When One Gun is most certainly never enough

OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
  • Classification: Flak Battery
  • Size: Small
  • Weight: Heavy
  • Ammunition Type: Explosive, Detonite
  • Ammunition Capacity: Very High
  • Effective Range: Average
  • Rate of Fire: Very High
  • Stopping Power: Low
  • Recoil: Extreme
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Small Size, allows it to be fitted to picket ships, screening craft like corvettes, structures on the ground or mid-sized vehicles like tanks.
  • Multiple small batteries create an intensive layered flak field around craft or in the atmosphere above structures, shielding them from physical threats like starfighters, missiles, bombs, torpedoes and drop pods.
  • Lower power drain and few moving parts make this a reliable weapon in most conditions, even under low or emergency power.
STRENGTHS
  • When massed. The guns form a very Effective Screen against missiles, torpedos, droids, drones, and starfighters or boarding craft. Very High Ammo capacity means the weapon can maintain that fast-firing thick screen for a long period of time. Physical objects are the target of this weapon.
  • Intensive Splash Damage, flying into this flak field is likely to score hits. These guns intend to create a short-range intensive and thick flak field in layers. Although alone they are no more than an explosive low powered slug thrower. In numbers they are formidable at their role.
  • The small size allows many to be fitted and used in tandem, on a variety of different platforms such as tanks, picket ships, capital ships or stationary firing platforms.
  • Lower power drain and few moving parts make this a reliable weapon in most conditions, even operating under minimal power.
WEAKNESSES
  • Low Armor Penetration, the individual damage output is low but constant and usually many batteries work together. Individual hits are not usually fatal to starfighters, but staying in the flak field may likely prove lethal.
  • Useless at Range. This is a short-range defensive battery firing past its own shields or into the atmosphere planetside.
  • Completely ineffective against most frigates or larger craft unless they sit at close range in the flak field for a long time to rack up many multiple hits.
  • Does nothing to stop energy weapons, ion cannons, blasters, sonic weapons, pulse weapons etc.
  • Individually very small physical projectiles might still get through the flak, but they might not just as easy.
  • Extreme recoil. The sustained rate of fire generates a lot of recoil, making this an inaccurate gun on its own. The A-EFB1 requires many firing together to achieve success.
DESCRIPTION

Directive 8G, Project Lead Goros. Codename: Flak For Effect
Project Cost: 1.21 Million Credits
Total Time to Completion: 2 Years, 9 Months and 2 Days Galactic Standard Time.

A tech at Fire For Effect once remarked that one gun was never enough, and that catchphrase stuck for many a year. Although that tech like many perished in the fun spice and cannon-filled experimentation parties the original company was known for. When the same tech's sister joined the greater Apex Holdings Umbrella corporation looking for better dental and a chance to see the other side of thirty, she remarked that one space cannon is never enough. Certain patrons agreed.

Goros the project lead was an enigmatic figure to those who knew of him. Rarely seen, his advisors did most of the legwork for him. However, after having his own frigate well and truly smashed by Nima Tann, he fronted half the credits for this particular battery himself. He wanted something visible, yet blocking vision, a loud bang yet a small and portable gun. Taking inspiration from the many flak batteries on the market Apex designed their own with these flavors and factors in mind.

Flying into a well setup flak field is dangerous, staying in one with a small craft is thought nothing short of suicidal by Apex designers. Unlike many flak cannons, this one isn't designed to have much range, it's designed as thick second skin past its own shields, blanket fired in layers. The term blanket fire is a good one, space artillery over a fixed area is another one way to visualize the end result.

Never missing a good explosion, Sere Reene herself assisted with the design of this weapon, lowering the power requirements and using her experience to reduce the weapon to its simplest form, making it a reliable gun in most conditions and under most circumstances, often able to operate even under minimal or emergency power.
