Work In Progress Icarus Array PD

Corvus Spire

Novean Technologies CEO
OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: Design a Point Defence System for future Vehicle and Starship submissions
  • Canon Link: Point of Reference
  • Permissions: Corvus Spire, Novean Technologies, and CIS
  • Primary Source: N/A
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
  • Manufacturer: Novean Technologies
  • Affiliation: Novean Technologies
  • Market Status: Open Market
  • Model: Icarus
  • Modularity: Yes, it is a module for Starships
  • Production: Minor
  • Material: Duralloy, Computer Components, Sensor Components, and Turret Components
SPECIAL FEATURES

  • A Kinetic based weapon platform equipped with quad 32mm rotary cannons and eight auto-loading missile pods. Primarily designed to counter fighters, lightly armed gunboats, missiles, and torpedos.
  • Icarus Array - If a Ship or Vehicle is equipped with two or more Icarus Arrays their software can create a sensor net and communicate with one another, this allows the automated defences to independently target or consolidate their processing power to rapidly identify, priorities, and respond to threats. Commanders and Gunnery Staff can override these systems if necessary.
  • Automated - Icarus platforms are automated Point Defence weapons, they do not require gunners.
  • Specialist Ammunition - Icarus platforms can be equipped with HEAD (High Explosive Anti-Deflector) Munitions, these munitions carry an ionic charge which is discharged upon impacting a ships deflector temporarily weakening its shields. Under normal circumstances, this wouldn't be an issue for Starfighters or shielded munitions but the high fire rate means a ships deflector is usually hit by several hundred rounds allowing it to gradually overwhelm or pierce the shields of a fighter or bomber.

STRENGTHS
  • Automated Platform - The weapon system does not require a gunner.
  • Kinetic Weaponry - The weapon system has a low power overhead, which means it can be easily be equipped to starships with high power demands.
  • Overwhelming Firepower - The Icarus fires in short bursts of up to 1,200 rounds at speeds of 3,800ft/s this can be devastating for lightly protected fighter craft especially if they are reliant upon ray shielding for protection.
  • Sensor Net - Can independently identify, track, and prioritise targets providing one platform has a Line of Sight to a particular threat.
  • Rocket Pods - Can be supplemented with tracking or dumb fire missiles.
WEAKNESSES
  • Vulnerable to Stealth Systems - The Icarus PD is reliant upon its sensors to ID and respond to threats, stealth weapon systems and countermeasures can hinder many of its systems forcing manual overrides.
  • Vulnerable to Cyberwarfare - Should a ships sensor arrays become damaged or hindered by Cyberwarfare the Icarus turrets will also be impacted and require a manual override until the functionality is restored.
  • Overheat - The weapon system is designed to fire in short but devastating bursts, it can be overwhelmed. Additionally, if forced to fire consistently by its commander's heatsinks can fail and cause the weapon to jam forcing maintenance.
  • Limited Munitions - Generally speaking the Icarus has hundreds of thousands of round capacity, belt feeders can extend this significantly but without ammunition it is rendered useless.

DESCRIPTION
(Describe some of the histories behind the submission. Give us some idea of how it might perform its function, what it excels against and what some limitations of it are. This is where you talk about your idea, flesh it out over at least a good-sized paragraph, and address some of the ways it might be used or abused. For especially powerful or ambitious submissions, a very thorough description is recommended.)
