JOIOL

Continued from A Foolproof Plan

[ Miss Persephone, I have news. ]

Sitting at her desk in her room on Joiol, Persephone was typing away at her datapad, back to the droid. The massive window in front of her desk overlooked the ocean and the wide swath of cove the mansion was situated on. She wasn’t a fan of swimming or nature all too much but the view was excellent, and for that she was appreciative.

“Yes Zee?”

[ The Guild has sent word the bounty has been fulfilled and they are seeking payment. ] The droid gave pause. [ I have validated the claim and have already paid the bounty hunter in question. ]

Turning around to face the droid, eyes went wide. She had placed the bounty some months ago. Considering all there was in the ‘verse to capture and kill, Persephone had immediately known it was going to take time to get it picked up. This was quicker than expected.

[ Would you like to see the holo Miss Persephone? ]

“Of course. I want to confirm with my own eyes.

Zee began the holo, her sharp eyes watching as a bounty hunter pulled her useless pirate father into the frame. Zeke was limping, maybe something was fractured or broken. Bloodied and bruised, it appeared the hunter did his job. Not just any hunter…

“Darryl? Darryl?! Of course it would be Darryl. At least I know the job got done… Play it again for me Zee.”

Persephone watched once again, her mood brightening. The bastard finally got at least a taste of what he deserved. Frankly he needed to be exiled to a prison colony and never seen or heard from again but that was beyond her control. This was in her control. This was something she could easily repeat.

[ Also Miss Persephone I am supposed to remind you dinner is ready. ]

“Right…dinner. Thank you Zee. Uh, save that file for me, will you? Place it in your internal archives. Also, do me a favor and see if we can’t find out more about Darryl.”

[ As you wish, Miss Persephone. Any information in particular? ]

“Not at the moment, a cursory search will be just fine, thank you.”

It was a little suspicious of all the bounty hunters in the universe it would be old Darryl. Persephone wondered if he knew the connection between herself and this target. Not that she thought it mattered, Darryl didn’t seem to enjoy her presence so it wasn’t as if he was doing it for her. He was doing it for the credits. Yet it was all a little curious. Something to keep floating in the back of her mind.

[ Dinner, Miss Persephone. ]

“Oh right…”

Standing, she left for downstairs, practically skipping and taking the stairs two at a time. All but floating as she crossed the polished hardwood floors, a grin on her face. Persephone was confident she was going to be on cloud nine for weeks over this small perceived piece of justice being executed.

Entering the dining room with a huge grin on her face, Phoebe caught sight of her first. The two sat across from one another and dining with a small child was an interesting adventure. Facing down the prospect of moving away to university soon, Persephone wouldn’t admit it but she would miss her ‘little sister’.

“ERISE!” The young girl’s keen eyes tracked Persephone as she moved to sit. “Why is Ersie happy?”

“Probably got a shipment of new fashion delivered to town.”

Persephone paused. Of course they would question her mood. She wasn’t one of those frequently sullen teenagers but it was clear she was jubilant. Ecstatic. Over the moon. Of course she would forget to come up with something. Good thing she was a quick thinker.

“No, although I do have a shipment on the way.” She paused, settling into her seat. “I finally heard back from the University of Agamar. One of the Professors is interested in meeting me. Its early of course, and I shouldn’t be too excited.”

Persephone looked between her adoptive parents, seeing if they suspected her more nefarious dealings with bounty hunters.

“Excellent. I had no doubt they would be interested. Let us know if you want one of us to go with you.”

A typical teenager, Persephone rolled her eyes a little. As if she wasn’t running around the galaxy to dig sites now. Yet it was still nice for the offer.

“Only if one of you aren’t busy. I don’t to bother anyone…”

Talk delved into her transition to university and her shoulders slumped slightly, relieved. Neither suspected a thing. The credits had come from the sale of a holocron with Darryl, so it wasn’t as if they would be looking into the financial accounts where her allowance went. Picking up a fork, a smug smile formed on her face.

Watch your back Zeke, that was only the beginning.
