DESCRIPTION
The Railgun. It has existed for thousands of years and been used as the basis for dozens of weapons, armament for thousands of ships and tanks, and is often considered the best long range anti-tank weapon on the ground. ArmaTech has developed a trio of Railguns, based off the ancient technology made common during the Great Galactic War. The Railguns are large, and have the power requirements of Four laser cannons that would normally be fitted onto a Starfighter, but feature phenomenal firepower and enhanced range over standard starfighter weaponry. The immense power and range of the weapons comes from the pair of magnetic accelerator rods in the weapon system, using Lorentz forces to accelerate munitions and propel them across vast distances.

There are several things true of all the 701 series Railguns. First, all require three seconds of charge time to fire at full power, which begins upon trigger press and fires upon trigger release. This greatly limits their close range ability as they are delayed in firing against fast moving, agile close range ships. Even if fired before full charge, the weapons are still very slow, and firing prior to full charge sacrifices the increased range and strength of the projectile, firing with the same power and range as a standard laser cannon. They come in three types, Slug, Ion, and Plasma.

Slug is more easily deflected by shields, transferring less than half its punch through before spinning off into the void or disintegrating on impact, but being a 40mm tungsten carbide rod magnetically accelerated to incredible speeds, it causes much greater damage to hulls and space frames, much more likely to pierce unusually thick or durable armor plating.

Ion is the opposite, being almost twice times as effective against shields but having very little effect against hulls, if any. Ion Railguns have been known to sometimes cause distortions in sensor and targeting equipment in starfighters, bombers, gunships, and even smaller corvettes that do take hull damage from the weapon.

Plasma Railguns are balanced, doing about equal damage to shields and hulls with a hyper-accelerated super-heated plasma charge fired from the weapon.

Strengths:
  • Armor Piercing: The Slug variant is adept at carving up armor plating of enemy ships, being considered roughly twice as effective against hulls, armor, and space frames.
  • Shield Cutter: The Ion variant is brutal when affecting shields, quickly overloading and disabling them.
  • High Power: All three variants are high powered with enhanced range over normal starfighter weapons, requiring the same space and power of four starfighter weapons.
Weaknesses:
  • Shields: The Slug variant has trouble cutting through shields, and is more easily sent spinning off into space or disintegrated on impact when compared to the plasma variant.
  • Armor: The Ion variant causes little to no damage to ship armor or hulls, more apt at cutting through shields and causing electronic and sensor disruptions
  • Size: The Railguns are very large and require a great deal of space and power to operate.
  • Rate of Fire: For a Starfighter weapon, the rate of fire is abysmally low, making it almost useless as a close range weapon.
Special Features:
  • Long Range
  • High Power
  • Charge Up Time
  • Slug (roughly x2 Hull, x0.5 Shields)
  • Ion (roughly x2 Shields, x0.5 Hull)
  • Count as 4 Weapons
