NEW ALDERA — A GOVERNMENT LOOKS INWARD

The Imperial Corrections Directorate has launched a formal investigation into the legality and circumstances surrounding Emergency Measure EX-42A, enacted by Exarch Karl von Strauss to depose Empress Liraeth Deschart.
The Directorate emphasizes that von Strauss has not been apprehended and that, under Confederation law, it possesses no authority to arrest or detain members of the Imperial Ruling Council.
What has followed is a rare moment of scrutiny within the Imperial Confederation: a civilian oversight body publicly examining whether the removal of a reigning Empress was carried out within legal bounds.

KEY DEVELOPMENTS — SEALED SESSIONS AND LEGAL QUESTIONS

According to the Directorate, the Warden Primus was informed of Strauss’s intent prior to the special session on New Aldera, where EX-42A was enacted behind sealed doors. The Exarch had full legal authority to close that session, as well as any branch of COMECI, including the Directorate itself.

The ICD confirms that it does not know the Empress’s current location but was informed she is alive and in Strauss’s custody. No additional branch has independently verified Strauss’s claims of “state instability.” The Directorate states plainly that their investigation is ongoing and that no determination has been made regarding criminality or legality.

Only one individual on the Directorate’s published list of “persons of interest,” Captain Ronhar Tane of the Mahporeem Imperial Remnant, has voluntarily approached the ICD. No one has requested counsel, attempted negotiation, or resisted questioning. The military, according to the Warden Primus, remains cooperative. Had they wished to obstruct the inquiry, they possess the legal authority to shut down the ICD entirely—yet have not done so.

The special session transcript will not be released.

WHO STANDS TO GAIN — AND WHO LOSES

At present, the only certainty is uncertainty. Strauss retains full authority as Exarch until the Imperial Ruling Council evaluates the ICD’s findings. The Directorate asserts its mandate as a safeguard, demonstrating to the populace that oversight mechanisms remain active.

Yet fractures are visible. The Mahporeem Imperial Remnant has indicated it may withdraw from the Confederation if Captain Tane is detained for longer than a standard week. Concern grows among citizens over the absence of proof-of-life for the Empress, and the ICD acknowledges that this investigation could strain the fragile alliances binding the remnants together.

The Confederation, by the Directorate’s own admission, is not prepared for internal conflict.

RESPONSES FROM ACROSS THE GALAXY — SILENCE AND CONTROLLED STATEMENTS

The Imperial Confederation’s leadership has offered minimal public commentary beyond Strauss’s initial statement. The ICD has refused to speculate, reiterating that secrecy is necessary for security, not indicative of corruption.

Civilian unrest remains limited, though growing. Without verifiable information about the Empress, citizens have turned to rumor—some fearing an internal power grab, others trusting the Confederation’s history of restoring order following crises such as Brosi and Atrisia.

No foreign governments have issued formal responses. The absence of external commentary has deepened the sense of isolation surrounding the inquiry.

WHAT COMES NEXT — SAFEGUARDS IN MOTION

The Directorate states that its investigation is the safeguard, not a prelude to one. Once the inquiry is complete, the findings will be delivered to the Imperial Ruling Council, which alone holds the authority to determine whether Strauss acted within or outside the law.

The ICD cannot retract its investigation, nor can it allege crimes or detain suspects, even if wrongdoing is uncovered. It can only present its findings, after which the Council will determine accountability.

When the Empress’s fate will be made public, and by whom, remains unanswered.

OVERSIGHT, AUTHORITY, AND THE NARROW SPACE BETWEEN

The Strauss Inquiry exposes a profound tension at the core of the Imperial Confederation: a government built on strong authority now forced to question its own exercise of power.

The Directorate insists their duty is to ensure no corruption occupies the highest levels of governance. Strauss maintains that EX-42A was a lawful, necessary measure. The Empress remains unheard.

Between these positions lies a void filled with speculation, silence, and the uneasy knowledge that the Confederation’s stability depends on the outcome of an investigation that has only just begun.
