A Girl's Best Friend...

Ibaris Varanin

Guest
Location: Cardea Medical Centre
Timespan: Prior to the death of Ashin Varanin at the Invasion of Lujo

He was her first real friend, her first companion and protector outside of her parents, and her first pet, all rolled into one. A gift, tying her all the way back to when she was all but five years old, from a man she had called Uncle Valik; one of many figures from her childhood that had vanished or died - either way, gone, to the extent of her knowledge. Adas was a loyal one, a fierce one, and his fifteenth year had come and passed with no indications of him slowing down, his sixteenth year already well in swing. Already he had passed the outlier lifespan mark of the average domesticated dog, and to her that was a cause for concern. It wasn't a matter of if, but a matter of when, and that when was an unknown.

She had known, with Adas being her protector, that he could be taken from her unexpectedly in doing his duty, but so many years and he was still here. The unknown wasn't often a cause for fear, by virtue of the conditions surrounding approximately three-quarters of her own life - growing up in the Unknown Regions, et al - but Adas was a constant, a finite one, and she couldn't envision a life without him. So she did what she knew best, and began to research.

She started with square one: what was Adas made of? She was well aware that he was a creation, and had been able to see some markers of indication for some other species she had come across in her years of continuing self-directed studies, but that said nothing of how he was put together, or if there was anything else she hadn't seen. She spent more time than usual watching the canine ever since this worry of hers became action, but nothing else had been apparent... which brought her here, to the Cardea Medical Centre, orbiting Sullust.

Samples had been sent on ahead weeks prior to her arrival, for DNA testing and profiling, tasks for which the Peregrine was as ill-equipped as she was. She had a fair idea of what was involved, despite that. She was, for obvious and not-so-obvious reasons, anxious, yet also impatient. There was also the ever-persistent wish that she could just call the creator up, ask, and pick his brain, but some part of her relished chasing down answers and extrapolating what comes next, herself. Next to her, another constant companion sat, and she furtively glanced at him, before slipping her fingers around the edge of his nearest hand while waiting for someone from the lab to come give and explain the results.

"Thank you for never saying that Adas is 'just a dog'," she said, "I'd probably have tried to wring your neck if you did," she continued, a wane smile stretching her lips from the small bunch they became with thought, "or something."

This girl's best friend never had, and never would be precious stones.

A lot had been going on, mostly stuff that I couldn’t wrap my brain around. Ibaris had given me tasks like ‘watch Adas do this, watch Adas doing that, Liam why does Adas have pizza on his face?!’ To be hoenst about the pizza, Adas and I have been working on a two man show to take on the road when Ibaris is busy locking herself away in the training room. I remembered quietly my first time meeting the dude, of course Ibaris didn’t warn me until the last minute about the dog. We didn’t get off to a great start, but neither did Ibaris and I.

Still I worked my magic and my charm and eventually won them both over. What helped with Adas was, of course his doggy treats. Having a few of those in my pocket ensured a beautiful and wonderful transition phase. We had become quite the trio and now that it was becoming obvious that the guy was getting old, I could sense it from Ibaris that she was worried or something along those lines. I don’t have the Force so I’m just taking shots in the dark.

Sitting there in the medical center, I could feel my nose have something a bit hard in it. The sudden urge to dig in my nose started to win over my attention until Ibaris. My hand suddenly felt hers wrap around it and I looked towards her. My hand moved to wrap around hers and give it a reassuring squeeze. “Adas is my friend too Ibaris. We’ll figure this out.” I didn’t dare make a comment about her trying to strangle me, I’d honestly like to see her try and wrap her small hands around my neck. Looking around the waiting room, I frowned. “They’re taking a long time. I wish there was some sort of update even a ‘its going to be a few moments longer’”. I did my best to try and be comforting. Just be there for her, I couldn’t imagine how she was feeling.

She nodded. She couldn't quite put her finger on what had the thoughts of losing Adas running through her consciousness, but the mind came up with all sorts of things when it stole a little time to wander. "Yeah. I mean... he's still perfectly fine," she said, but she was never one to just let things happen. This was being prepared, though nothing had ever been able to prepare her for loss. Why was she doing this? What was her plan? An ounce of prevention? What could she even do to stem the tide of mortality, anyway?

She blew out a short, quiet sigh. She had never been impatient, either, "Hospitals are always like this. At least that's what I've heard..." and to a point her life had been charmed, devoid of injury, and prepared by her mother with valuable lessons in healing when her independence began taking her beyond Spencer's immediate reach. "...they can call this a 'medical centre', but it qualifies. I think."

There wasn't much to say, beyond small talk. She was focused on what they were here for, but she was glad for Liam's company. A couple minutes of silence beyond this, and one of the lab personnel was finally coming their way. It was enough, that potential for unfamiliar contact, to have Ibaris withdrawing her hand from the grasp of the Mando-born blond, and standing to greet the man.

"Miss Varanin?" he inquired, leaving the datapad in his grasp to be held by one hand, so the other could be used for shaking. "Ibaris Varanin?" he corrected, particularly after seeing her age, evident in her face, "Yes, that's me," she said, grasping his hand with her own. "A pleasure to meet the owner of the fascinating canine everyone's been talking about."

One brow rose partway; her forehead creased in the middle, just above her nose, and she withdrew her hand. She wasn't sure she liked the thought of Adas being looked at as an experiment, which was what the word 'fascinating' evoked in her mind, despite where the big, black animal came from. The lab guy cleared his throat.

"Ah, this way please, Miss Varanin," and he turned tail, perhaps a little embarrassed, heading back the way he came. Ibaris turned her head to Liam. "Well, farmboy, you coming?" And she looked to the retreating back of the man from the lab, stepping off to follow.
