 meters on average.
  • Diurnal: Due to their poor vision, Andesites are vulnerable in darkness and avoid hunting at night.
CULTURE
  • Diet: Carnivore; feed on live or rotting prey from a variety of species.
  • Communication: Pheromones; communication is limited to attracting mates, marking territory, and warning each other of danger.
  • Technology level: N/A
  • Religion/Beliefs: N/A
  • General behavior: Andesites are solitary creatures. Adult Andesites spend most of their time hunting; they are voracious meat-eaters always on the lookout for prey. They have been observed to engage in warfare with other Andesites, fighting over food, mates, and territory. After having mated, the females have a nasty habit of stinging their prey in order to incapacitate them and then laying their eggs on them.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Andesites are pests, pure and simple. They differ from common insects on other worlds only in that they are very large and can prey on sentient species. Most Shi'ido have no qualms against killing them and some even favor complete extermination of the vermin, despite the protests of environmental activists. In many areas they are considered a danger to the public health and laws have been passed which encourage citizens to hunt and kill them as a "public service", with rewards including things like tax deductions.
