Private Among the Fog and Ruin

Shade remained still in the copilot's seat, eyes tracking the quiet drift of sensor data rather than the stars beyond the viewport. With the transponder dark and the ship riding momentum alone, there was nothing left for her to do but watch patterns resolve themselves. She trusted silence when it was earned.

"At this point," she said after a moment, her voice low and even, "every additional minute works in our favor rather than theirs. Search behavior tends to fragment once certainty is lost."

She tilted her head slightly, considering the absence of signals more than their presence.

"They will begin prioritizing false positives," Shade continued. "Background noise. Civilian traffic. Anything that lets them believe the anomaly resolved itself without intervention."

Her gaze shifted briefly to Crosten, not to guide him, but to acknowledge the care he had already taken.

"You have given them just enough information to move on," she said. "And not enough to question why."

The ship continued its silent glide, unremarkable against the void.

"Once they commit elsewhere," Shade added quietly, "this stops being a pursuit and becomes a footnote."

She settled back, composed, patient, content to let his timing decide the rest.
