A Blackened Mind

nightmare.jpg

Nights were long in recent times. For Auron, they were plagued with a black that could only be known to few. The night was cool, but as Auron slept he sweated profusely, tossing and turning to wrestle with the unknowable hands that stretched about his person. It was an abstract black, impossible to define; something that called... and repelled. He was being pulled in every direction, unable to maintain his stability. Then an echo came. It was quiet at first, reaching far back into the furthest reaches of his mind, getting louder... louder... louder... It was a single word. A name. His name. Over and over and over again. He knew that voice... He knew it well...
"AURON. AURON. AURON!"

He woke, rising sharply in his bed. His chest hurt and his head span from hyperventilation, and the voice of his father calling him repeated over and over in his memory. Silence came for a short while, and Auron looked out into the still blackness of his room, slowing his breathing as he did so. But before he could bring his mind to the next thought, a scream of unfathomable, inhuman noise surrounded him, breaking the barrier of sound and vision. Then he fell.

Black and noise danced wildly around him as he lost all sense of strength and self, falling further into a pit of unknowable madness, as voices speaking in hidden languages whispered and screamed in his ears.
"AURON!" the voice of his father came once more. "HELP ME!" His image, entangled in tendrils of black, burned into Auron's mind as he descended further into an unknowable distortion. He tried to cry back to the apparition, "Where?" but his throat was charcoal, and his tongue ash.

Then a flash. A single image; a map of the Mid Rim, and a bright glow. Auron knew where the glow was, but as his mind struggled to bring about lucidity, he was unable to think more on it. Then another scream came, as the undefined image of a black fortress came to his mind. It was a new voice, plagued by unknowable torment and wrath. The very sound of it struck fear deep into Auron's heart, and he was rendered paralysed, broken. It spoke one word.
"GEVURAH."

Auron rose from his bed, the sheets wet from his sweat. He panted heavily, but around him all was still.

All was silent.
