Your Favourite Song of All Time, Ever

A friend put this question to me the other day, as many have over the years. For me, listening to SO much music, it's a killer question, and I'm sure it is for a lot of people, but I was finally able make a choice (it actually came quicker to me than I expected but it still something of a chore).

So it got me thinking about other people's favourites! So I want to know your favourite song/track/piece of all time. Out of everything. Ever. EEEEEEEVER.

If you HAD to choose one song to be the only song you were able to listen to for the rest of your life, what would you choose?

For me, personally, it is this.

Ohhh, good question. I have a lot of favorite songs, but I think the one that I will listen to every single time in any form, version or iteration is Hotel California. I am particularly fond of the extended version with the long guitar solo. :D

For me I get asked "what song is your favorite to play" more than which is my favorite. Both however are the same song. When I was young back when there was no internet lol, I was an aspiring professional saxophone player. But before that I was an even younger novice saxophone player. I was always odd when it came to my music choices. lil 10 year old me listening to big band music when the whole 80's music thing hit. By the time I was 14 I had begun my voyage into professional music and played in community bands and at local talent competitions. Lost the big State level comp to an 8 year old mutant kid who cold play like jerry lee lewis. kid was awesome. anyway. As I was coming up along the way I learned to improv and it was Summertime which I learned it to. The song will always be the tune that opened up real music to me.

I may be pretty basic about the music I usually listen to, and I do believe my all-time favourite music is just as basic.

Now, why didn't I pick a song from my childhood? First of all, I don't remember much of the music from my childhood. And the ones I do remember -- I kind of hate them now. So, why do I love this song so much? This one song helped me of out of quite a difficult time in my life, I would say. And ever since, it gives me such a good feeling and brings up very nice memories when I hear it.
I am a naturally happy and optimistic person, so that would be a perfect signature/theme song for me, I feel like.
EDIT: And it's one of the two songs I think I have not actually started to hate after listening to countless times. That is a very good sign, because I usually get bored of music very quickly.

It's gonna sound really really cheesy but if I had only ONE song I could listen to for the rest of my life it would be Ed Sheran's "Thinking Out Loud."

Why? It's my girlfriend and mine's special song. It's the one I used to woo and serinade her. It's the one that played when I realized she was the one who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with (and one day marry). And its the song that defines our relationship the most.

I don't get sentimental often on this board--or at all for that matter--but this song is one of those special things for me.

This song, this version. Ray Brown entering on bass at the 2:48 mark is as perfect a moment in music as has ever been recorded.

Really, this whole album. But this track in particular stands out to me as the one that I never get tired of, can go years without listening to and still know all the words, and introduced me to one of my favorite artists and albums of all time.

This will always be my favorite song. It was on the first cassette tape that my mom bought me for my sixth birthday and I used to listen to this album, and only this album, on every trip I took when I was a kid until the infamous CD player (a sony walkman) took over. This song, particularly, because I can always relate to it.

Do I have to pick just one? I mean to put it simply this is nearly impossible. I have many favorite pieces.

My two favorite composers are Chopin and Debussy. Beethoven is amazing too. I really love Philip Glass and Joe Hisaishi as modern composers.

My favorite Chopin pieces are his Winter wind etude- Nocturne in C sharp minor and E flat major. I also really adore his Ballade in G minor. I almost put that as my favorite but then I thought of other pieces and I felt like I was betraying them. Regardless, most all of Chopin is fantastic. Seriously I know he's from the romantic era but everyone should at least listen to his ten most popular pieces.
Debussy is really great, I know they call Chopin the poet of the piano but personally I think Debussy is more poetic. I like his arabesque no.1 and Claire de lune. His lesser known works are impressive to, like Pour le piano.

Glass isn't the kind of composer I listen to over and over, but his pieces are nice. Even mathematical at times. I really like a lot of it though. His style is just different I think that's why I like him so much to be honest.
Hisaishi writes for Studio Ghibli and his spirted away music and howls moving castle are just so amazing. I especially love his playing. He is a wonderful pianist.

I know this was not one song. Please forgive me but I could not do it...
With all that said though. I will make an attempt.
I mentioned it earlier- but Chopin's Ballade no. 1 in G minor is just incredible. I think the reason I'd call it my favorite is because I can't just listen to it. With everything else I mentioned I could put it on and write or whatever I would do, but with this Ballade I have to pay attention. It's just that kind of piece that demands my attention for all the acts and different tones. It's beautiful and- just that kind of piece I guess.

Oh I should also mention I like the doors. Jim Morrison was an interesting man. His poetic style was just really clever and my dad always liked to play the same three songs for me when I rode in the car with him, he told me "This is the pinnacle of music, just listen to the style. It just makes you think about life." Before he sang along and I remember it made me happy. So I wanted to list them just because I think those moments inspired me to become a concert pianist.
These were the songs: La woman. Riders on the storm. The end.

If I have to pick one... I'll choose "Ode to Joy". I love Beethoven and this song is the one that made me want to play an instrument. After him, I would choose Vivaldi, Bach, and John Williams.
